Planeswalker (1)

Creature (1)

Mono Green Devotion + GW Aggro

ABOUT THE DECK:

About the deck

This deck started out as a hybrid of Stompy and Nykthos Mono-Green Devotion. The idea was to quickly cast Stompy's efficient and/or resilient creatures that would beat down and contribute Devotion so that the ramp core could drop huge bombs and win. The deck splashed red for great cards like Domri Rade, Kessig Wolf Run, and Xenagos, God of Revels. Since then, however, there have been many changes that have changed the structure, but the strategy remains largely the same.

This is a hybrid between Selesnya Aggro and Mono-Green Devotion. The deck plays resilient and efficient creatures that put pressure on the opponent while adding up to green devotion. The ramp core will land bombs and wincons that will make it very hard for the opponent to win.

MANA FIXING & RAMP:

Mana Ramp

Arbor Elf, Utopia Sprawl, Garruk Wildspeaker, & Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx make up the classic Nykthos Devotion ramp core.

-Arbor Elf is used instead of other mana dorks because of its ability to untap enchanted Forests with Utopia Sprawls. This leads to silly amounts of mana. Arbor Elf + Utopia Sprawl is not something the opponent wants to see in your hand, and definitely not on the battlefield.

-Garruk Wildspeaker is the king of ramp. He can untap Sprawl'd Forests, and any utility land, which is obviously huge.

- Abundant Growth is not only a great cantrip that replaces itself in devotion, but it also fixes mana, and allows non-basics like Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and Gavony Township to help cast color-specific creatures.

-Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is the engine of the devotion ramp deck. The cards in this deck have incredible value in their devotion contributions.

-Utopia Sprawl can be regarded as a pseudo mana dork that isn't as easy to remove as the usual one-drop creatures. In this deck, Sprawl is usually cast as green, but in situations where it is the only way to fix mana, it can be called as white.

RESILIENCY & EFFICIENCY:

Resilient

The problem with most green devotion decks in Modern is that they can lose gas and falter against spot removal and board wipes. This is why many of the Selesnya creatures fit so well in this deck.

-Voice of Resurgence needs to be killed twice. This little guy needs no introduction, but for those who aren't as familiar, a resolved Voice of Resurgence is what Control decks cringe at. He pressures the opponent to cast spells on his or her own turn, and even if he is killed, the GW token that replaces him is no joke.

- Leatherback Baloth is a great answer to many of the 4/5 bodies--Siege Rhino, Tasigur, the Golden Fang--that are gaining popularity in Modern. A 4/5 on turn 3 is very hard to deal with in Modern. But in this deck, he can come out as early as turn 2.

-Genesis Hydra is efficient and resilient. He is a 2-for-1 that guarantees a permanent should you dig it up. That is to say, counterspells will not stop him from bringing out a permanent should he hit one. Keep in mind that a hydra for 3 will bring out the aforementioned Leatherback Baloth , which means you're getting a 4/5 and a 3/3 for 5 mana. He is a great place to pour all the mana this deck can ramp.

-Eternal Witness is another Modern staple. She is such an amazing and versatile card, and in this deck, she can be very, very annoying for the opponent. When he or she has just finished killing off a Voice of Resurgence, Leatherback Baloth , or a planeswalker, it is demoralizing to see Eternal Witness putting that very card right back into your hand. She is a great target for Primal Command as she can simply pluck it out of the graveyard.

-Knight of the Reliquary's board presence isn't as immediate as the other creatures in the deck. However, if she remains on the board, her ability to pump herself up while tutoring for any land in the deck is nothing to laugh at.

-Garruk Wildspeaker is not a creature, but he is very efficient. All three of his abilities are very, very beneficial to this deck.

-Ajani, Mentor of Heroes is just straight-up card advantage, which is always a plus. His first ability is scary for the opponent as well. It's almost a given that the opponent will do whatever he or she can to try and get him off the field asap.

-Nylea, God of the Hunt is resilient and efficient. Her mana sink ability is underrated, and her huge body and indestructibility is very annoying for opponents. But her real value comes with with the fact that when she resolves, she immediate puts intense pressure on the opponent because of her trample-enabling ability.

-Wilt-Leaf Liege is obviously resilient against Lightning Bolt and discard. She also has a huge board presence from the moment she resolves.

CONTROL & REMOVAL:

Removal

- Vines of Vastwood can be a wincon, protection, and a counterspell. The opponent usually never sees this one coming since the deck looks so similar to Wilted Abzan. This card will straight-up stop Splinter Twin and a lot of what Infect does.

-Path to Exile really needs no introduction as a removal spell. It deals with huge bodies and more importantly Wurmcoil Engine, which is a big threat to the deck.

-Qasali Pridemage is Seal of Primordium on a stick. Exalted never hurts, either.

DECK SYNERGIES:

Synergies

Arbor Elf + Utopia Sprawl for early game mana ramp.

Wilted-Leaf Liege + any creature in the deck obviously provides larger bodies, especially when those other creatures are GW.

Primal Command + Eternal Witness for annoying the crap out of the opponent for a few turns.

WIN CONDITIONS:

Win Cons

-Dragonlord Dromoka can be hardcast by turn 3. She is not the kind of wincon that will end the game the moment she resolves. However, unlike many other wincons, she will always resolve. On top of that, she keeps the opponent honest, letting you do whatever you need to do on your turn with no worries, and she provides reach. A 5/7 body with lifelink is pretty good as well.

-Nylea, God of the Hunt will most likely win the game by giving trample to everything else on the field.

-Garruk Wildspeaker's overrun ability can be used on the second turn of his casting. Similar to Nylea, God of the Hunt.

SIDEBOARD:

SB

-Thrun, the Last Troll will always resolve, and he is very, very difficult to remove. He is great against decks with lots of counter spells or spot removal. Pump him up with Nylea, God of the Hunt or Vines of Vastwood , and your opponents may begin to tear their hair out.

- Creeping Corrosion is the classic Affinity hate card.

-Wurmcoil Engine is an alternate wincon that can be sided in against other aggro decks. He is another efficient/resilient creature that the deck loves.

-Silklash Spider can deal with Lingering Souls, flipped Delver of Secrets  , and other pesky flyers.

-Scavenging Ooze is excellent GY hate, lifegain, and a great answer to Goyf.

-Torpor Orb is for Splinter Twin, and other decks that abuse ETB triggers.

-Spellskite is pretty much great all around.

-Krosan Grip never fails at what it is intended to do. Great for matches when Qasali Pridemate needs some help.

-Pithing Needle is here to stop planeswalkers and other annoying cards with activated abilities. Liliana of the Veil, I'm looking at you.

-Choke. The control hate is strong in this deck.
