I wound up doing as planned and taking out the Royal Assassins for Stonehorn Dignitary, because I can't stop losing to aggro. Any other suggestions for cards that can help shut down aggro decks are appreciated. I also dropped the Isolated Chapels for Swamps, because I never had black mana sources when I needed them. Obviously, this lets me search those out with Evolving Wilds. I'm also considering dropping in a tutor, probably Increasing Ambition, if I can find space for it.

deathkiler67, 13 years ago

The plan main plan is to attach Call to the Kindred onto one of the cards and get out the Dragskol Captains and Dragskol Reavers out as fast as possible and Soul Seizer to take control of any big creatures that are on the battlefiled when you deal damge with Soul Seizer.

FNM - 3-2

CUJ3, 13 years ago

PLayed it at FNM last night going 3-1 in the first four rounds. Game one was a mirror match, but I was able to lock down the board and it lead me to a win. Game two was against mono black infect, after siding in tragic slips and spellskites it was an easy win. Game three was another mirror, that out ran me, after I drew into 7 land in a row. That was a loss. Game four was against delver, which was an easy win. Cut to top 8, first round was another mirror, and due to bad shuffling I lost.

Another couple of Changes just to play test with. Removed Negate (will end up in the sideboard) and Replaced with Distress. Removed the 2 Mental Misstep as I never seemed to get it when needed and a better option would possibly be Gut Shot right about now, however for the moment I've replaced them with land.

I also Removed 1 Cemetery Reaper and 1 Diregraf Ghoul To add In 2 Grimgrin, Corpse-Born for the added late game bomb. I will playtest with this and see how it goes.

Additional Improvements

Solomon, 13 years ago

This section is open to accommodate any minor card changes made after the release of the deck's final revision on February 3rd. I intend to use this mini-section to improve the deck in view of any Magic developments published after the completion of this deck's final revision (for example, the release of later card sets such as Avacyn Restored, existing cards I have not yet heard of, etcetera). Thus concludes this brief description.

Feb. 14 Replaced one Swamp with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth per MisterRoach's wonderful suggestion. Thank you, MisterRoach! Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

Dark Ascension and The Quickening, pt. 2

Drac07, 13 years ago

So I'm still at sea, but I wanted to see what I could cook up with the release of DKA. I want to maintain the theme of the deck as a neverending wave of Zombies. That having been said, I'm not too happy with the proportion of cards I feel best contribute to that end, but I don't want to go much higher than 60 cards (I'm at 62 at the moment). Cards I wish I could have more of: Endless Ranks of the Dead, Moan of the Unhallowed, Ghoulcaller's Chant, and Undying Evil. As much as I want to increase their count, I would have to start cutting away from things like spot removal and these awesome creatures. There will probably be tweaking after playtesting. Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and Havengul Lich would be great, but realistically, it's going to be a long time before I can get my hands on them.

As previously stated, this incarnation of the deck will rely on Heartless Summoning to get my creatures out faster. I put three of them in to increase the chance of drawing them quickly, but I wouldn't really want to have more than one on the field at a time. With the advent of Diregraf Captain, I feel that the ability to pair it up with Cemetery Reaper more than makes up for the -1/-1.

Reduced numbers of Grave Titans and Vengeful Pharaohs. These are great cards, but they're late-game and my major focus here is to speed things up without sacrificing too much power. I also removed Call to the Grave, as awesome as it is with a Zombie deck, because I didn't want to have to lose the Titans. Added a Grimgrin, Corpse-Born because he'll work very well with the Gravecrawlers.

Toward the end of endless waves of Zombies, I've added in Geralf's Messengers and Undying Evil to take advantage of the new mechanic. Mid-game should see things like Moan of the Unhallowed and Endless Ranks of the Undead to keep the Zombies coming.

Win conditions: Diregraf Captains should make my opponent think twice about striking down the Zombies I hope to be generating. Grave Titans bringing in two each as they come out. Vengeful Pharaohs that work from the graveyard and Gravecrawlers, neither of which ever really go away. With mana freed up by Heartless Summoning, I can use Cemetery Reapers' activated ability. As those stack up, I can get out one-drop Unbreathing Hordes as powerhouses that refuse to go down. Not to mention the Titans and Pharaohs are powerful deathtouchers, and everything that's out being buffed by Lords.

In its finished form, with Mikaeus and Havenguls, I envision sacrificing undying, cheaper Grave Titans to Grimgrin multiple times. If the engine is up and running very well, with plenty of Lords and perhaps two Heartless Summoning out, that's only two black mana per Titan per Havengul cast. Two more Zombie tokens per Titan per battlefield entrance and Grimgrin growing like crazy.

Anticipated weaknesses: Counterspells from blue. Direct damage and pure speed from red. Board wipes from any number of sources. I would love to splash in some counterspells of my own, perhaps in place of spot removal currently in place. Zombie Apocalypse would handily take care of a board wipe, so that may find a home in here later. In the meantime, there's Ghoulcaller's Chant.

As always, any and all feedback is much appreciated!

Deck Update

Solomon, 13 years ago

Hello Everyone!

Click here to jump to this week's discussion.

Thank you so very much for your wonderful suggestions! For this week's update, I carefully went through all of the comments posted under this topic as of Feb. 3, 2012.

I am very pleased with the advice offered to me during the development of this deck. To promote fast, comprehensible reading, the update log "format" is a shorter, concise bullet list. Without further ado, I would like to explain the changes incorporated into the creation of the fifth and final revision.

