The Deck
Naya Zoo is finally playable again with Hogaak ban, SFM unbanning, and a plethora of new toys from Throne of Eldraine! This is my take on modern Zoo featuring Embercleave with the stock stoneblade equipment package. Embercleave works great as either a surprise lethal attack or something to cheat into play with Stoneforge Mystic . Deploying it in game one will make game two even better as I can always attack with Embercleave mana open to make combat decision real awkward and difficult for my opponent. Embercleave + Batterskull is pretty nuts.
Card Choices
- Once Upon a Time : Okay, I gotta admit that this card is pretty bonkers in this deck. It allows me to go down on my land count and decrease my mulligan decision with it in my opening hand.
- Bonecrusher Giant : Early game interaction and mid game threat that makes removal painful.
- Stoneforge Mystic : Obviously the linchpin of the deck that makes Embercleave playable in modern.
- Giver of Runes : Protects Stoneforge Mystic to safely deploy an early Batterskull .
- Tarmogoyf : This creature with Embercleave is pretty broken. With 4 power, I can essentially deal 10 damage a swing.
- Qasali Pridemage : Makes a lone attack dangerous as well as removing problematic artifact/enchantments like Blood Moon / Ensnaring Bridge .
Sideboard
- Elspeth, Knight-Errant : Great against aggro-centric decks and also the mirror. Provides combat superiority in addition to equipments.
- Auriok Champion : Great against burn decks.
- Thalia, Guardian of Thraben : Tech against storm and other combo decks.
- Gaddock Teeg / Sword of Fire and Ice : I love bringing these in for control matchups.
- Collector Ouphe / Ancient Grudge : Tech against fast artifact-based combo decks like Urza and its variants.
- Rest in Peace : Excellent against a wide variety of the field including the new type of control decks relying on the graveyard using Drown in the Loch .
- Sword of Light and Shadow : It provides protection to 2 of the most common removal spell in the format as well as the ability to get creatures back (combos really well with Qasali Pridemage ). Great to bring in against removal heavy decks like Jund.
Notable Omissions
- Bloodbraid Elf : This deck functions with low cmc creatures and this card doesn't fit my build. It's great in big Zoo builds.
- Scavenging Ooze : Unfortunately didn't make the list to make space for other more impactful cards. Rest in Peace serves as a better sideboard tech for graveyard hate.
- Lightning Helix : This card has been outclassed (IMHO) by Bonecrusher Giant .
- Voice of Resurgence : Has been lackluster in this build from testing.
