Argeaux Pyromancer / Deck Doctor

Chandra Roaring Flame
I love building decks! Playing them is a secondary joy.
I also enjoy pretty art, interesting and funny flavour text, and foil cards.
This game, and its mythology, fascinates me.

Most of the decks I have created here I own in physical form.

If you need help with one of your Standard decks then hit me up for some advice.
I have the ability to see where a deck might face problems, and how to shore it up against them.

A huge CONGRATS on the #1 for Monothopters [Frontier]!
Sometimes the ends really do justify the means! :-)

By the way, the whole S. "Grim Reaper" Bannon thing reminded me of the old Archenemy Scheme cards (especially the flavor text). A Display of My Dark Power, perhaps? Or Embrace My Diabolical Vision?

//

Went 2-3 last night with Serious Infection. I played tight (i.e. I could have certainly made some better plays, but had no real misplays) and think I boarded well (with one exception), so have no right to complain. But I'm going to anyways: Having to face not just one but TWO decks with Melira, Sylvok Outcast in the main? Really?!? :-D

Yeah, that's an AWESOME approach! I saw the changes late last night and thought it was funny and extremely clever. I had heard about Trump's call with Turnbull, so I got that reference, but I didn't get the Grim Reaper piece at first (I love SNL, but just don't watch it consistently). I Googled it though and found the sketch. Hilarious ... well, except that "America first. Australia sucks. Your reef is failing. Prepare to go to war. Click" is probably much closer to reality than I wish ... :-(

I'm TOTALLY with you on people who will folder decks but not upvote them. When I was really pushing Craig Wescoe's Dogs in Boats I got SO sick of exactly that.

I found a quick note helped quite a bit ... maybe 50% of the folder-no-upvote folks pulled their heads out. I had this in a separate doc (so I could copy-and-paste it onto their wall easily):

I'm glad you like [[craig-wescoes-dogs-in-boats]] enough to put the deck in a folder!

Since you 'foldered' it though, could you please go ahead and +1 Upvote it too?

Thanks!

As for the other 50% ... well, people like that make me wish T/O tracked karma like reddit (in T/O of course we can upvote decks, but on reddit I can upvote and downvote users, comments, and threads). I haven't brought that idea up to yeaGO yet ... though I guess I just did :-)
Another option (and an easier one) might be to just automatically give a +1 to any deck that gets foldered?

By the way, I don't think it matters if people try to keep the #1 spot ... I'm not sure on the rules, but the system drops you off no matter what. I noticed that back with Gruul Wolves (EMN Zada) 7/29/16. I was being one of those people, and though I featured like mad to keep the deck at #1, it fell off entirely. Since then, I've stopped featuring when I hit #1 and it seems like I get 2 or 3 days in the top slot, either way.

Speaking of swearing, have you ever seen Thug Kitchen? The recipes themselves are great, but the write-ups are fucking hilarious. ;-)

Do you have good budget Frontier deck you could refer me? I would like to play Frontier. (Maybe if you can upgrade my Mechanize Those Artifacts to make it better with any cards you know are Frontier Legal).

In a way my objective is to get a Frontier Legal deck and a Standard legal deck that are good and economic

I actually completely forgot about that deck until I saw Whirler Rogue in your deck! I might actually try to put a modified version together for Frontier if it takes off at my LGS.

Also, you are very encouraging, and I wanted to say thanks!

That Blind Eternities piece was totally inspired! :-D
Thanks for sharing as I was not subscribed there. I am now though!

I notice you're toying with Frontier. My favorite LGS is not really interested, but I've been watching it unfold and hope it becomes a thing. Anyways, I wanted to share a few links (sorry for the spam if you already have 'em!):

Not sure they'll be super-useful, as Frontier metas seems even more localized than Standard. But maybe a good place to start if you're looking for a gauntlet ...

So Humility affects creatures in a couple layers.

