Need a General Idea and an Idea for a General.

Commander (EDH) forum

Posted on Nov. 17, 2014, 3:47 p.m. by Human_Rogue_21

I'm looking to make a new EDH, but I don't have any ideas for Generals... I want to make an EDH with a theme to it and would prefer to stay away from a Mono-Colored deck.

If anyone would be kind enough to leave a comment suggesting a General and a theme for that deck, it would be greatly appreciated.

Any and all color combinations are fine!

Thanks!

kinda general, but ok:

Sharuum the Hegemon artifact deck

Oloro, Ageless Ascetic life gain/ life pay (via Hatred for commander damage)

any g-d in theros block fitting its ability (i.e. large creatures/ramp with xenag-d, weenies with heliod)

uhm...Avacyn, Angel of Hope for a nice white ramp/protection deck

Sliver Hivelord for slivers (or Sliver Queen or Sliver Legion or Sliver Overlord)

this is all i could do for now, but a lot of the legends from kamigawa could make good edh decks...

Scarecrow theme, Reaper King. Or Group Hug, Phelddagrif/Questing Phelddagrif. Or Squirrels, Rhys the Redeemed. Those are really all the ones I can think of off the top of my head, though.

A Savra, Queen of the Golgari sac attack deck. Use cards like Birthing Pod, Doomed Necromancer, Death's Presence, etc. to put stuff in your grave, with cards like Dictate of Erebos and Sheoldred, Whispering One as reanimator. Not as complicated as a three color, yet you have the variation with black kill spells, green tutor, and cards like Wurmcoil Engine to work with. Fun to play, and not infuriating to play against, thus still having people to play with.

That was swapped. dictate to put stuff into graveyards, necromancer to get it back.

Well, since I couldn't really see any pattern in the decks that you built, I'll recommend the ones I currently have built. Also another great place is going through MagicalHacker's decks, he has a lot of EDH decks built with different builds than usual.

Melek, Izzet Paragon lets you get lots of doubled spells. Extra turns + doubled fireballs can be pretty damaging.

Merieke Ri Berit gives you tons of control, letting you then push through your win condition with a clear board. Using Intruder Alarm means that they won't be able to use their creatures anymore.

The Mimeoplasm is a mill/reanimator deck. It also has the perfect colours for control and ramp.

Kaervek the Merciless punishes your opponents for playing spells. Think group slug, then add some stax to make you out damage them. Bonus points for Possibility Storm so you get the double cast triggers.

Zedruu the Greathearted can be wonderful for group hug or chaos or combo-control. I personally run a chaos deck that helps all other players, then locks down the board and forces them to run out of hand. Then I draw a Warp World or Scrambleverse and attempt to win with it. Normally I can force my opponents to concede after a couple hours.

Asher18 - Sharuum is one deck that i've been looking into, I do really like artifacts so it could be interesting.

JA14732 - Pheldagrif seems like it would be a lot of fun, as I love group hug strategies.

katarhero - I built a Savra deck last year and I remember how much fun it was so I will consider exploring that option again.

lemmingllama - Melek, Merieke, and Kaervek are all cool Generals, but I actually like the idea of Zedruu and Mimeoplasm best. The Mimeoplasm was the most intriguing of all the suggestions made, is there any cards that you would suggest specifically for that deck?

Thanks everyone for the awesome suggestions. Keep them coming!

Thanks for the shoutout, lemmingllama! OP, I can help you find a deck to build, but what do you mean by a theme? What theme do you want?

Human_Rogue_21 says... #9

@MagicalHacker - When I say theme, I just mean a main strategy that the deck will take. Whether it revolves around 1, 2, or any number of specific cards. For example, maybe for a Karador, Ghost Chieftain EDH I would build the deck around Birthing Pod. Or a tribal theme, like Vampires for Olivia Voldaren EDH. I am really open to suggestions and I would very much appreciate the help! Thank you.

@Human_Rogue_21 Zedruu is my most fun deck out of all of them, and the deck is super cheap to build too simply because it runs all the janky cards that no-one likes. If you want, check out my build Some Goats Want to Watch the World Burn

As for The Mimeoplasm, you need to decide if you want to win by milling your opponent or yourself. Still, there are some cards that I would put into any Mimeoplasm deck regardless of the idea. Consuming Aberration, Death's Shadow, Lord of Extinction, and Phyrexian Dreadnought are great creatures to add +1/+1 counters to your general. Fauna Shaman, Buried Alive, Jarad's Orders, Intuition, Entomb, and Survival of the Fittest all let you tutor for creatures and get them in the graveyard. Mesmeric Orb is a cheap and great way to slowly mill everyone. Also Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon is a great way to one shot your opponent. For other ideas, feel free to check out my deck that mills my opponents. Mimeoplasm, the Deck Eater

I have a Karador, Ghost Chieftain deck with a graveyard/sac combo theme and a superfriends subtheme. They go surprisingly well together. It is very fun, and very resilient.

Not a fan of mimeoplasm . Completely falls apart to any grave hate your opponents pack. I think a more flexible general like savra or jarrad that abuse the graveyard but don't need it to function are better. BUG is a great color combo for commander though.

@lemmingllama - You made a really compelling argument for Zedruu and after looking at the deck, i'm totally sold. Who doesn't love Goats, right? I really like all the cards in your list, but I will make changes based on the other decks I normally play against. Since you have been playing that deck for a while, I would love to run some ideas by you. What do you think of Jinxed Idol for extra fun/shenanigans? I also am thinking about cards like Dictate of Kruphix, Kami of the Crescent Moon, Howling Mine, etc, for more Group hug fun?

Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord is the best black/green commander. Sacrificing fatties.

My favorite Five color to play is Horde of Notions. Elemental Tribal.

If you find The Mimeoplasm intriguing, check out mine.

My favorite deck of all time. So much you can do with these colors. His art kicks much ass.

@Human_Rogue_21 I'm glad I found something that you enjoy. If you post your decklist on my profile once you finish, I'll be happy to give some CnC on it.

As for the cards, I find Jinxed Idol to be unimpressive. I have only once killed someone with damage, and that was because I stole their Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre and forced them to sacrifice all their permanents. Normally I win through them giving up, or mill.

Those other card draw cards are quite fun. They actually help win the game for you if you aim to let them run out of deck, and can put the pressure on if you force all their creatures/lands back to their hands using Noetic Scales or Storm Cauldron.

Anyways, if you want to ask about other cards then it might be better to post on my deck or writing lemmingllama on your decklist. Then we can keep the thread more focused on general ideas instead of card ideas.

Oh okay, each deck I build has some kind of theme for it, so that should be fine. What colors do you like and not like? What archetypes do you like and not like (aggro, midrange, control, combo)? What kinds of color combos do you like and not like? And lastly, what decks do you already have, so I can try to inspire you to build something different from your decks. :)

And by color combos, I'm asking if you prefer building or not building a deck that is monocolored, bicolored, tricolored, or pentacolored. Imo, it's best to have one of each of those four to round out your repertoire of decks.
