Hazoret's Undying Fury

Sorcery

Shuffle your library, then exile the top four cards. You may cast any number of nonland cards with converted mana cost of 5 or less from among them without paying their mana costs. Lands you control don't untap during your next untap step.

Andramalech Just a couple quick thoughts going off your thoughts/concerns.

  1. Plans change. Even though you never plan on casting ardent plea you should be able to if the need arises. Think about it like this. A single copy in your hand keeps you from either drawing 3 cards or making 2 4/4 creatures. Do you really want to handicap yourself when all you would need to do is add 1 white producing land?

  2. Math speaking 3 ardent pleas are not enough pitch cards for your 3 solitudes. The same goes for the flare of denials. You really need more sources to make good use of them. After all you put them in your deck to serve a purpose, give them the best opportunity to fulfill that purpose.

  3. I understood the cascade chaining of spell completely, but just like taking stairs you want to know that next spot is a step! This is why you should focus your deck in a way that guarantees you hit the cards you want...even if it's more cascaders.

  4. I don't think you're grasping all that outburst and opus are offering from a play perspective. They give you the following...1. A W source to cast ardent plea or solitude with. 2. Ramp for a single turn that you can create at instant speed...this allows you more bluffing/interaction possibilities. 3. They will never be the wrong card when you cascade! 4. There was something else but I lost my train of thought...if it returns I'll repost.

  5. Arena of glory is not a mana fixing card, it's a haste giver. Temur devotee is a little bit better but its effect is mana neutral and only useable once per turn. I think it's a decent blocker for the cost though but not something I would want to hit off my cascades.

My overall suggestions to help:

Trade things like mox tantalite, ignoble hierarch, and temur devotee towards lands...16 is not enough especially when only 10 produce mana. This will smooth out your cascades some and help you cast things more reliably, not to mention give you space for a W source to cast ardent plea. I would even consider taking a look at bloodbraid marauder since hitting delirium will be hard for this deck to do.

  1. In the sideboard consider switching flare of denial for Force of Negation. You are an essentially an aggro deck which makes you weaker against combo decks. Force will still let you counter spells like Goblin Charbelcher or Green Sun's Zenith while being able to use more of your blue spells as fodder.

  2. Random card ideas to start the cascade chains Hazoret's Undying Fury...if you want to try this you must have more lands!

Lowly pawn

Human - Soldier

lifelink shadow

whenever ~ deals combat damage to a player put an advance counter on Lowly pawn

When the 3rd advance counter is placed on pawn exile it and return it to the battlefield transformed under your control

1/1

"once a lowly pawn became"

Queen

Legendary creature - Human

Whenever queen attacks destroy target creature then if that player controls no creatures they lose the game

9/9

"more powerful than the king"

during amonkhet there was a cycle of 5 cards to Rhonas's Last Stand Bontu's Last Reckoning Kefnet's Last Word Oketra's Last Mercy Hazoret's Undying Fury

these cards have a very cool design style because one of Amonkhet's mechanics was exert where you go all out in one go and if you don't win oops. but it's a calculated risk.

make a new card along the same lines like (Squee's last mistake or something) that might be playable

Here are my picks for weakest cards, without much justification except that for the most part I don't see them doing anything important with Riku, too expensive for what they do, or are too specific:

Spore Frog
Animist's Awakening
Desperate Ritual
Parcelbeast
Reshape the Earth
Sakura-Tribe Scout
Savage Ventmaw
Seething Song
Deconstruct
Hypergenesis
Sunbird's Invocation
Pull from the Deep Volcanic Vision
Wild Ricochet
Hazoret's Undying Fury
Brainstorm
Surrak Dragonclaw
Swarm Intelligence
Dual Casting
Volcanic Torrent
Decimate (since you need all legal targets, it can be awk to cascade into this one)
Amulet of Vigor
Trinket Mage
Murkfiend Liege
Wort, the Raidmother
Mana Reflection
Genesis Ultimatum
Cast Through Time

And I'm also recommending cutting all of your X spells that can be hit and missed with Cascade: Electrodominance
Genesis Wave

However, I'll echo what another commenter said in that cascade doesn't interact with Riku all that much. I mean, you can copy the permanents or spells cast off of Cascade, but you can't meaningfully copy the Cascade cards. You could choose to cut the Cascade package instead. It's up to you and what you want to play.