Layer 1: Copy effects are applied.
Layer 2: Control-changing effects are applied.
Layer 3: Text-changing effects are applied.
Layer 4: Type-changing effects are applied. These include effects that change an objects card type, subtype, and/or supertype.
Layer 5: Color-changing effects are applied.
Layer 6: Ability-adding effects, ability-removing effects, and effects that say an object cant have an ability are applied.
Layer 7: Power- and/or toughness-changing effects are applied.

So Humility applies in layers 6 and 7. However, layer 7 is split into further sublayers (see? Humility is fun!)

Layer 7a: Effects from characteristic-defining abilities that define power and/or toughness are applied.
Layer 7b: Effects that set power and/or toughness to a specific number or value are applied. Effects that refer to the base power and/or toughness of a creature apply in this layer.
Layer 7c: Effects that modify power and/or toughness (but dont set power and/or toughness to a specific number or value) are applied.
Layer 7d: Power and/or toughness changes from counters are applied.
Layer 7e: Effects that switch a creatures power and toughness are applied. Such effects take the value of power and apply it to the creatures toughness, and take the value of toughness and apply it to the creatures power.

So Humility applies specifically in layers 6 and 7b. Anything that would apply in layers 7c-7e will apply after Humility, but if it's like Tarmogoyf, whose ability applies in 7a, then it will always be a 1/1. In fact, creatures with those kinds of abilities will lose them and their characteristics won't be able to be defined.

If you really want to make a judge have horrible flashbacks, ask them how Humility works with Opalescence.

Yeah StuBi and I got our six Standard tourneys ticked off and have now decided that we are only going to play Standard once every two weeks now, instead of three times a fortnight.

We were very dedicated Standard players but things are always the same now.

People wait until the pro tour, buy the winning decks, and then that's all you face off against.

AND there are no easy/effective answers to those decks in the format.

Since I've worked out how to build better EDH decks, and found a play group that suits us better, we're playing that format a lot more.

So I understand you gravitating towards Modern. I can't see myself ever playing that format as I like longer games.

deck:Here is my take on Zada and Mirrorwing.

Zada and Mirrorwing

I haven't taken a good look at it since Aether Revolt came out so there might be some better cards to substitute, while keeping to the same themes.

Smuggler's Copter is an example of a card that is good in a wide variety of decks.

AgentGreen I haven't actually played a tournament with 26 Lands, yet.

It's been a meta call. I usually play Control with 26 Lands because I can't afford to miss land drops.

This has become even more important facing a deck that plays Elder Deep-Fiend which taps my Lands.

I have also often found myself wishing I had land on Turn 3 or 4, which I didn't have.

I'll let you know how this goes at tournament.

March 20, 2017 10:45 p.m.

That's what I thought.

I'll tell you another thing that indicates Standard is in trouble at the moment.

Where did all the Planeswalkers go?

Apart from Saheeli Rai you don't see them on the field much at LGS level, these days.

I am still rocking Ob Nixilis Reignited and Sorin, Grim Nemesis but I can't remember the last time I saw Liliana, the Last Hope or Dovin Baan, which used to be everywhere.

Some people used to use Chandra, Torch of Defiance as well. Haven't seen her for ages.

The reason is, when you've got a 4/4 Flier hitting you on Turn 3, Planeswalkers aren't very effective.

I have played Control against both Copy Cat and Mardu Vehicles and they absolutely eat it alive.

Heart of Kiran being a Vehicle means that you can only use an Instant, or sac Land, to get rid of it.

You are limited to Fatal Push, Grasp of Darkness, Murder, To the Slaughter, Blighted Fen, or Anguished Unmaking. For To the Slaughter or Blighted Fen they can just choose the Crew member, then they get another one out next Main Phase.

That sounds like a lot of options, but you can only stuff so many of them into one deck.

Murder is usually too little, too late.

You can't snatch Heart of Kiran with either Harsh Scrutiny or Transgress the Mind.

Anguished Unmaking speeds up the count down, to aggro you out.

