Aurelia (and the Boros precon) makes my Marisi, Breaker of the Coil deck hope there's going to be some good token-gifting cards (like Combat Calligrapher).

I wonder what "Disguise" refers to. Something like Ninjutsu? Or Morph? Feels pretty blue either way for a Naya deck.

Tsukimi says... #2

Someone at WOTC mentioned the Naya deck will use Morph but I can't remember who. I like seeing Naya get new archetypes, same for the Boros deck.

I find it HILARIOUS that the commander for the Bant Clue deck (which I am very excited for) is a Vedalken? Despite looking most definitely like a Merfolk lol.

I haven't read the recent MtG storied beyond some of the TL;DR summaries. I know that some of the Guilds got hit pretty hard by the Phyrexian invasion, particularly the Simic, Golgari, and Gruul (?). The new 3-color precons definitely make it seem like Simic survivors got absorbed by the Azorius, and their combined forces are now a more investigative body. Also likely why a Simic mutant would now be Bant aligned. At face value it seems like Selesnya absorbed some of the Gruul clans.

"Disguise" definitely sounds like it could be Morph-esque. I don't think it would be a DFC mechanic, as I think MaRo has stated in the past that there are print-cost apprehensions to having DFCs in precons. The only other thing I could think of as a "disguise" would be the type of aggro effects we've seen on stuff like Ilharg, the Raze-Boar, Winota, Joiner of Forces, and Fireflux Squad. So maybe like an aggro "Creature Cascade", especially since Discover is currently in Standard.

I think polymorph-type effects would be a great design space to explore. Fireflux Squad & Reality Scramble are underappreciated

Crow_Umbra to make it worse there's this card that looks just like the face card and it is a merfolk

Spoilers are on

Hoping Nelly Borca's deck contains some new and efficient cards that give out creature tokens

Kinda wished Mirko, Obsessive Theorist also had the option to flashback an instant/sorcery for free

Missed opportunity to have a Massacre Girl murder commander deck to complement all those Detectives

Mastermind Plum seems fun, hope black will get more Treasure & artifact support. Obviously great with Prosper.

Juddith: feels kinda weird that Imp tokens are bigger than Devil ones but w/e. Gogo Blasphemous Act for a million hp.

Ertrata: Seems fun. Training Grounds helps here.

Crow_Umbra says... #8

I honestly like Mastermind Plum more for Burakos, Party Leader than Prosper, as someone who plays both.

Generally excited for the Suspect mechanic. Very interested in Nelly & Agrus Kos. At face value, I like the potential flexibility for Suspect to help push damage through, or leave attacking lanes more open. Seems like that last little something that Goad decks might need once they get into 1v1 scenarios.

Heavy sigh. Been waiting excitedly for a bant commander deck with a token focus for some fun new pieces but the face card for the bant clue deck is so wholly boring.

neo!Massacre Girl: Any good non-symmetrical burn creatures that can take advantage of this in mono-black? (Stuff like Plague Spitter will wear down your own stuff)

Kylox, Visionary Inventor: Very expensive at 7 MV, but seems fun. Works well with token-making spell cards. (Any good Ball Lightning-type token creators?)

Case of the Ransacked Lab: Finally a mono-blue noncreature Goblin Electromancer at this mana value! It turning into a quasi-Archmage Emeritus later on is just the cherry on the top. I like Cases in general too, being obviously very similar to Classes.

Dog Walker: disguise flavor feels kinda weird here

Delney, Streetwise Lookout: AFAIK e.g. Welcoming Vampire doesn't work with stuff like this. At least Esper Sentinel is still good. Also, neat Spark Double imitation with commanders like Lotho, Corrupt Shirriff

Connect the Dots: Whew, this could have easily have used dirty words like "nontoken" or "combat damage".

January 18, 2024 11:30 a.m.

Crow_Umbra says... #12

Coward_Token lol Connecting the Dots is just "What if all your creatures could be Bomat Courier with less downside?"

Does anyone know if we get normal looking border versions for the "clue" cards? I realy want to play those lands but the alt borders are annoying as always.

Jank deck idea: use Surgical Extraction (or something similar) on yourself to exile a lot of Slime Against Humanity:s from your library, then cast whatever you got left in your hand in order to make some big Oozes

January 21, 2024 5:42 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #15

Tsukimi: Let's hope the alt commander for the bant deck has something like "Clues you control are 2/2 creatures in addition to their other types."

January 21, 2024 5:52 p.m.

Tsukimi says... #16

Coward_Token I am seriously hoping but judging by the face commander don't think my hopes will be met lol

January 21, 2024 7:31 p.m.

Crow_Umbra says... #17

I'm pretty excited for Nelly Borca, Impulsive Accuser. I like that even without Goad, she still encourages opponents to attack each other. My primary meta is pretty aggro leaning, so I've come to enjoy Breena, the Demagogue & Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant type of effects. Kardur, Doomscourge is another familiar face in the meta. If it isn't explicitly Monarch, giving opponents draw-based incentive to attack each other made our games much more dynamic.

