Sygg, River Cutthroat - Rogue/Merfolk Tribal

Commander / EDH Merfolk Rogues UB (Dimir) Unblockable

Caliberex

I wanted to have a Merfolk deck. I also wanted to have a Rogue deck. I was stuck on which commander to use until I realized, to my great delight, that Sygg is both a Merfolk and a Rogue! This, then, became the dual-tribal deck for merfolk rogues. This deck is all about theme! With that, including Sygg, there are eight Merfolk Rogues, twelve additional Merfolk, and eight additional Rogues. That makes for a total of 30 Merfolks and/or Rogues. I also have Thassa, God of the Sea who isn't technically classified as a Merfolk, but... c'mon! In addition to creature theme, in line with the character types of what Merfolk and Rogues do, there's a lot of stealing other people's stuff and a lot of attack evasion like unblockability and islandwalk. All my non-creature spells were chosen on the Merfolk and/or Rogues theme. My favorite of which being Tangle Kelp.

The trick with this deck is to work on making sure an opponent is dealt a minimum of three damage on any and all turns. Thus, with Sygg on the board for an easy 2 CMC, you get to draw a card. Who doesn't like more cards in their hand?

Swapped out Dimir Infiltrator with Svyelun of Sea and Sky 7/7/22. Swapped out Hollowsage with Seafloor Stalker 7/14/22. Swapped out Phantasmal Mount with Wanderbrine Rootcutters 11/6/22. Swapped out Jwar Isle Refuge with Darkwater Catacombs

This deck has been played and is very enjoyable. Being a strong contender on the table when the goal was to be fully thematic has real satisfaction to it. Folks typically underestimate the deck and I'm often first or second in a 4-player Commander game with this deck. Definitely one of my favorites personally owned. I'm running much fewer land cards even though I've got a couple costly leviathans. This is because the Commander is so cheap and because there's plenty of card draw. I've not had land production issues playing this deck.

Notes: Blackbloom Rogue   and Umara Wizard   are both considered land slots for this deck's calculation but are available as an additional Rogue or Merfolk respectively. How fitting, isn't it?
