Using the Exile Zone as a Modern Wincon

While going through my collection I came across the quirky/niche card Misthollow Griffin ; and wondered "What could be done with this guy?"

A few other "cast from exile" creatures I know about from the hip that have been printed more recently than Misthollow Griffin are Squee, the Immortal and Eternal Scourge . The 3/3 Flyer and the 3/3 and 2/1 bodies dont exactly seem like impressive win conditions on their own but with the power of recursion and late game value with tools like Moorland Haunt ; in the right shell could these creatures be put into a deck that was more than just a theme/gimmick brew?

My thoughts about it... Show

What kind of shell/colors would you use and what do you think some other good cards to hold the deck together could be?

Anger of the Gods is currently well positioned and is on theme

Theres also a weird little insta kill with Crackling Drake and Selective Memory but memory would also essentially fill your hand with all your creatures.

It's probably to cute to be viable but it's still cool!

There are some versions of Skred Red that play Eternal Scourge + mainboard Relic. Since the deck is good at stalling with sweepers and Blood Moon the late-game value plan works pretty well for it, though I think the usual (and preferred) win-cons are Chandra and Koth of the Hammer /Dragons/Rabblemaster. The mainboard Relic version of Skred Red probably has a better chance in the current meta, though.

Perhaps Inverter of Truth has a place here? 6/6 flyer to distract as you pull the other little bodies out of exile? If that doesn't work there's always Laboratory Maniac .

I have seen dcks with maindeck RIP, Heartless Summoning , SerumPow and EtrnScg for fubn combos. There is also a fate Reforged Mythic that can be put onto the battlefield from exile for a exorbitant fee.

Flooremoji that card would be Torrent Elemental

That skred red/pyro prison does seem pretty legit as it's an established decklist/shell (and a very small shell too with lots of wiggle room for adjustments/preferences)... nice call!

but I gotta say that the serum powder/ Heartless Summoning eternal scourge sounds pretty cheeky though! I would say that Inverter of Truth would be awesome but I dont think that you can cast the creatures as the ability resolves... i can see a lot of potential in with things like Cremate / Surgical Extraction .

could always play Path to Exile and if your opponent doesn't have anything you need to kill, use it on your own creature for a bit of mana ramp. then just cast the creature again.

Exile is the New Graveyard is a deck I put together while back that tries to do this

Well, Eldrazi processors are using the exile zone to fuel their abilities. Additionally, Delay is a seriously underrated counterspell. I have built the ProcEspers deck specifically for those interactions.

Cast from exile cards are normally used with Food Chain in legacy to combo off into infinite mana.

The new kaya is pretty good, and there is some lists that use the Wasteland Strangler and effects like Path to Exile , Relic of Progenitus , Thought-Knot Seer , Tidehollow Sculler , and Flickerwisp to perma-remove opponent's cards while getting value by killing other creatures.

Otherwise, Narset cannon using Serum Powder , Gemstone Caverns , and Spoils of the Vault turn one to exile a Narset, then Pull from Eternity it into the yard, and Goryo's Vengeance it out to win. That is the main wincon, and it often goes off turn one because of Spoils and Serum Powder as a 1 mana Demonic Tutor and 0 mana Timetwister respectively, with Sphinx of Foresight as a playset for more consistency to go of turn one.

The rest of the deck is more consistency, an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn as a replacement Narset, some Faithless Looting s for digging and discarding a Narset/Emrakul, Simian Spirit Guide s for mana, and cards for Narset to freecast to win. The main combo is hitting Enter the Infinite , topping a sole copy of Omniscience . Then you use the high number of red spells and Fury of the Horde s to attack again, getting an Omniscience. Cast an Emrakul from hand to get another turn and win, and freecast another Enter the Infinite to top another card whenever you have an empty library and need to not die. If you exiled your combo pieces, just Pull from Eternity them into the yard, and if it is an Emmy, it will reshuffle into the deck, it is was an Omniscience or something else than Emmy, you just need to Exile a Spirit Guide, Looting to discard the Emrakul, then reshuffle.

Oh wow those are some pretty cool decks and ideas/combos everyone. That Kaya, Orzhov Usurper does look pretty sweet too!

Rest in Peace and constantly exiling Misthollow Griffin and the others upon death is just hilarious. thanks for sharing.

New Kaya seems solid for this, but the recursion of those exile dorks should be able to seal the game on their own if you can stall.

if you can protect Kaya to her ult, she stalls for you and can readily nuke someone past a stalled board if you are on the defensive constantly though, i.e. they have chump blockers or bigguns for days.
