Syr Konrad: "I'll Take 'Swords'!"

Commander / EDH Budget Mono-Black Theme/Gimmick

What's the dumbest deck idea you can think of? Left-handed tribal? All DiTerlizzi art? Nah, we can go dumber than that: alliteration. Every card in this deck begins with the letter 'S'.

History

When the idea first came to me, the first question I asked myself was what colour to run. If we want to cheat, we can use Snow-Covered lands and then use any multicoloured legend whose name begins with 'S'. If we stick with mono-coloured decks, we have a much more narrow focus. Green and blue don't have much to offer, limiting us mostly to Freyalise and Ixidor. Red and white have more options, but black... I don't know if you're aware of this, but one of the best mana rocks in the game begins with 'S'. It was all downhill from there.

Choices

There are three problematic cards for me: Shamble Back, Sifter of Skulls, and Skittering Invasion all put out creature tokens that have the audacity to not start with our favorite letter. This is annoying to me and begs to be rectified. Thankfully, I have yanked those in favor of some of Theros II: The Therosening’s offerings.

Playing the Deck

This deck wants Syr Konrad out. Yes, there are some good utility cards in there, but we get more bang for our buck if our general is on the battlefield. We have the mana rocks that our deck can utilize in a feeble attempt to ramp. We need to get Syr Konrad out as soon as possible and then start doing our thing. Just play the game: mill when you can, destroy creatures, do damage... that’s it. We don’t really have a complicated strategy here. Honestly, we’re just thankful that we can somewhat function despite our theme.

Suggestions

Updates Add

It isn’t often that this deck gets an update, as it’s very limited by it’s gimmick. Scion of Halaster has some decent synergy with our commander, however—and it starts with ‘S’, so what’s not to love? Skull Storm, meanwhile, is 9 mana to cast and… let’s be real, it’s not going to do much, given that our general is 5 mana himself. Out with the bad, in with the new.
