2nd Place Monday Standard, 3-1
TheGamer, 11 years ago
I went to a standard on Monday and went 3-1. Here's the match summary.
Round 1, MBD, 2-1. Game 1 I beat him with soldier tokens galore. I Detention Sphered two sets of Pack Rats and had big butt blockers for days. Game 2 he destroyed me. When my lifegain was at its highest, he played Erebos, God of the Dead so those huge Sphinx's Revelations did nothing. Game 3 he may of played my archnemesis Erebos, but I had the d-sphere to deal with it. I also playedSupreme Verdict the same turn. Next turn I played Ajani, Mentor of Heroes fetching Elspeth, Sun's Champion and proceeded to win.
Round 2, MBD splash green, 2-0. This was going to be a harder match to win since it ran 4 Lifebane Zombies mainboard (its my deck). But luckily, both games I had the removal to deal with it and the Elspeth, Sun's Champions to win.
Round 3, Mono Red Blitz, 2-0. Somehow, I destroyed him. This is my worst match-up, yet I won. Game 1 I was beaten down to 1 life exactly (thank you Courser of Kruphix triggers) and then I stabilized. Lucky for me, he runs no "hit you in the face" spells, so I proceeded to pump up Elspeth, Sun's Champion. Game 2 he was flooded like no one could ever be flooded before. He runs 17 lands and when I won he had 10 on the board.
Round 4, MUD, 0-2. It sucked losing this since it is super easy to win. Game 1 he had out lots of creatures and hosed me with that. Game 2 even though he sided out 2 Master of Waves, I was staring at 2 Master of Waves
and 9 elementals. After seeing no board wipes or d-spheres, I scooped wondering why my deck would do this to me. 10 cards in, I saw a board wipe.
So, 3-1 at the end of the night. I got 4 Gatecrash packs for the heck of it opening a Godless Shrine and foil Zameck Guildmage as my good cards.
Thanks again guys for all your support and happy deckbuilding!

Quick land fix.

I swapped in and out a few cards, cut the two Hidden Strings and added a couple of more lands. I also subbed some basic lands for two Dimir Aqueduct, because, bounce and it comes out tapped, too.

Got rid of some expensive cards; Smog Elemental for example, and some unnecessary cards like Leonin Iconoclast and got some new cards that fit the theme better, while protecting my important creatures. Smallpox and Silent Arbiter

So this version definitely performed way better than my previous build (which had 3 Divination and no Dreadbore, among other things). Still though, I ended up 2-2-1 :/
ROUND 1 vs. UB Mill (1-1-Draw)
As you might guess, I was not prepared to face a mill deck. Yes, it's FNM and there are always wacky things going on, but I haven't seen anyone play a Mill deck in a very long time. Regardless, here we go.
GAME 1: Got hit with lots of nasty surprises like Breaking / Entering and Jace, Memory Adept. She milled over my Elixir of Immortality as well as my AEtherling and a Prognostic Sphinx. However, I was able to slam a Keranos, God of Storms and win with a big Rakdos's Return.
GAME 2: I was able to Slaughter Games her Jaces, but once again she milled over my Elixir and many other important things. This game went super long and I ended up getting decked.
GAME 3: Once again, my Elixir got milled. Seriously? Again this game went long and we eventually went to turns. I had turns 1, 3 and 5 and I was sure I could get her. I had a Jace, Architect of Thought and a Prognostic Sphinx on the field and her life total was pretty low. On turn 5, all I needed to do was swing for 3 with Sphinx and then manage to find a Rakdos's Return to hit her for a final 5 damage. I made a REALLY bad play error though and ticked down my Jace before swinging with the Sphinx. I did not draw the Return, and then of course I saw it with the scry trigger. I had another Jace in hand, but not enough mana to cast both that and the Return (1 mana short). We ended up in a draw.
ROUND 2 vs. Naya Midrange (2-0)
GAME 1: He mulled to 6 on the play. I was able to Anger away his mana guys and at that point he couldn't play any threats. I just slammed a Keranos and won.
Game 2: He mulled down to 5 and ended up severely mana screwed so I was able to just play everything and kill anything he played. Again Keranos took the win.
ROUND 3 vs. GW Heroic (2-1)
GAME 1: My opening hand seemed good - had 3 scry lands (2 UB and 1 UR) along with an Anger of the Gods and a couple kill spells. She kept playing small dudes and I kept finding blue and black mana so I couldn't play my Anger. After a long time, she ultimated her Ajani and got 25 cats. Finally, I found a Steam Vents and played my Anger, killing all her guys just in the nick of time. That felt good. However at that point I was so behind that she was able to kill me in a couple of turns anyway.
GAME 2: This game went much better. Had no mana troubles and kept finding plenty of kill spells for all of her guys. Eventually I slammed a Keranos and a Sphinx and easily won from there.
GAME 3: Same deal as Game 2. This game she ended up flooding out and I was able to play another Keranos alongside Sphinx AND AEtherling.
ROUND 4 vs. Junk Midrange (0-2)
GAME 1: Started out okay - I was killing all of his stuff and I was able to play a Keranos, but I kept wiffing with it and just couldn't keep up with all the damage he was doing. I was down to 2 life and it looked like I might be able to get back in it, but then he was able to resolve an Obsedat and that was that.
GAME 2: Basically same deal, but I sideboarded incorrectly. I only brought in my 2 Mizzium Mortars and extra Anger of the Gods when I should have also sided in all 4 Duress. He just didn't run out of threats and I was drawing into lands.
ROUND 5 vs. Junk Midrange (0-2)
This round was particularly upsetting because I think I played tight, but I was playing against a judge (who is obviously very good) and his deck was just nonstop steam and I couldn't even win a game.
GAME 1: I was able to Thoughtseize 2 of his Courser of Kruphix, Anger a bunch of his guys, kill his Blood Baron of Viskopa with a Mortars. My life total was getting low but I found a Prognostic Sphinx and a Keranos. He had an Elspeth, some tokens, and another Blood Baron on the field and I was around 5 life. I was able to end of turn overload Cyclonic Rift, then main phase a Rakdos's Return for 5. I thought for sure I could pull the win out there, but he found an Archangel of Thune and replayed his Blood Baron.
GAME 2: Boarded in all 4 Duress, 2 Mizzium Mortars, an extra Anger of the Gods and 2 Slaughter Games. I was able to Thoughtseize and Duress away a Blood Baron, an Ajani and an Elspeth. He had a second Blood Baron in hand, but I was holding 2 Mizzium Mortars. He Sin Collectored one of them away, played another Elspeth and made some tokens. I could have overloaded Mortars to clear the board but I knew he had that Blood Baron so I decided to hold it. He topdecked another Sin Collector and got it (I had no counters in hand).
All in all, the deck definitely is performing better but could still use a bit of tweaking. I'm thinking about maybe going up to 2 Mizzium Mortars main and 2 in the SB to make the full playset as that was kind of an all-star card.
Also I'm thinking maybe I could stick a few Quicken in the deck just to have some end of turn draw spells to gain some card advantage. Jace is fantastic as usual, but sometimes it is just too slow when I need to draw an early answer. Thoughts?

