Centaur Garden Discussion

Spirits on Arahbo, Xenagos... for Cats EDH

Hi rofldiekatz,

Hashep Oasis is a perfect land, I'll work that one in, probably replacing Centaur Garden, it's been on the eval/cut-list for a while.

I like Ash Barrens, if I don't need to mana-fix (for ), I can still play it untapped an utilize that turn. On the other hand, If i have Forest,Forest,Ash Barrens I can fix into a Plains. Also, if the game is going on, I can pay the to filter out another land from my deck. So it never really hurts me (only helps sometimes).

Because I don't have many Equipments/Artifacts, Tree of Tales/Ancient Den are even more valuable to me. I often tutor for equipment (multiple creatures do this, sorcery, etc). I need to attack / connect / infect so often I will need to pull a protection sword, or a Grafted Exoskeleton and have high Equip costs. Because I'm not highly combo, being able to connect faster is critical. PS: I need more combos in this deck, still searching for them if you have any ideas!

Okina, Temple to the Grandfathers never hurts though either, it's a with no penalty so have to work that in as well somewhere.

I've got two more suggestions. Okina, Temple to the Grandfathers and Hashep Oasis. Maybe you could switch them in for Ash Barrens and Tree of Tales/Ancient Den. When I tried Ash Barrens in my budget version of your deck it most of the time just tended to slow me down. Of course it can help getting you the missing landtype but most of the time it didn't do anything. Tree of Tales and Ancient Den just serve for the purpose of acitvating Puresteel Paladins second ability. They are prone to removal and even if they make Metalcraft happen it doesn't seem to matter that much because you only you only got 8 equipments included anyway and are not likely to draw them for time Puresteel Paladin is on the field. Okina, Temple to the Grandfathers on the other hand does have 8 different targets and is harder to remove. Hashep Oasis is just a more consistant version of Centaur Garden that doesn't force you to pay life for mana and doesn't need 7 cards in your graveyard to be sacrificed (even though the activating cost is higher).

Since you have Mountain Valley from mirage, why not run Grasslands too? Champion of Lambholt can quickly spiral with this deck. Doubling Season+ parallel lives is always fun too

Crucible of Worlds is in now way budget, but it's amazing. THere's a new card in hour of Devastation that's a creature and green but does the same thing :P

I'm making one of these myself, but with a focus on Darien, King of Kjeldor. Ever thought of using lands like Barbarian Ring, Brushland, Centaur Garden, Llanowar Wastes, Nomad Stadium, Pine Barrens, Salt Flats, Scabland, Sulfurous Springs, or Tomb of Urami? While for my deck, they only help a lot when I have Darien out.. They can get you consistent life loss early on in the game and stay with you throughout.. even if you don't need the mana, you can float it!

wadledo: Stonebrow was just added to give the tramplers +2/+2. Since Mina and Denn, Wildborn can give trample, I just wanted a card that could enhance that part of their ability. I originally thought of having Attune with Aether in the deck, but Savage Ventmaw replaced it.

VanDerTroll: If you want to slightly bump the budget up, you can easily put in more cheap sacrifice lands like Ash Barrens (this card will come down in price soon), Archaeological Dig, Balduvian Trading Post, Jund Panorama, Centaur Garden, Crystal Vein, Throne of the High City, Warped Landscape, Mountain Valley, etc. These can replace some of the basic lands. Then, you can replace some of the "Ramp" cards with a few cards that will get these lands back from the graveyard, like Cartographer, Groundskeeper, Nature's Spiral (Which I might add to this decklist anyway), Pulse of Murasa, Stoic Builder, Tilling Treefolk, Woodland Guidance, and mostly -- Splendid Reclamation. If you go this route, I would definitely consider replacing one of the creatures with Centaur Vinecrasher.
Of course, there are many other things you can do, also. You can switch out Mina and Denn with Omnath, Locus of Rage for your commander. They both pilot the deck in different ways, but I built it to be compatible with both. As I pointed out in the description as well, Restore and Rampaging Baloths are great additions, and both are pretty inexpensive. Restore can steal the Evolving Wilds/Wooded Foothills out of somebody else's graveyard. So, that's always fun. Avenger of Zendikar is a $5 card that's a staple for landfall.
The very first thing I would upgrade, though, would be the land base. There are so many options here, and it all depends on how much you want to spend. If you're in the $10-$15 card range, Stomping Ground is a must-have. If you're looking more in the $1-3 range, Kessig Wolf Run, Reliquary Tower, Tectonic Edge, and Ghost Quarter are all great additions.

I love crazy corner cases!

I'd love to see an article on my personal favorite rules-monster: Panglacial Wurm. I am no judge, so maybe there are better interactions, but how about tapping a Centaur Garden to pay for the Wurm while at 1 life with a Lich's Mirror on the field?

Volrath's Shapeshifter and flip or double faced cards is fun too. If you find rapidly shifting memory intensive game states to be fun.

A March of the Machines, a Neurok Transmuter and an artifact gets you a typeless permanent. A tribal equipment will net you a permanent with only tribal as a type. That is a thing.
