Argeaux Pyromancer

I love building decks! Playing them is a secondary joy.
I also enjoy pretty art, interesting and funny flavour text, and foil cards.
This game, and its mythology, fascinates me.

Most of the decks I have created here I own in physical form.

You were so right with Crackdown Construct. It's about a bazillion times better in a pure Izzet Control shell. I probably won't get to update the deck until late tonight, but just wanted to say thanks!

Following up on Factual ...

It's probably impossible to say when the tide is going to turn against Jori, as it's almost totally dependent on the other decks in your group. If Prossh, Skyraider of Kher keeps coming out to play, you're NEVER going to be Public Enemy #1. If Prossh gets shelved at some point though, who knows!

More likely though is that folks will gradually realize she's pretty BA, and she'll slowly move from Public Enemy #4 to #3 to #2. As that happens, you'll probably want to adjust the deck accordingly, giving her a little more early-game protection. But that probably means changing a couple cards here and there, rather than making wholesale changes. A good analogy is probably the changes folks make to a Standard deck over the season ... their sideboard changes almost every tournament, and maybe they even start "pre-boarding" against certain matchups. But the core of a deck is going to stay pretty constant.

I personally love playing non-threatening Commanders. Rith, the Awakener is that way ... she's this super-high CMC Dragon with an ability that doesn't seem great. But the deck can definitely win.

One more thing about the Bounce spells, just in case you haven't already noticed: They're super-effective for sending messages and playing politics, even if nobody else at the table is doing so. For example, say Player A attacked you early game and you couldn't respond at the time. Later, say you really want Player B to attack Player A instead of you ... it's pretty elegant to remind Player A of their mistake and then Bounce their key Creature during Player B's 1st Main. >:-)

BTW, I know you have a lot of pillow-fort in the deck already (that was part of why I suggested more) :-)

As always, draw well!

JIN, BOTG, and Theros have some of the best art and just downright killer bestow cards. I think the gods are awesome, but my favorite set has to be innistrad. Sadly I never got to be a part of it :(. Thanks for the add I'm going to add you as well.

Here's my take:

Runner Basker

It needs tweaking but it's a good start. Builds up very fast and can win without the two Creatures it is focused around.

Planar Bridge is too slow for the deck, in my testing. Plus you have to pay mana, whereas with Aetherworks Marvel the payment is with , which you have plenty of.

I get around 15 by Turn 5.

I'm sure it doesn't really matter how you look in Magic if you can kick arse.

I mean, just LOOK at some of the great unwashed who play Pro.

At the moment there are two women who play Magic at my LGS. Others have come and gone over the years.

Where I started playing (not where I play now) there we three of us. It does make a big difference to see people of your gender playing regularly.

From the article: "there shouldn't be as many decks playing Liliana, the Last Hope"

I just removed Gideon, Ally of Zendikar from my Sideboard for Lili, so I don't know about that.

I wish.

I did get to build a Mini Cube for my friend with some of the first release of cards. It's on my profile as Let's Start at the Very Beginning

I bought a couple of Eternal Masters boxes to build up my collection of Commander staples, and I'm getting into that format, so I am starting to learn about some of the earlier cards.

I began playing Magic with a friend to try to help him meet women. I now know what a stupid idea that was!

He got tired of it but I got hooked.

First ever deck I had was a 2014 Sample deck. That's my favourite colour.

Second deck I ever got was a 2014 Sample deck. That's my second favourite Magic colour!

How about you? How did you start playing?

I tried to get better at Magic as fast as I could.

I have an illness which means I am stuck at home most of the day.

I would say I spend between two and ten hours every day building decks and playing then against the top Pro decks and the top decks on this site.

I play Magic three times a fortnight at my LGS. We have a lot of international players as we are the biggest Magic shop in Sydney.

I think all of these things have helped with me learn Magic. I need to get into MTGO. People tell me I would be a much better player if I did that.