Ok, got it down to 60 cards. I took out the pontiffs, as most of my creature base has extort anyway. Trimmed some Lands, and took out the altars, they just feel uneeded.

Long story short: Trying to make the deck faster. It's fun, and it's win con is pretty big, buuuut... well, it's not quite fast enough for my taste.
The new Wall of Frost should help with that.

Update #3
Audiofreek, 11 years ago
After more playing the deck against some pretty wicked ones, Trostani, Selesnya's Voice is in the sideboard with an additional Farseek and Mayor of Avabruck Flip in the main deck. The big debate now is weather or not to remove the two Parallel Lives and put in two more Doubling Season. The plus to that is more chances to double the counters, the drawback is the additional one in mana cost could slow my deck down a bit more.
One the brighter side, today I was able to do the double Elspeth combo (without the help of Windbrisk Heights and the added bonus to that include Vraska the Unseen assassins made a strong appearance.
Any thoughts you might have for me are welcomed.

Monday Night Tournament
lllllHAVOKlllll, 11 years ago
First time playing this deck at my local stores Monday night tournament and I went 2-1 and am very happy with how the deck plays. The one loss was due to a sideboarded Blood Baron of Vizkopa and I couldn't answer it at all. Really looking forward to what M15 brings to the table and hopefully a reprinted Doom blade lol.

Just a quick update as to what's foiled in the deck.![Radha, Heir to Keld feature for Radha, Heir to Keld EDH [Duel Commander]](http://static.tappedout.net/mtg-cards-2/dd-might-mind/radha-heir-to-keld/mtg-cards/_user-added/atony1400-en_ngpv77okfz-1-14900462440.png)

Played a 3-rounder at the local store. Won 4 games, lost 4, and the ninth game wasn't played. I made many play errors, such as putting back Sphinx scry in the wrong order, and trying to kill opposing Misctcutters with blue creatures. After the games, I acquired some Kioras and updated the to the list. (I still need Breeding Pools.)
Improvements
shocked439, 11 years ago
I've acquired my fourth Marsh Flats and second Arid Mesa. Learning to deal with using life is scary. Taking 5 to Thoughtseize turn one is tough to swallow.
Modern is a tough format there are so many decks to learn. Playing a deck with lots of hand disruption requires knowing how the other decks work. The lynchpin is not always obvious. The deck works though. I'm still reconfiguring the mana base and considering dropping brimaz to a one of moving the other to the sideboard.
Considering dropping the caves for plains and swamps. With the extra fetches it seems prudent.

Major changes
Chitown_Sorcerer, 11 years ago
So just changed LOTS up. -2x Fanatic of Mogis -1x Felhide Brawler -2x Felhide Spiritbinder -3x Gnarled Scarhide -2x Minotaur Skullcleaver -1x Ragemonger
+1x Boros Reckoner +1x Felhide Petrifier +1x Kragma Warcaller +2x Kragma Butcher
Spells:
Umm lots of stuff.
So basically i put all the removal in the main and the pump/tricks in the side and will have to figure out a nice mix.
And my goofy ones in the maybe board. I might have to main a Whip of Erebos. The lifelink might be needed.
Lands:
Went up to 23 lands.
+2x Mana Confluence
+1x Mountain
-1x Swamp

Streamline

Removed Bladed Bracers and added Ponder. Since Hidden Strings ciphered on Invisible Stalker lets him untap himself, the vigilance seemed not as necessary as what is offered by Ponder in the event of bad draws or a crummy opening hand.
A change of focus

FNM - Top 4
Nigeltastic, 11 years ago
The deck performed well (4-2), and with the power of a few good draws and a whole lot of self milling I made Top 4, where we split the prize.
Most of the matches were versus aggro decks, especially minotaurs, which I played against twice. I have found that the deck hangs with all but the most aggressive, and with a little help from the sideboard (thank you Abrupt Decay and Golgari Charm) the matchup gets better.
My two losses on the night were versus a really fast white enchantment deck which combined with poor draws on my part to make a fast loss and then a close match against a minotaur deck I ended up beating in the top 8. We went to 3 games and I kept a risky one land hand in game 3, which I was swiftly punished for as he went off the fastest he did all night, swinging for 16 on turn 4.
Overall I think I just need to be careful with my mulligans/keeps, the deck only has 20 lands, and so 1 land hands are even more risky.