Change Log:

- Replaced three Unholy Grotto with two Cabal Coffers and one Unholy Grotto
- Cleaned up Maybeboard
- Added new Card of the Week article
- Finalized deck list
- Added 'Additional Improvements' Section
- Miscellaneous description changes

Thank you so very much for the helpful suggestions that were submitted this week in the comment section. I especially appreciate thefiremind's well-thought recommendations, explaining every single one of his choices in detail. I have seriously considered replacing all four copies of Diregraf Ghoul with Gravecrawler. It is true that neither of these one-drops can block on the first turn; however, I am counting on the former to successfully chump block in the game's subsequent rounds. In my opinion, I would rather sacrifice a Diregraf Ghoul than give up an Undead Warchief or Death Baron. However, thank you so much for your suggestion!

I have considered implementing Cabal Coffers on two separate occasions throughout the development of this deck. The first time around I implemented the card onto the deck's mainboard and playtested with it multiple times. After many runs, I realized that since the land does not begin to yield profits until the fourth turn, it may not be worth implementing the card. However, after being reminded of its usefulness a third time by thefiremind (thank you so much!), I feel that I may lose out on an amazing mid-game mana acceleration opportunity if I do not include it. Therefore, I have decided to list exactly one copy of Cabal Coffers. I feel that implementing a single copy will allow me to enjoy the possibility of enormous mana acceleration without incurring interference in my ability to draw much-needed Swamps. Originally, my card list (pre-first revision) ran two Shepherd of Rots. However, I realized that I would never accumulate enough Zombies for the damage wrought by the creature's activated ability to prove significant; therefore, I have decided not to include this otherwise extremely valuable creature in the deck. However, thank you so very much for your wonderful input and recommendations!

I have long considered switching the land base to incorporate either graveyard hate (in the form of Bojuka Bog, card advantage (with Barren Moor, or land destruction Ghost Quarter). However, in the end I felt that focusing on the deck's main strategy of playing and reanimating Zombies would prove the most effective. As a result, I have decided not to alter the deck's land base. Nevertheless, thank you kram130 so much for your wonderful, wonderful recommendations!

Following this post are my comments for the final Card of the Week. Again, thanks for all of the thoughtful comments! As I am still relatively new to Magic the Gathering, I would very much appreciate any further suggestions and/or constructive criticism that you may have to offer.

Death Baron:

Death Baron

One of the most powerful zombies of all time, this card serves as an important staple of this deck's main strategy.

Thank you so very much for all of the wonderful suggestions recommending useful Zombie additions! After carefully reading every one of the comments posted since last week's update, I decided to feature my interpretation of an incredible three-drop with this latest update. My choice for this revision is Death Baron.

As a Lord, this creature feeds into the deck's main strategy of compiling multiple Lords on the battlefield. With its ability to grant all your Zombies deathtouch, you'll be destroying your opponent's army, no matter its strength, in no time! As the one creature that can turn your chump blockers into doom-bringing machines, Death Baron functions as a necessary component of this card list.

As one of the highest rated Zombies on the Gatherer, it is no wonder why this Lord was included. To conclude briefly, the numerous players on Gatherer recommending Death Baron have been dead on. As a well-deserved veteran of this deck, let's give this priceless three-drop a warm welcome!

Just a fun deck I made to express how much the Phyrexian influence has spread; even seeping into White

This deck is pretty much straightforward. Although that may very well be it's downfall... It uses 2-4 drop creatures to Infect and deny your enemy of attacking forces (Priests of Norn) First Strike is mean, as well as Infect. So why not combine both? With Hyena Umbra and Seize the Initiative, the opposing forces quickly reduce to waste. And with Totem Armor, it makes your creatures harder to kill. Sometimes you want your creatures to die (Necropede and Core Prowler) but your enemy doesn't allow you. There's an easy solution to that, Piston Sledge! Ichor Wellspring is also willing to be sacced into the Sledge, every card counts here. The overall weakness of this deck is Flying, there is only one card that grants Flying here, and that's Armored Ascension. If the game drags on for too long, you can count on True Conviction as a fun finisher, or a table-turner.

+1 Swamp, +2 Lashwrithe -1 Diregraf Ghoul, -1 Tragic Slip, -1 Liliana of the Veil I wanted to add an extra Swamp to make up for the land destruction aspect of Smallpox, and I wanted to add Lashwrithes to make a reasonable clock out of anything that isn't a Phyrexian Obliterator. I took out a Liliana of the Veil and a Tragic Slip to accommodate the new threat.

what a crap playtester

n1v_m1zzet, 13 years ago

Well, the addition of Eye of Ugin did work like a treat for the first 3 or so games, but then...my game closer went from happening around turn 4/5 (after about 20 trial games) to around turn 5/6! And I think it has something to do with the crappy "randomisation" algorithm employed by the playtester. After adding the eye of ugin, I found it appearing in my opening hand in about 1 in 5 games. That's 10.6 in 53. But it's a 1 of, it should only be appearing in 7 of 53 games. So it's appearing almost twice as much as it should!!!! Not to mention, other cards that are 4 ofs are hardly appearing at all, relative to the eye. I'm going to take the eye out and see how it goes -- I would like to revert to the original build before I added the eye (as I've changed a few other inconsequential things), but even the changelog is a piece of sh!t -- it hasn't tracked half of my changes!!

Pre-FNM

aloehart199, 13 years ago

Well I'm taking this deck to FNM tonight and playing it. Why? Cause I wanna have fun and my booster boxes of dka aren't going to arrive before its time to go. So before I get to FNM with this I decided to drop the darksteel plate in exchange for manor gargoyle. The plate requires far too much work to become useful, and the gargoyle adds a good defender to keep me alive until I can drop a hit with world slayer.

I added Eye of Ugin (can't believe I didn't have that card), and it's definitely improved the chance of drawing Emrakul -- not quite as good sa having the 4x spawnsire, but virtually there, and much, much cheaper. I love how when the eye's out and the cloudpost combo's gone off, the opponent doesn't get another turn!
