Noetic Scales is a great substitute for ensnaring bridge if your oppenents aren't going for combat damage

I'd love to know more what you see the lane of the deck to be. That would help provide more strategic recommendations. Looking at the list, I see a lot of 'good stuff' cards, but not always seeing how they all are intended to work together. That could just be me. There is the Laboratory Maniac and you do have a few ways to increase or multiple your draws...

While I'm not recommending specific ones of these cards, I see Damia, Sage of Stone and try to build around with cards that are impacted by the number of cards in your hand and building that number up. In my own build once upon a time, I aimed to draw more where I could and hold onto those cards. You have a Thought Vessel and Reliquary Tower, but also having a free Spellbook might be in order.

I see the snow-covered lands, but not much interaction with them. A Scrying Sheets or Sunstone seem in order.

There are many ways to be a little hand hate bear if you want. Noetic Scales can be fun in this way or Locust Miser. Narset, Parter of Veils plays in well to this too.

As far as cards in your hand interaction, I'll throw out a bunch, but with no particular synergy in mind aside from cards in hand. You might have enough green for Phosphorescent Feast. If your constantly overfilling your hand, Scroll Rack would give you some major filtering. Credit Voucher also does this, but isn't repeatable. Jushi Apprentice  Flip is one way you can overfill your hand in Damia. Sea Gate Restoration  Flip can come in as an untapped land, but if you are rolling in mana, it can fill that hand even more. You are also ramping really hard and just one of the draw X spells probably has a place here. There are, of course, a number of cards that have power/toughness equal to your cards in hand if you wanted to go that route. Ominous Seas is a card you'll trigger a lot in Damia.

No Cyclonic Rift? Some form of graveyard hate is probably warranted, even if just, especially dropping a swamp for Bojuka Bog. You've got 3 sorcery tutors, but I'd slot one out for Vampiric Tutor.

I've been thinking about rebuilding Damia myself as mill deck now that there is so much more support for it.

Hey LordKunai, thank you! I am happy to offer my opinion.

  1. Dismember is an excellent card in general, but I think I’m running enough removal for now.

  2. Darkness was in an earlier version of this build, but I found that I would rather have a discard spell then a stall spell that only lasts 1 turn. Plus I prefer using enchantments to lockdown creatures, or board wipes to remove multiple creatures at once.

  3. Liliana's Caress and Megrim are good options, but I chose to exclude them because I would rather run discard spells to reduce the opponent to 0 cards in hand. This seems counter-intuitive at first, but the goal of this build is to take advantage of Tinybones’ abilities, and Caress/Megrim do not promote that objective.

  4. Sudden Spoiling is interesting, I am not familiar with this card. However I would rather run Dismember or Bontu's Last Reckoning instead. I’d rather remove creatures than neutralize them.

  5. Torment of Hailfire is great when you have enough mana to win in a single turn. In other situations it ends up being a dead card. It was in an earlier version of this build that also ran Crypt Ghast and had a focus on ramping.

  6. In this latest version I avoid creatures (other than Dark Confidant) to focus on my primary objectives. Plus I’m running lots of board wipes and cards like Noetic Scales, and I don’t think the Ghast is cost effective if I play it for 4 mana, then only get a few turns of use out of it before it dies.

joeexotic on Do I decide what order …

I have Bottomless Pit, Noetic Scales, and Wheel of Torture all out at the same time. Each of them has a "during upkeep" trigger. Since I control the cards, do I get to decide what order they trigger for my opponent? So can I make sure that he discards a card first, then takes damage, and then returns creatures to his hand?

Thank you!

Same here RNR_Gaming, my group is very chill and we proxy whatever we like to make the most optimal decks. Also part of the fun for me is starting with a deck of proxies and slowly replacing them with real cards until I complete it!

abby315, thank you for commenting! Great points, I have taken your advice and made room for Noetic Scales and Asylum Visitor. I had missed the interaction between the Scales and opponent upkeep discard effects until you mentioned it! I like Plaguecrafter too, I’ll consider squeezing it in.

I’m glad you picked up No Mercy from my list, it is very effective.

My goal is to make this build as competitive and brutal as possible, so if you have any cEDH specific advice, I would love to hear it!

Aw, thanks for the shout-out! I like your build - if you have access to good tutors, it's definitely more streamlined to go the infinite-mana route. Since you need a good few pieces, though, I would definitely recommend Asylum Visitor as an additional draw engine (plus it's card advantage itself if you play it for Madness).

The other card I 100% recommend for competitive is Noetic Scales. It's a really potent and lopsided effect to keep the board clear and can help remove problematic threats by stacking the triggers so that they bounce a creature before a Bottomless Pit-type trigger.

Also, definitely stealing the idea of No Mercy, thanks! Can't believe I forgot about that card - I pulled an Invocation of it at an HOU draft and it was hilarious to see players try to deal with it in a limited environment. :)

How have I never seen Noetic Scales before?! If you don't build that deck, I will.

Trinket Mage is a slow but sure way to get out more The Racks. Ancient Stirrings either gets land or The Racks. In addition to the Nezumi, Storm World or Wheel of Torture as your noble work in multiplayer.

Sidisi, Undead Vizier is a tutor on a body, though honestly mono black is kind of rough to pull off as there's essentially a limited number of strategies to play out for just one color, cabal coffers and stronghold for ramp tutors for days and much boring day.

Though it's not mono black or strictly discard strategy, my Crosis, why you make him discard?! has some interesting ways to keep opponent's hands stocked and discard engines to run. Storm Cauldron Noetic Scales and Warped Devotion all make for discard fodder making engines you can run in a mono black deck. And if you like creature-less you can run Pithing Needle naming Lethal Vapors , Temporal Extortion is also a weird Time Walk
