Solving Mirrorwing

Standard Deck Help forum

Do you have ideas on how to make Zada, Hedron Grinder or Mirrorwing Dragon shine in Standard? If so, you're in the right place, and I'd LOVE to see and talk about your deck!

Archetypes that need optimization ...

  • Artifacts: Abuse Investigate effects and Artifacts-matter cards
  • Blink: Abuse Blink effects and ETB Creatures
  • Counters: Abuse +1/+1 Counter effects and Counters-matter cards
  • Energy: Abuse Energy counters and Energy-matters cards
  • Prowess: Make a good deck even better with Zada/Mirrorwing
  • Tokens: Abuse Token-makers like Silverfur Partisan, Strength of Arms and Make Mischief
  • Something else entirely?

Please don't hesitate to post your deck in large format (it makes it easier to find the decks). Here's the syntax ... just copy-and-paste, replacing the "mirrorwing-energy-kld" part with the "slug name" from your deck's URL:

[[deck-large:mirrorwing-energy-kld]]

Also, no worries if you just want to lurk. Please just click the Subscribe button here or underneath the Comment window. Thanks!

I have updated my Silverfur + Mirrorwing deck for post rotation. Moved it more into midrange, which helps it I think.

I think the energy build is stronger, but some stubborn part of me is not yet willing to give up on the werewolf focus.

Alright, Here's my spin on Zada in Kaladesh. I think there are a few abuseable cards people are missing out on that gives card advantage, and I put in a creature that you pump all of your energy into. You've got to be able to produce Energy easy for it to work, but you've also got to easily use it all.

Tell me what you think. :D

I feel like Spark of Creativity combined with the +1/+1 counter triggers in Grixis Earthen Arms Hunt the Weak along with Aetherborn Marauderand the Durable Handicraft / Animation Module has promise. Harness the Storm just for fun.

Rasanck and Rexapex,
Yeah, Spark of Creativity is awesome. Turn the whole team into Abbot of Keral Keeps? Sure, I'll take some of that!

I'm also exploring the idea of a Jund Artifacts version, which adds Underhanded Designs and Unlicensed Disintegration to the Confront the Unknown + Reckless Fireweaver + Salivating Gremlins package ...

I think I agree that a third color is the key to any artifacts matter builds. Confront the Unknown + Salivating Gremlins sounds so good.

My issue with Spark of Creativity is that Expedite gives you access to the same number of new spells, without the restriction of playing them during that turn, while also providing your creatures with haste AND at instant speed.

If we are looking for a second 1 cmc draw card, I think Renegade Tactics is still better than spark, because it could have more relevant offensive applications, is again an instant and again doesn't have the restriction of when you play those spells.

September 23, 2016 10:07 a.m.

clayperce says... #14

Vandyel,
I'm embarrassed to say I didn't notice the cantrip on Renegade Tactics. That card is suddenly much better than I thought it was! Thank you!

September 23, 2016 10:24 a.m.

Vandyel says... #15

clayperce,

I only caught it because Renegade Tactics is basically a better reprint of Stun which is a card I was considering when brewing a Zada EDH deck.

Renegade Tactics does mean that Mirrorwing may continue to have potential, even leading into Amonkhet, as Expedite Roles out with Zendikar.

I could see MD being a great way to fuel ETB decks with the gearhulks. Using Essence Flux or Acrobatic Maneuver to blink all of them at once along with Panharmonicon, that could be a game ended if you have a couple of them out. The only problem would be the high CMC of MD and the hulks.

September 23, 2016 2:41 p.m.

Vandyel says... #17

Nosoup4ne1,

Good Call.

I think the main reason I've stay away from blinking with Mirrorwing is that it required White or Blue added to the deck. Given that we're considering a 3rd color for the artifact's matter build, it might make sense.

Confront the Unknown and Tireless Tracker seem like the biggest reasons to keep Green in the deck, but we may need to reconsider their value if ETB/Blinking provides something stronger.

White, immediately has come cool options with Zada/Mirrorwing: Acrobatic Maneuver, Built to Last, Long Road Home, Mighty Leap, Pressure Point, Shoulder to Shoulder, Strength of Arms, Survive the Night, Tandem Tactics

September 23, 2016 3:32 p.m. Edited.

Nosoup4ne1 says... #18

Would Tandem Tactics and Shoulder to Shoulder actually work since it's not targeting only MD?

September 23, 2016 4:30 p.m.

Vandyel says... #19

Nosoup4ne1

Both cards use the key words "up to" which means you are not required to target two creatures if you don't want to.

I actually really like cards like that with Zada/Mirrorwing, because if you havn't gotten Mirrorwing out yet you can target two creatures to get better value out of the card.

September 23, 2016 4:45 p.m.

Nosoup4ne1 says... #20

I suppose the spell only has to be able to target a single creature not specifically a single creature. I like the support counters because they don't go away.

September 23, 2016 4:57 p.m.

clayperce says... #21

Vandyel and Nosoup4ne1,
Seems like blink effects would be best in an Energy-matters brew. Lathnu Hellion, for example, would be even better blinked ...

September 23, 2016 5:53 p.m.

Rabid_Wombat says... #22

imho in order to break Mirrorwing Dragon we have to splash White so we can re-direct the opponent's kill/bounce spells onto Mirrorwing Dragon so that he inadvertently boardwipes himself.

Hopefully Aether Revolt will give us more in the way of mana-fixing & white instants to make this type of deck happen.

