Noetic Scales Discussion

Demarge on Mono-Black Discard

Sidisi, Undead Vizier is a tutor on a body, though honestly mono black is kind of rough to pull off as there's essentially a limited number of strategies to play out for just one color, cabal coffers and stronghold for ramp tutors for days and much boring day.

Though it's not mono black or strictly discard strategy, my Crosis, why you make him discard?! has some interesting ways to keep opponent's hands stocked and discard engines to run. Storm Cauldron Noetic Scales and Warped Devotion all make for discard fodder making engines you can run in a mono black deck. And if you like creature-less you can run Pithing Needle naming Lethal Vapors , Temporal Extortion is also a weird Time Walk

Wow, you have been very active, that's nice!

Slaughter the Strong is a great card and would fit perfectly in the deck, I'm thinking about it since it was in the spoilers for RXN and I have it already at home. I'm currently observing my playgroup if I should add it or not.

When I brew this deck I also stumbled upon Noetic Scales but since I mostly have 4+ cards in hand it won't do much for me. Same for Ensnaring Bridge .

Bant Charm is really great for a charm, but I think it is too hard to keep thre different mana symbols open into other player's turns. This limits us too much in playing stuff in our turn.

Karn Liberated like others said, too expensive mana and money wise and not supporting our deck directly. But it is a nice card :)

Aura Shards is awesome, espacially since enchantment decks are increasing lately. I'll se if I can get my hands on one.

Like HobbyGamer007 said, Wall of Deceit is a 2 drop 5/5. There aren't any better defenders mana/toughness wise, yet. We can simply ignore all it's other abilities.

Vlasiax

Dawn is the best part from Dusk . Like HobbyGamer007 said, it destroys our commander and there are better cards.

Silence look good at first, but you are only slowing an opponent down for a turn, where counterspells and removal spell let you react directly to a threat.

Why won't Fell the Mighty deal with little creatures or vampires? You should target one of your defenders with 0 strength.

I don't like supporting my opponents, that's why I don't run Wall of Shards . Same goes for Arcane Denial .

HobbyGamer007

I intentionally started this as a budget deck, so cards like Force of Will or fetch lands are not included. While I totally agree with you that they would make it better, I'm quite happy with the land base and rarely run into colour problems. But thanks for giving a good route! :D

Thing in the Ice  Flip could become very bad btw.! You should always watch your spells, because your opponents will :D Could be fun in certain situations and somehow manageable, but it can add a chaos factor I don't like.

Well, these are my opinions, thanks for suggesting so much cool stuff and always commenting on here. I really enjoy brewing this deck with you guys and I hope you are all successful with your decks!

Soon as this commander was spoiled I wanted to build him but unfortunately you have still beat me to him! Fog Bank was the card that got me into kitchen table magic many years ago. You should run Teferi's Protection I know its pricey but that is because it is good!

I also see you got a Meekstone . Ready to see a card you have never seen before? Noetic Scales . Enjoy!

This is pretty sweet! I was just thinking about a similar concept, but wanted to test Disinformation Campaign in it as well, and build around Surveil a bit. The truest bouncy house!

Have you considered running Sire Of Insanity in your list? At a hefty price point, Chains of Mephistopheles would also go wonderfully, pairing with Anvil of Bogardan for a hand-size lock that makes opponents permanently hell-bent if they get there!

I'm planning to run Bedlam Reveler and The Flame of Keld as additional ways of getting myself hell-bent or at 4 cards or less for Noetic Scales, and am tempted to play Ensnaring Bridge as well. Not really 100% sure yet on the exact slots, I've got piles of cards on the table that need to be trimmed to make the deck still lol

Nice deck, I will definitely be taking some inspiration from it!

Here’s a few ideas for you to kick around that would really add to the strong discard theme:

Nice to see a new player to EDH, if you ever have any questions just ask.

I have a few preliminary suggestions for you.

Taking advantage of the 0 power of your walls is a must here (so avoiding things that give your walls +1/+1 is advisable. Rather, go for effects like Stalwart Shield-Bearers instead).

Giving your walls vigilance (and other things) is a powerful thing to do from my experience.

I have a lot more to suggest, but I'll hold them unless you have specific ideas you are looking for. I also have my own Arcades deck that I have built that I would highly recommend looking at.

PartyJ thanks for the compliments!

I need to finish this primer, which should help clear up some of my card choices, in the mean time feel free to bounce any ideas you have off me.

I really wanted to keep a tribal Elves aspect to this deck, I get it's not the optimal way to run a Nath stax list but it's a flavor win and keeps my inner aggro player happy.

I also went with some non-traditional stax pieces like Noetic Scales and Damping Sphere, over the ones such as Cursed Totem or Tangle Wire.

Cursed Totem I found was shutting off my mana dorks and hurting me more than it was hurting my opponents. My meta is also extremely creature heavy so Noetic Scales pulls a lot of weight.

I'm at an odd inbetween area with this list, I want to find a hybrid between stax, combo and aggro but I'm not sure if that's possible.
