Contemplating my weaknesses

AJ_ROGAN, 11 years ago

I want to talk about the weakest cards in each card type I believe I have. Lands: I actually don't think any of these lands do not have a purpose. They might not be optimized to be able to properly cast all of my spells (sometimes it can be hard to get things cast on time) but I am liking 37 lands and I am liking the 37 I have so far. Artifacts: The only artifact that is questionable is Gilded Lotus. It isn't exactly useful ramp at 5 mana. This slot might be better utilized on some earlier ramp spell. Instants: Nearly all of them put in serious work and have enough balance across the board to deal with any possible threats. It is hard to say what I would cut as I am usually very happy to have any of them in hand. I might even want more. Sorcery: Am I overkilling it on the wrath effects? Damnation is the most solid and helpful early. Decree of Pain is nice due to being a cantripping uncounterable wrath when you need it to be as well. Overwhelming Forces has actually been a lot better than I thought. If the game goes long casting Overwhelming Forces on your last opponent and swinging for lethal is really good. Toxic Deluge is another early wrath that helps against the fast decks while also having an answer to Indestructible guys. As I am weak to Indestructibility right now I should consider adding in some black exile effects. Skyshroud Claim, Cultivate and Kodama's Reach are must-haves for the deck. Farseek I want to eventually replace with Sylvan Library because Library not only filters but also draws if I need it to. Tempt with Discovery has overperformed in the deck. Almost no one turns down the ability to tutor out an untapped utility land for free, which nets you 3+ lands for 4 mana. That leaves Death by Dragons, Maelstrom Pulse, Patriarch's Bidding and Primal Command. Death by Dragons is really cute because not only does it put out a bunch of dragons but we can then steal them with Karrthus if need be. Patriarch's Bidding is a major wincon of the deck. Primal Command is untuck, pesky permanent removal, or (most of the time irrelevant) lifegain. The only questionable card is Maelstrom Pulse. Its sorcery speed doesn't really forgive its targeting flexibility (and the ability to punish EDH staples by blowing up everyone's sol ring for example). Still wondering if I want to instead consider some more exile removal instead of this as I am currently weak to indestructible. Enchantments: These contain some of the biggest collection of question marks in the deck. Asceticism, Crucible of Fire and Sneak Attack just win games. Phyrexian Arena is just amazing card advantage but also a huge target (and potentially a life-threatening problem). Greater Good and Perilous Forays are our sacrifice outlets and both work well in the deck. Pernicious Deed is another wrath effect that doubles as a "rattlesnake." There's a lot of wrath in this deck... Dragon Roost and Phyrexian Reclamation are my two "Do I really need these cards?" Dragon Roost is amazing in the deck for obvious reasons but it might be just better replaced by another dragon. It is really really expensive for the effect. Phyrexian Reclamation might not be necessary as I have Volrath's Stronghold but, having an instant speed way to stop graveyard hate might be good. These are my two flex slots here.

Started with 2 Gemstone Mine. Forgot Pendlehaven. Put those in.

I'm noticing that most of the time Exploration and Gaea's Touch aren't doing anything, as my commander just out ramps them. I think I might sub them out for some more forests, as they are the most important card in the deck, lol.

Flipping and Flopping

If anyone has noticed, I made a few changes, going back and forth with the control cards and milling cards. After testing, I've come to the conclusion that the control element is much more valuable.

Sadly Lazav, Dimir Mastermind, is going to be moved into the maybe board in place of Fog Bank. Any suggestions are completely welcome.

Lastly, my description is going to be out of date until I do some more testing and come to terms of what cards and aspects I want to keep in this deck.

Question.

Does Agent of the Fates ability work if he is pulled from the graveyard using the Whip of Erebos?

So decided to do away with the Ghor-Clan Rampager and main board the Selesnya Charm. I am up for recommendations for my sideboard cause I don't think I need the ghor clans. My friend suggested mending touch. What do you guys think and any other suggestions?

So, after pulling Dack Fayden, I decided to do some shifting around, adding Comet Storm and Gridlock for extra synergy with Dack and Battlefield Thaumaturge
