Sensei's Divining Top, Ancestral Knowledge, and Scroll Rack are essential cards.

Also obligatory Jace, the Mind Sculptor suggestion.

This deck looks enjoyable, and like a lot of fun to pilot. At a glance, I'd say the mana curve isn't optimal regarding the ability of your Commander, but you will be able to figure that out and fine-tune it while playing (I actually have a Modern Evolve deck that I had a lot of fun with, figuring out a curve that would work great!)

Lantern of Insight seems like an auto-include, since it's a single-card topdeck control and coming at a price that seems to work for your Commander's ability. Like the previous commenter, though, I would most definitely play Sensei's Divining Top.

Dismiss and Exclude could help toughen up your counter base, while providing extra card draw, and so could Cryptic Command.

And then there's Shardless Agent, of course!

Quail, thanks for the suggestions. Those indeed would work great in here. However, I don't own copies and they are rather pricey. With Sylvan Library, Mirri's Guile, and Oracle of Mul Daya I already have a fair number of spendy cards in here. If I pick them up, they'd definitely go in here.

BlueScope, Lantern of Insight would be wonderful in here...thanks :) As for the counterspells, I think I have enough in here. If anything I think the deck needs a little more aggro game finishers. Do you have any win condition cards you'd suggest? What do you mean about not having an ideal mana curve? Should it be higher to get more free stuff with Rashmi?

As for curve, I meant that you seem to have a lot going on at exactly two or three mana, then another "blob" at 4 to 6. I'm not necessatrily saying that's not going to work out, but a smoother curve that peaks at 3 or 4 mana would seem better to me. As I said, though, just keep mental notes while playing, and until you know whether your curve is working, don't change anything - if you notice that you have to manipulate the top of your library to hit anything, it's time to adjust.

I just noticed that lands fall flat as well - this means you might want to play a few more mana rocks instead of lands, such as Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault or Springleaf Drum. This isn't the deck for Mox Opal, unfortunately, otherwise that would be a great card to have.

And as for finishers, all I can think of are typical EDH staples: Overwhelming Stampede, Tooth and Nail, Defense of the Heart, Vigor...

And actually, you need to include Yeva, Nature's Herald - since Rashmi triggers for the first spell each turn, there's no reason you shouldn't be casting spells on your opponent's turns.

Also, keep in mind that you don't have to cast the first spell from your hand, but could also use Isochron Scepter or a similar card. If you stick a big-enough instant onto it, you have yourself an engine!

BlueScope, thanks for clarifying and I see what you mean! I'll test it once Rashmi comes out to see if I'm getting any "free play" triggers from her or if I always need to set up.

The way I see it, even if I don't get to play the card that's revealed with Rashmi, I'm still ahead (obviously not as much as if I DO get to play it). It's still card advantage. If a commander said "Whenever you cast your first spell each turn draw a card", it would still be a solid commander. I kinda consider the ability to sometimes play that card for free a really sweet bonus on top.

The only reason I don't have those mana rocks (and Tooth and Nail) already is because they are banned in my playgroup :(. I'm not too worried about top-decking land with Rashmi since, like I said, at least it's still card draw. I see myself never having to worry about being mana screwed lol.

Yeva is a great suggestion on top of Leyline of Anticipation and Vedalken Orrery :) I can throw in Overwhelming Stampede too. Thanks!

Crystal Ball, Sigiled Starfish and Darksteel Pendant are all cheap (monetarily speaking) options for filtering. I use Crystal Ball in my Melek deck and it's really good.

PayOneLife, thanks for the suggestions! I hadn't heard of those cards. Of your suggestions, I like Crystal Ball the best. The Scry 2 gives a very nice setup for the top deck.

Yeah it definitely is the best of the suggestions. Really they're just budget ways to get some choice over your topdeck at a low cmc. I would definitely suggest getting a hold of Scroll Rack, it is expensive but is an absolute powerhouse. When I get it in my Melek deck it's almost a guarantee that I'm going to win.

Kruphix, God of Horizons? It would give you another way to get unlimited hand size, and also help play all those cards in your hand by storing your mana. Also, indestructibility is always nice.

Thanks, Lord_Olga. I've put Kruphix in :)

I can't wait to build around this commander. I like your take on it.

I'm surprised no one has said Soothsaying, I run one in my Narset desk and it does almost as much work as Top does and it is a budget option! +1 I pulled a foil Rashmi in my booster box so I plan on building this!

