This deck shifts my Rin & Seri deck to a budget build with Arahbo, Roar of the World at the helm. As with my other recent decks, there's an obvious tribal hook (cats) but the deck also has a more specific non-tribal strategy--in this case, "Voltron." Unlike many other such decks, this one isn't necessarily trying to win off commander damage. Instead, Arahbo's ability pumps any one of your cats, which can come out early and are easily replaced, into a significant threat on any turn of the game. In addition, there are a handful of minor combos that play in the deck's subthemes of lifegain and +1/+1 counters.

Deck Structure

This deck has been built using the 8x8 method. Half the modules fulfill typical functions you'd expect to see in any commander deck, while the other half support the specific themes of this deck.

For every deck, I include a module for ramp, removal, and card draw, preferably filled with cards that align with the deck's theme rather than generic spells that could go in any deck.

  • Ramp: Cats don't lend themselves to any specific ramp effects, but green provides plenty of ways to ramp. In this case, I grabbed cards that supported the subthemes of lifegain and +1/+1 counters, along with some fairly generic ramp cards.
  • Removal: Cats prove to be exceptional at taking out artifacts and enchantments, so you should have no problem dealing with those. Creature removal relies outsizing creatures on the battlefield or surprising attackers with some creatures with flash. I also provided a couple minor ways to deal with flyers.
  • Card Draw & Selection: Card draw effects here rely on having a number of creatures on the battlefield, which is doable but perhaps harder than getting a single big creature. So far, card draw has not been a problem, because the deck can bring about fairly swift endings.
  • Fun: This module includes a variety of miscellaneous effects, including some combo pieces, a surprise Voltron target, and a couple other neat cards that don't really fit in anywhere else.

The other half of these modules further contribute to the knights tribal and equipment themes.

  1. The Tokens module pumps out cat tokens. These might not seem relevant in a deck that wants to win with a single attacker, but these tokens can get big quickly. At the very least, they serve as chump blockers, allowing you to keep swinging away with your main attacker. They also provide the fuel for the primary card draw effects in the deck.
  2. The +1/+1 Counters module provides ways to add these little boosts to any of your cats. These can pump up your Voltron or enable more of a "go wide" strategy. They also--somewhat surprisingly--synergize quite well with the next module.
  3. The Lifegain module includes cats with lifelink and various other ways to gain life. These effects can not only keep you in the game if they go long but also provide some surprising fuel for the +1/+1 counters module. There's also the classic alternate win condition-- Felidar Guardian --which is conveniently a cat.
  4. The "Defensive/Vigilance/Voltron module needs a better name but basically aims to play the long game with beefy creatures that can block anything that comes your way. These sizeable creatures can ultimately become your ultimate threat in the endgame, as they have protection or are indestructible. I'm not sure how necessary these are, as the deck seems to be fast enough in casual environments.
