I loved the combos in Evolving Strength and WTF Shananigans (so many combos), and I saw a way to combine the two with some synergetic older cards in Modern to produce this deck.

The key to this deck is synergy, combos, ramping and +1/+1 counters. Almost everything in this deck helps multiple other cards, which is the way a good combo deck should be. The key interactions here are between the Evolve and Graft mechanics, with tons of exponential counter growth and lots of protection for our creatures.

Key Combos

  • Cytoplast Root-Kin + Plaxcaster Frogling + Renegade Krasis - These are +1/+1 counter generation core of the deck. There is a lot of interaction between the three of these when they enter the battlefield (ETB). For example, if you have a 3/2 RK in play and cast PF, the PF will trigger Evolve for the RK (making it a 4/3) and will put a counter on the PF, making it a 4/4. Let's say you then cast a CRK, and graft one counter from the PF to the CRK, reducing it to a 3/3. So the CRK ETB with 5 counters, which trigger's the RK's Evolve, making it a 5/4. The RK then gives the PF & CRK one counter each. Then you can resolve the CRK's ETB ability to give the RK & PF one counter each, so now you have a 6/5 RK, a 4/4 PF, and a 6/6 CRK. Not bad eh?

  • Bow of Nylea and Gavony Township also give +1/+1 counters to your creatures.

  • Corpsejack Menace + Kalonian Hydra + Vorel of the Hull Clade + Solidarity of Heroes - Exponential counter growth engines. KH and CM are the best here, CM being a cheaper Doubling Season as well as a creature, and one of the best reasons to splash black, while KH is a clock the opponent cannot ignore. Vorel and SoH are good for blowout wins due to their instant effects. Don't forget, these abilities stack, so if you cast SoH while CM is in play, you get 4x counters, and if you cast another SoH at the same time, you get 8x counters. I've won a game once with a 32/33 Birds of Paradise, and another time with a 104/104 Kavu Predator; all hail math!

  • Kruphix, God of Horizons + Prophet of Kruphix will generate a ton of mana to use for a game-ending Genesis Wave or Cyclonic Rift