I kind of wonder if the alt face commander will be some kind of Voltron leaning build, maybe something that gets a temporary buff for each Suspected creature that the defending opponent controls.

Now that I think about it, I kind of wish the Boros precon could have been a partner commander pairing that played off the "Good Cop/Bad Cop" trope with a pair of detectives.

January 21, 2024 7:57 p.m. Edited.

Coward_Token says... #18

Yarus, Roar of the Gods: Good design but IDK why they didn't just use Nikya. They both care about permanent cards, they're both Centaur Druids, and they're both like the Gruul gods! Anyway, gogo Whisperwood Elemental, Ugin's Mastery, and maybe Omarthis, Ghostfire Initiate.

January 23, 2024 12:18 p.m.

Coward_Token says... #19

Disappointed with the new cards in the Boros deck. Too much politicking and random burn, not enough goading synergy. And the one good goading matters card doesn't work with Marisi, Breaker of the Coil or Jon Irenicus, Shattered One, my favored goading commanders. (Well, at least my rank #3 Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer is happy.)

New Feather as the Boros alt commander wasn't on my bingo sheet lol.

January 24, 2024 5:32 p.m.

Tsukimi says... #21

Really not a fan of either of the bant clue commanders, the first is boring and the other one is a weird combo of dog tribal and +1 +1 counters that just isn't my jam.... I'm gonna try and make a custom commander instead I guess.. where do we post those for feedback?

Also I do like the new feather seems fun.

Crow_Umbra says... #22

Holy crap Reanimate, Black Sun's Zenith, Animate Dead, Necromancy, and Toxic Deluge all reprinted in the Dimir precon?

Duskana, the Rage Mother is a fun and cheeky way to do either Bear Typal, or Morph/Mega Morph/Disguise/Cloak/Manifest.

At a quick glance, it seems like the Boros precon has the most underwhelming reprints, besides Jeska's Will. Glad to see it getting reprinted again.

January 24, 2024 6:22 p.m.

Crow_Umbra says... #23

Missed the edit window, but lol the Bant precon has reprints for Finale of Revelation, Bennie Bracks, Zoologist, Chulane, Teller of Tales, Farewell, and Koma, Cosmos Serpent,

Coward_Token says... #24

More whining: With Nelly Borca & Argus Kos in mind, I'm disappointed that there wasn't more EDH-playable suspect boros cards. Also, the new Feather frustrates me because only a handful of cards in the precon work with her at all, unlike the other alt-commanders in the set.

Vengeful Tracker: can't have enough Treasure hate in orbit

Illicit Masquerade: thankfully, the second ability doesn't mention "nontoken"

Kinda funny that Leyline of the Guildpact is bad with Niv-Mizzet, Guildpact (OK with the other two though.)

February 2, 2024 8:23 a.m.

legendofa says... #26

Leyline of the Guildpact -> Bloom Tender -> Coalition Victory? I'm sure there's dozen articles about this already, but I'm not going to look. I'm going to start brewing.

Coward_Token says... #27

Kinda wondering how you actually win with Kylox, Visionary Inventor? Sure, you can make sac fodder with token makers like Young Pyromancer and/or steal effects, but what do you expect to flip into with your seven mana commander? Most big burn spells in EDH have X costs, and extra turns don't do that much if you don't have something else going on after sacrificing the world.

February 4, 2024 12:42 p.m.

legendofa says... #28

Coward_Token My first thought is big tokens. Utvara Hellkite and Call the Skybreaker can churn through big chunks of your deck. If one out of every ten cards in your deck is an extra turn or extra combat spell, you might be able to get just enough punch to force a win with those two cards alone.

Of course, you need to get to that point, but that's what the rest of the deck is for.

Another random passing thought: seems to have an oddly high presence around Ravnica, and the Selesnya Conclave in particular. Ghired, Conclave Exile, Kaust, Eyes of the Glade (I think), Voja, Jaws of the Conclave, and none of the other guilds have have this semi-third-color-ness. Probably doesn't mean anything, but I thought it was interesting.

February 10, 2024 12:38 a.m.

Coward_Token says... #30

AFAIk at least Kaust works for the non-guild Agency rather than the Selesnya Conclave

I wish Marvo, Deep Operative was mono-blue and had partner so that you had more clash options, like Sylvan Echoes. Seems unlikely that they'll print a new clash commander any time soon.

I was disappointed with Etrata, Deadly Fugitive's shallow pool of cheap evasive kindred cards, but it makes more sense with Assassin's Creed in mind.

(Leondardo da Vinci EDH though? Seriously?)

February 26, 2024 4:28 p.m.

Crow_Umbra says... #34

Immediately the first thing I thought of when DaVinci was spoiled.

I didn't play the AC games, and won't be paying as close attention to that release, much like I didn't with Dr. Who (not my cup of tea, but I know others love the franchise). One of my cousins loved the franchise, so this might be how I get him to start playing MtG.