So that's my first evil pass at 30 cuts. :)

Personal opinions on what to cut, feel free to completely ignore or disagree with anything/everything. I tend to construct lower curve decks, so I know that's a bit different.

Cut: Reshape the Earth , It's super expensive and while it can definitely be used to help thin out lands from your deck in the late game it will also act as a dead draw for quite a while. With all this other ramp you're packing it feels superfluous.

Search for Tomorrow , there are better 3 cost basic land fetches if that's what you're using it for.

Peregrine Drake , if you aren't running this with a combo piece like Deadeye Navigator I personally wouldn't include it. I understand cloning it on ETB could net you a +3 mana advantage on that turn, but it seems a little cumbersome to be worth it to me.

You have other ramp pieces I would probably cut, but it would depend on what other pieces throughout the deck you decide to keep etc.

Cast Through Time , I don't think it's worth the CMC for the number of Instants and Sorceries you run considering this isn't spellslinger/storm.

Hazoret's Undying Fury not worth it for it's CMC and downside. This would be best cut, or just replaced with an Escape to the Wilds .

Mizzix's Mastery / Magus of the Mind I would cut them for the same reasons, that this deck isn't super spellslinger/storm and that the spots could be better used.

Pull from the Deep , it's fine, but meh.

Volcanic Vision , to me it's CMC is too high for what it brings to the table.

Those are my cuts for now, but I'm going to second Omniscience_is_life in suggesting you add Tatyova, Benthic Druid and The Great Henge , as well as suggest Elixir of Immortality as a general utility recursion card.

I get that sometimes people want to get straight into the card culling sometimes (since others have in fact provided feedback on the decklist) but there is an old adage about not putting the cart before the horse.

If you're not leaning into spell based win conditions, stuff like Mizzix's Mastery , Volcanic Vision , Hazoret's Undying Fury , etc all don't make sense here. These are spellslinger deck cards designed to work with a high storm count. Swarm Intelligence , Charmbreaker Devils and Twinning Staff are in the same vein. Remember, most of your instants and sorceries will just be ramping or some sort of card draw. If the deck is unable to operate unless you're copying/cascading these spells, then you have a fundamental issue with the deck.

I also don't think that cascade is the right choice here. Again, it's a mechanic that works well with "storm count matters" decks. That is not a battlecruiser strategy. You're better off just focusing on a craplaod of ramp and then hardcasting a big creature to then copy it. It means that you can focus on creatures that give you more bang for buck (think cards like Inferno Titan ) rahter than just a big creaature that will cascade into a mana dork and then be a vanilla beater (oh, and you don't get another cascade trigger off the copy since it just makes a token).

I also think that Ghalta, Primal Hunger is a bit of a catch 22 here. Sure, it's a big beater, but you can't copy it with Riku. On top of that, other than trample it's just a big creature and RUG doesn't exactly struggle to give stuff trample. Why not run Eldrazi instead? at least they give you cast triggers. Or Avenger of Zendikar who is a one man army (especially when cloned). You're alsonot running cards like Warstorm Surge or Terror of the Peaks who actually thrive in battlecruiser decks.

This is why it's really important ti dientify the actual win con of the deck rather than just jumping into cullign cards. Because there are lots of good cards, they just may not suite the deck. And without that clarity, you end up with a camel.

K thanks, I've been trying Hazoret's Undying Fury in a cascade deck can you suggest a better card?

moo1234 on The amonkhet "last stand" cycle …

So remember in Amonkhet that cycle of cards which all did something pretty powerful for their cost, but then had the massive downside of almost making you skip a turn:

From what I can tell they are:

In commander losing a turn is pretty bad. I have my own opinion's on each of them, but there is a clear worst in commander (spoiler it's Rhonas's Last Stand)

Anyway, I only have used Bontu's last yell in commander, and it's pretty good early game, and a last resort late game (overall as it goes a pretty good card).

Amyway my question is: Does anyone have their own experience using this cycle and what do you think of them?
