Courier Hawk

Creature — Bird

Flying, vigilance

RazortoothMtg,

Those are some great suggestions. As to why Courier Hawk, it was a budget friendly way to work in flying and vigilance. Another plus side to it was the mana cost. I can get it out turn two normally and then turn 3 + 4 I can focus on getting my more vital enchants on the board. With a 3 mana creature I worry my timing would get thrown off. Even in ideal conditions Serra Avenger is still played on the third turn. I will admit that originally I had used Nimbus Wings but removed it because I didn't feel I had enough creatures. I've tweaked the deck some since then and added Kor Spiritdancer which would combo much better with Nimbus Wings so I may go back to that.

Another issue is deck size. I prefer to keep it at 60 and there were definitely some tough calls on cards I wanted but had to pass on. Thanks for chiming in on the deck though. I haven't played in probably three years so lots of new cards I haven't seen yet which makes feedback a wonderful thing.

Courier Hawk? What is this Storm Crow imposter!

Seriously though, it would probably be better in this deck as a Serra Avenger. If you don't like the idea of casting that t4 and can't afford Aether Vials, then maybe play Aerial Responder or Aven Sunstriker. Adorned Pouncer might find a place in the deck as a way to give the team double strike. Voice of All is good too as it gives everything flying and is another way to get protection from a chosen color.

Idyllic Tutor is a little pricy but does add consistency. Unfortunately there aren't really any budget alternatives.

Concerted Effort is probably better than Odric, Lunarch Marshal. (not legendary, starts at Upkeep instead of Combat Step) If you decide to work on this deck more, I'd suggest 4x Concerted effort, 1-2x Odric.

Creatures to cut because they don't jive with Effort or Odric: Lost Leonin, Priests of Norn, Blighted Agent. Since Infect doesn't work with the Effort or Odric, I'd also swap out Tezzeret's Gambit for Divination.

If you want Hexproof, I think Slippery Bogle is going to be just as good as Invisible Stalker for 1 less CMC since neither the Effort nor the Odric can grant unblockable. And, with First Strike/double strike/flying, you don't really need it either. All that said, since none of these abilities are truly static, I think hexproof is probably just not really worth it at all.

Aerial Responder and Fencing Ace strike me as pretty good here. I'd probably go at least 3x for each. I also think Knight of the White Orchid would be really good (mana ramp+First Strike) and Courier Hawk would be good here. All together, I'd want at least 20 creatures for this build, maybe as many as 24.

I think Faith's Shield or Gods Willing will also be pretty good here. I like the Shield because it will work on Concerted Effort but can also be cast on a creature to give all your creatures protection. On the other hand, Gods Willing will also work on your all your creatures and give you a Scry. I'd drop some Ice Over or Spell Pierce for it.

You might seriously consider swapping Black for Blue. Typhoid Rats sharing deathtouch sounds pretty nasty to me. You'll also get access to black evasion: Fear, Skulk, Menace, etc.

I'd drop Aether Vial because it's stupidly expensive.

Add Glacial Fortress if you're sticking with white/blue.

Sideboard ideas: Revoke Existence or Disenchant or Hurkyl's Recall. Also probably 1xElixir of Immortality, Pithing Needle, Sanctimony or Witchbane Orb, Holy Day.

Angelic Overseer, Aerial Responder and Courier Hawk all play nicely with Odric. You might also want to run Concerted Effort in case you can't keep him in play.

Steelshaper's Gift and Stoneforge Mystic will help with the equipment subtheme, if you wanted to push it a bit.

Yes, Storm Crow is nice, but Courier Hawk has even vigilance "

Hmm, so get rid of : 1x Angelic Overseer (cuz it doesn't help the Effort) 2x Courier Hawk (use Serra Avenger or something better),

Hey!I'm making myself a deck from Odric too and I also had the draw problem, so I came up with a couple cards to help me with that:

  • Mind Stone and/or Command Tower help with a little ramping but also serve as card draw in case you need, the same go for the cycle lands

  • In my case I use quite some equips, so Stone Haven Outfitter was a nice addition

  • Serum Tank Can give you one draw per turn almost every time, at one mana lower than Candles

  • Slate of Ancestry can do wonders when you have only one or no cards in hand and 3 or 4 creatures on the field, which is not hard with this deck

  • Bygone Bishop is almost a secon Mentor of the Meek, because a LOT of creature spells you cast are CMC 3 or lower

  • And there is always the most common draws, which I don't like much but can be helpful such as Staff of Nin, Skullclamp and Tamiyo's Journal

Also, consider swapping Courier Hawk for Hovermyr it has the exact same functionality in the deck except it doesn't need specific color mana, so you can use a mana rock to drop it.

Maybe Aligned Hedron Network as you only have 6 creatures with power 5 or greater.