It's a minor point, but not everyone on this thread is a guy. Sure "guys" in s gender-neutral term in many places, but not everywhere. Thanks!

Oh, my bad. I'm not one to get offended, so I sometimes forget my manners :/.

clayperce Can we please not bring political correctness into a discussion about MtG, please? If someone is offended by another person saying "guys," then they are either incredibly immature or are too young to be on the internet. In either case, we shouldn't cater to every whim of that party. Seriously guys, I thought we were adults here! Now, let's drop the subject, toughen up, and get back to the topic at hand.

I'm surprised at how many people discount blue as a possible combination for Zada or Mirrorwing. Slip Through Space seems right at home with them. Not to mention Thing in the Ice  Flip (yes I know that Zada does NOT instaflip it) and Curious Homunculus  Flip. Might I mention that it almost seems like Summary Dismissal was made with Zada in mind? Yes, I know that it was created to shut down Eldrazi cast triggers, but the fact that it exiles ALL spells on the stack seems too coincidental.

September 24, 2016 5:09 p.m.

Rexapex says... #31

Typical blue wizards... easily triggered, reactionary, and always mucking up things that have already resolved. :P I do agree with the Hormunculus and Summary synergies. Gruul isn't the only way to go.

DarkStarStorm and Rexapex,
I agree, Blue has a ton to offer Zada/Mirrorwing. I've just never been able to get it to work personally ...

September 24, 2016 7:16 p.m.

LeMonado says... #34

Cackling Counterpart WOULD be fun...alas. Also, I'm simply offering the stance that nit-picking a person's speech really isn't the right way to get your message across. Lead by example, lest what you want be confused with the choice of vernacular instead of actually showing love towards others. The term "Guys" has become an exceedingly gender-neutral term over the years when referring to a group, and everyone, including the group that it supposedly leaves out, uses it. I'm just saying that there IS a difference between trying to include people, and putting them on a pedestal.

What do you think about white or black being paired with Zada/Mirrorwing? I can think of a few things in Modern (Tainted Strike), but my Standard knowledge is fairly limited. Arcbond did a HILARIOUS infinite damage combo with it in standard, though Harmless Offering is worth the look of confusion on your opponent's face. They never seem to be able to comprehend why you're giving them all your creatures, but you and I both know it's for the comedy that ensues in the playgroup for trying (it doesn't actually work). Overall, I feel like any chance at Zada being broken in Standard has rotated out with Temur Battle Rage, Become Immense, and Monastery Mentor.

Dont you think the new Chandra does a greater job than Arlinn for the silverfur combo? Her +1s helps digging the library/casting more 1 mana spells, while her ult does aproximately the same job than Arlinn's.

Currently making a screw-around grixis version, will post here. Maybe it'll spark ideas but 3-color is too much when cards are a 5 drop with double color mana symbols

I would love to throw in Grotesque Mutation, but there isn't enough B support in standard to make B/R sound worth it to me. I'd love to see someone prove me wrong, though.

Been working on a R/W artifacts matter build.Ended up taking out the Blink because of token creatures.

Nosoup4ne1 gave me the idea of using Fateful Showdown as a win condition that doesn't require going into combat. Awesome suggestion.

Comments and Suggestions are welcome.

Vandyel how does that card offer a win condition? to me it looks like it wipes your own board but maybe im missing something

September 26, 2016 5:33 p.m.

Athraithe I think Vandyel is counting on the multitudinous wheel effects in order to essentially sculpt your hand into the perfect hand.

canterlotguardian but wouldnt that just basically draw out the deck and possibly leaving you with a really bad hand, since youve been drawing and discarding a ton? it seems risky to me but i still may be missing something since ive only been playing for a year

September 26, 2016 5:57 p.m.

Zygomatic says... #45

Hi, this is my version of the silverfur combo deck, i prefer sticking to the basics I think chandra helps a lot in the game plan, Eldritch evolution is a great way to get the combo early while having the mana to cast protection until the next turn. I guess i could get more toolbox value of this card with a few single slot cards, but how?(i didnt have the time to write a description of my choices but it will be done) My deck:

September 26, 2016 6:43 p.m.

Athraithe granted, it would really only be viable in something like EDH, where Psychosis Crawler could be run alongside all that card draw.

September 26, 2016 6:53 p.m.

Nosoup4ne1 says... #47

Here's the play we are talking about. You have MD and 4 creatures out. Cast Expedite on MD and copy it on the other 4 (we honestly done care about the haste, we want the cantrip), draw 5 cards, probably draw into another Expedite or Renegade Tactics and cast it again targeting MD, so with roughly 10 cards in hand we cast Fateful Showdown and hit the opponent for 10. It's a finisher, just another win con other than creature damage.

September 26, 2016 8:14 p.m.

Rabid_Wombat says... #48

So Turn 5-6 is when you cast the Fateful Showdown and ditch your hand for the win?

Sounds sweet but maybe one turn too late? Ramping Mirrorwing Dragon into play earlier with Hedron Crawlers could be the answer..

September 26, 2016 8:28 p.m.

Nosoup4ne1 says... #49

I think it would be very possible to do T6, just because you have to use the cantrip the same turn you do Fateful Showdown and MD has CMC of 5. If you could manage to get them to 13 life by T5 then it's just crazy enough to work.

September 26, 2016 8:34 p.m.

Rabid_Wombat says... #50

Chandra, Torch of Defiance +1 for two extra red mana could make it crazy enough happen.

She's such a powerful mid-game board state stabilizer...might have to trade for a couple ;)
