Archmage Emeritus

Creature — Human Wizard

Magecraft — Whenever you cast or copy an instant or sorcery spell, draw a card.

legendofa on How is Archmage Emeritus and …

Chain of Smog doesn't require that the target player actually has enough cards to discard. If you target someone with fewer than two cards in hand, they will discard their entire hand (which could be zero). So you can target and re-target yourself, no matter how many cards you have in hand.

Archmage Emeritus lets you draw a card whenever you cast or copy an instant or sorcery. So if you keep targeting yourself with Chain of Smog, you will continually draw a card, then immediately discard and draw another card. This can happen as many times as you choose, filling your graveyard and emptying your library as needed.

neo!Massacre Girl: Any good non-symmetrical burn creatures that can take advantage of this in mono-black? (Stuff like Plague Spitter will wear down your own stuff)

Kylox, Visionary Inventor: Very expensive at 7 MV, but seems fun. Works well with token-making spell cards. (Any good Ball Lightning-type token creators?)

Case of the Ransacked Lab: Finally a mono-blue noncreature Goblin Electromancer at this mana value! It turning into a quasi-Archmage Emeritus later on is just the cherry on the top. I like Cases in general too, being obviously very similar to Classes.

Dog Walker: disguise flavor feels kinda weird here

Delney, Streetwise Lookout: AFAIK e.g. Welcoming Vampire doesn't work with stuff like this. At least Esper Sentinel is still good. Also, neat Spark Double imitation with commanders like Lotho, Corrupt Shirriff

Looks great! I've built a similar deck and it's very good, here's some recommended upgrades or possible swaps for fun:

1) Crash Through can be traded for all/a few Expedite to work better with with Adeliz, the Cinder Wind and Harmonic Prodigy, albeit a little slower.

2) Balmor, Battlemage Captain adds to the whole prowess mechanic and buffs your board like Adeliz; I would replace some Umara Mystic with a few of him.

3) Viashino Pyromancer is a cheaper verison of Ghitu Journeymage and is better unless you're doing multi-player.

4) Step Through is a 2 mana tutor that costs almost nothing! Sadly it doesn't trigger prowess etc.

5) Soul-Scar Mage is a bit pricier but would be a nice one drop.

6) Naru Meha, Master Wizard and Docent of Perfection  Flip are also good lords to consider.

7) Talrand, Sky Summoner is a good budget swap for Archmage Emeritus for people who don't own any!

NonetheWeisser yeah, it's a better card, but I want to buy this deck to play against my friends, and I honestly want to try to have it as budget as I can... Archmage Emeritus, the only pretty expensive card, is in there because I already got them from a Strixhaven booster. Yes, if this was just straight up building the best possible Izzet wizard tribal I would add Lightning Bolt and other more powerful cards. (also because Shock's Archive art is so cool)

It doesn't copy the actual spells, it only copies abilities that are triggered by casting spells. So your Thermo-Alchemist will untap two times for casting one Seething Song.

If you want to draw additional cards due to Veyran's ability, you need Archmage Emeritus, it doesn't actually matter what instant or sorcery spell you cast.

Chandra, Hope's Beacon and Double Vision can actually copy the first instant or sorcery you cast per turn an additional time, but that's because of the ability on the planeswalker and the enchantment, not because of the spells you cast.

Made_Compleat, thanks for commenting. Some interesting things to consider.

Brain Freeze is a decent spell, but I think it'll be a bit too clunky to really get the best benefit. I'd need a storm count of somewhere in the ball park of 85-ish to guarantee a win with it. I'm not against using it to self mill to get a win with Jace, which sounds like it'd be a VERY good win con combined with Archmage Emeritus, Thousand-Year Storm and Veyran, Voice of Duality, or to fill the graveyard for me to cheat something out with Narset, but I wouldn't really consider that ideal in that circumstance because the ideal situation (in my mind, at least) is I'm using Narset to cast something twice.

Astral Steel is a solid-ish buffing spell, but Haze of Rage does similar with the added benefit of having a fairly easy buyback cost, especially with some of the combos I have available. Saying that, Someone I know IRL suggested Feather, the Redeemed, which would return Astral Steel to my hand at the end of turn. So that could actually be quite interesting to try out.

Galvanic Relay isn't bad, but I'd need to have a LOT of potential mana to truly benefit from it. It'll work with the Jeskai Ascendancy + Sorcerer Class combo, but for THAT to work I'd need something like Haze of Rage to build a good storm count and if I reach THAT point the smarter bet is usually to either swing in or Grape Shot

Mind's Desire, however... I like. For a few reasons but the key one is explicitly because of how it can interact with Narset. I find a way to discard it, probably though Jeskai Ascendancy, build up a decent storm count, then swing in with Narset. Exile Mind's Desire to cast a copy of it, during the combat phase, cast as many instants as I've exiled. On the second main, cast everything else. Even if that doesn't WIN I get a VERY solid board state.

I'd recommend cutting: - Hard Evidence - Hordeling Outburst - Stolen by the Fae - Octavia, Living Thesis - Niv-Mizzet, Parun - Izzet Chronarch - Izzet Chemister - Spellburst - Occult Epiphany - Prismatic Lens - Rogue's Passage

I'd recommend: - Mind Stone (This would probably be more flexible than Prismatic Lens) - Lorien Revealed - Mystic Sanctuary - Sokenzan, Crucible of Defiance - Skittering Invasion - Underworld Breach - Transcendent Message - Archmage Emeritus - Loyal Apprentice - Baral, Chief of Compliance (Potentially just doing a straight swap of this with Goblin Electromancer} - Storm-Kiln Artist - March of Swirling Mist - Crackle with Power (AWESOME win-con) - Apex of Power - Surge to Victory (This is hilarious) - Rise from the Tides - Mnemonic Deluge - Wayfarer's Bauble

Hey man! Just wanted to point out that the classic Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter combo produces infinite 9/9 Wraith Tokens via your Commander in addition to the infinite Mana it generates when you have 3+ Mana Rocks up! Also, consider adding more Mana Rocks. I typically roll with at least 10 per non-green deck. Very important for consistency, I cannot stress it enough.

I'd also recommend way more Counterspells. The fact that they allow you to break parity as easily as they do with the Wraith Tokens is absolutely bonkers. That, along with things that will help you further capitalize on that theme like Archmage Emeritus & Baral, Chief of Compliance will work wonders for this build imo, and allow you to quickly crush your opponents.

Cheers!