I understand you want to keep the deck fun and fair for opponents, but that might have gone out the door when you made 30% of your instant and sorceries, counterspells. Then you threw the most cancerous card in EDH Cyclonic Rift. At least you don't take extra turns. So if I were you, I would either bump up the deck to its full potential with Deadeye Navigator and Craterhoof Behemoth, or take out 2 counters (Swan Song and Negate) and play some higher CMC cards like Seedborn Muse (especially with Vedalken Orrery and Leyline of Anticipation). Other possibilities are Selvala's Stampede, Regal Behemoth, Blatant Theivery, Crush of Tentacles instead of Evacuation because having an 8/8 octopus is better than not having one... Mind's Desire is fun and Spelltwine is good. Regardless of which way you choose to go with the deck, Mystic Confluence should replace your worst performing counterspell. GOOD LUCK! :)

rashaadnport, thanks for your feedback. Cyclonic Rift is actually out of the deck and replaced with Whelming Wave. Forgot to change that!

I prefer Evacuation over Crush of Tentacles for two reasons: it's an instant and it only effects creatures. I don't really want to bounce my important enchantments and artifacts to my hand. I have enough spot removal for artifacts/enchantments that I don't really care to bounce my opponents'.

I've actually thought about reducing the counterspell count to make the deck less annoying lol. Out of the cards you mentioned, I think Mystic Confluence and Regal Behemoth sound the best. Mystic Confluence is a wonderfully flexible card. The deck is mana-hungry so Regal Behemoth's mana doubling would be great.

Seedborn Muse is an amazing card. My only copy is in my Rhys deck which I think needs it more. (I'm strange and don't like to use the same copy of a card between different decks lol).

You're right that I'm overall trying to keep the deck fun. That means no extra turns, no sensei's divining top or scroll rack, no deadeye navigator, no craterhoof, and now no cyclonic rift lol :)

I see Crush of Tentacles has entered the maybeboard. Don't knock it until you try it. I was wary at first with it in my Maelstrom Wanderer deck for the same reason. But you have to remember, every card you cast either gets you a free cast or at the worst replaces itself in the hand. After wiping the board, you will get online twice as fast as opponents plus have a big octopus that someone will HAVE to deal with.

Both cards are stars in certain situations. Figure out which situations occur the most. You may not need either tbh with how fast you'll build up your board once Rashmi is online.

Also, I didn't notice Forbid in the list earlier but I'll say this now... I cut that card in my Tasigur, the Golden Fang EDH deck because no one wanted to play with me. It seems even better with Rashmi. XP

rynonator, thanks for suggesting Soothsaying. I'll consider it. I've purposely kept my top deck manipulation cards to ones that have no activation cost (Thassa, Sylvan Library, Mirri's Guile, Courser of Kruphix, Oracle of Mul Daya). I like to save my mana for counterspells and other removal. I don't want to have to worry about having enough mana for top deck manipulation too. Still, I like that soothsaying can drop on turn one. I'll think about it :)

MegaMatt13 says... #19

rashaadnport, definitely willing to give Crush of Tentacles a try. As you say, the deck doesn't need a ton of board wipes because of the card advantage and control the deck has. Still, always a good idea to have a couple board wipes in the deck just in case.

Yeah, perhaps Forbid can be one of the counterspells that can be cut. It's a little too mean. Because of the card draw Rashmi gives, I almost always have enough cards for the buyback cost. It's interesting that earlier you suggested cutting Swan Song and Negate. I know they are conditional counterspells, but I like how low CMC they are. I can have enough mana for a big creature and be able to counter something. Any reason you don't think they work here?

May i suggest Pathbreaker Ibex and Hornet Queen?

October 7, 2016 6:20 a.m.

MegaMatt13 says... #21

Hipparchos, thanks for your suggestions. Hornet Queen is great but not really on theme with the deck. Pathbreaker ibex on the other hand could potentially be a good win condition card. I usually win through one big final attack. Pathbreaker ibex could help me get there. I will look into finding a spot.

I suggest Palinchron, Great Whale, Peregrine Drake + Deadeye Navigator, and any other untap land creature or spells like Treachery, this allow to cast in your turn and untap to cast in opponent's turns too.

Hi DarkHamlet,

Thanks for taking the time to make suggestions :) Deadeye Navigator is banned in my usual playgroup. I think it may still be worthwhile to throw in at least one the creatures you mentioned though since they are essentially "free" casts.