The pillow fort cards stop him killing me, that's for sure.

We have taken his Prossh in the past but he just kills it to get it back.

I started my hubby out with 30 card Sample decks, took things very slowly, and let him win a lot in the early days.

That gives them time to become familiar with some of the basic mechanics.

As they get better you can present them with more challenging game play by playing better. Then you can start building decks for them which slowly get more complicated.

Baby steps.

BTW how long did you think I'd been playing?

My partner and I were mucking around with the 2014 Sample decks tonight and we found that Red was so much stronger than Blue (those are the only two I have).

I have all the 2015 Sample decks, and used to play them with friends, and we thought that the Blue one was the weakest of them all.

We'd all been playing Magic for a couple of years and some of us had played a lot of Control.

Does anyone have any experience with these decks? If so, would you say that Blue was one of the weaker ones?

I've been playing Magic since Journey into Nyx.

I decided early on that I would never play a deck in Standard that I hadn't built myself.

That REALLY hurt in the early years.

It got better.

Being married as a Magic player is GREAT!!

You just have to make it work for you.

I slowly taught my partner how to play and now I always have a Magic partner.

Only problem is I build his decks and they are better than mine. I hate playing him at FNM.

I like the idea a LOT.

Inspiring Statuary may be of some use to get those big Creatures out faster.

Probably the biggest issue you are going to have is keeping all your Creatures on the field, as the strategy seems to rely on having a few out.

Do a rough build. I always find that I get the best idea of what to do to improve a deck if I actually play it.

I will say though, that if you build your deck correctly, you can Crew your Vehicles with only one Creature.

Or one land.

So that 6/5 I spoke about is getting Crewed by a two drop 3/2 Creature.

January 19, 2017 1:32 p.m.

Said on Crew be like ......

#16

I was having a discussion the other day about having to Crew Vehicles.

The other person was positing that having to Crew a Vehicle with more than one Creature was inefficient.

I played Vehicles all of last season and I learnt fairly quickly that, while you had to be able to do stuff with your other Creatures, and have at least one other Win Con, if you built your deck right it was often the Vehicles that garnered you the win.

Thinking about it some more, if you told a Green player in the past that they could tap two Elvish Mystics on Turn 3 in order to get a Flying 4/4 with Vigilance, they would probably consider that a good deal.

Even better if you said that the 4/4 had Haste.

In my scenario Inventor's Apprentice, Speedway Fanatic, Scrapheap Scrounger, or some of the cheaper Dwarves would be used in place of Elvis Mystic (thankyou very much).

I think a lot of issues that people have with Vehicles is that they haven't learnt the value of them, like they have with using mana dorks.

On Turn 5 I can deal 3 damage to a Creature/Planeswalker and the next turn, if I turn two of my other Creatures sideways ("tap" them), I get a Flying 6/5 that deals 3 damage to a Creature or Planeswalkers every time it attacks?

I'd call that value.

The biggest issue with Vehicles is losing your Crew members. With stuff like Scrapheap Scrounger, Wandering Fumarole, and/or Counter spells in the mix you can offset that.

Come at me.

We had people over tonight for a barbie followed by Commander with Planeschase.

It was fun to an extent, although I was a bit mana screwed in the early game and couldn't work out what to cast in the late game.

The game's finish was so dull. It was basically fifteen minutes of watching a Control player trying to combo out, while a Group Hug player tried to shut him down.

Who do you suppose won that race?

I think the Group Hug deck was probably not the best one to play as it just filled the Control player's hand full of cards.

Unfortunately we were also on a Plane which copied each of your Instants and Sorceries.

At least the food and the company was pleasant.

January 19, 2017 9 a.m.

Where do you stop, though?

Collected Company? Siege Rhino? Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip?

January 18, 2017 2:56 p.m.

Goblin Kaboomist is one of my favourite cards.

I have one signed by Aaron Forsythe.

You can offset it's randomness by pairing it with Stormrider Rig.