Another problem is Scrapheap Scrounger. You've got to Exile it with Declaration in Stone or Anguished Unmaking, or it will keep coming back.

Using Anguished Unmaking on a 3/2 Creature is GREAT for your Opponent. They usually have lots of other stuff they'd rather you not use it on.

There are so many low cost Creatures in Mardu Vehicles that you have a hard time removing them all.

By the time you can board wipe, it is Turn 4. Their Heart of Kiran won't be hit and they just need another Crew member to continue on their merry way.

Copy Cat players will make sure their Main and Sideboards contain enough Counter spells to match your removal.

That includes stuff like Spell Queller.

The timing has got to be just right to stop them comboing off.

You have to keep mana open from Turn 3 onwards, so you can clear away Saheeli Rai, and Felidar Guardian.

That stops you setting up your Win Cons.

Normally you would put Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet on the field around Turn 4. Now you can't, because you must leave mana open.

You usually don't get to play your Archangel Avacyn Flip and Sorin, Grim Nemesis unless your Opponent has an insanely bad draw.

In order to play them you have to have at least seven mana - five for Avacyn Flip and two for Grasp of Darkness, or eight mana to play Sorin and Grasp.

You can't really play Evolving Wilds to kill Felidar Guardian with Fatal Push, because you'd need a few copies for consistency, and that then slows down your mana base.

Slow mana is not good for a Control deck.

I'm sure people will look at this description and pick apart my card choices, and play style.

All I can tell you is that I have been playing Control successfully since SOI and it has never struggled like it has at the moment.

Control is not good against Aggro. Snek Deck outpaces it, too.

I would love to move on to Frontier, but there aren't enough people interested in it at my LGS.

Commander is what I have gravitated to. I can use some of my old cards that I used to love, and there are plenty of different playgroups around.

In fact I signed up for Standard tonight, dropped immediately, and played Commander.

Three people turned up to play Standard tonight. That was down from six last week.

Yeah the not pausing makes things tricky.

I always say "moving to combat" and wait for the other person to indicate whether they are going to do something or not, before I declare my attackers.

That has the added advantage of not allowing them to see what I am planning to attack with in the pre-combat phase.

If I move to declaring attackers and then they say "before combat" I point out to them that I already announced I was moving to combat, so their timeTo do anything precombat has passed.

March 15, 2017 7:59 a.m.

Calm your farm.

There's been no attitude or sassing whatsoever.

Unless you've read something into my comments that isn't actually there.

I didn't want to talk about building competitive decks at all. It has been assumed that I did.

March 14, 2017 4:37 p.m.

AgentGreen I don't wish to discuss this because, every time I do, people tell me what I should be playing.

I'm here to give my input to the OP, not to seek advice for myself.

A lot of people really can't understand why there are those of us that no longer enjoy Standard.

Besides the colour advantage you mentioned, Delerium was strong coming into AEther Revolt. Winding Constrictor just pushed it WAY over the top.

I think it was assumed that Heart of Kiran would be more difficult to Crew than Smuggler's Copter but nuh-uh, plenty of options abound in

Some people on Tappedout are saying that they have been able to build decks that match the Unholy Trinity.

I wonder what their meta is like and whether they consistently beat the Trinity.

I'm at the stage where I'm not even that interested in Amonkhet any longer.

I trusted that Wizards would balance things up a little bit for AER, but that turned out to be so wrong.

March 14, 2017 4:29 p.m.

Another thing that could have helped with the current Standard would have been the aforementioned Day of Judgment or another 4 drop card that gave -4/-4 to all Creatures aka Languish.

The -3/-3 from Yahenni's Expertise doesn't cut it against Winding Constrictor decks.

March 14, 2017 7:53 a.m.

You can do different win cons in Control such as the +1 for Sorin, Grim Nemesis, but that takes time to happen.

Time you don't get in a competitive meta.

If you meta is more casual you might get there.

March 14, 2017 7:49 a.m.

... and the meta, at least at my LGS, is wall-to-wall aggro decks at the moment.
