Lab Maniac (Oathbreaker)

Unknown Mono-Blue

Vodis

I've been trying to break the new "oathbreaker" format that folks have been talking about.

Oathbreaker: Jace, Wielder of Mysteries. Signature Spell: Paradigm Shift

The deck basically works like a Lab Maniac deck: Get either Jace or Lab Maniac on the field, get rid of your library, draw from an empty library, win.

Since Paradigm Shift is your signature spell, your main line of play is to empty your graveyard with Tormod's Crypt or a similar effect (or avoid filling it in the first place), cast Paradigm Shift, and draw off of Jace's plus ability or some other draw spell.

Your back-up plan consists of the ditch-your-deck package: Leveler, Thought Lash, and Mirror of Fate. Any of these can replace Paradigm Shift, and they work even if you don't have a way to empty your graveyard.

Bounce effects, counterspells, Fog Bank, and Propaganda obviously help you defend yourself while you set up your win.

Draw spells and Transmute effects help you find things you need, duh. Plus, you'll need a draw effect if you're trying to win with Lab Maniac instead of Jace. Muddle the Mixture finds all sorts of goodies, including ways of exiling your graveyard, and is a pretty solid counterspell in its own right, especially in a format with Signature Spells. Drift of Phantasms mostly finds Lab Maniac, but can get some other good stuff too, and having the option of just using it as a 0/5 flying blocker can be solid for building up your defenses. Tolaria West can get either Tormod's Crypt or one of your other utility lands.

Tezzeret mainly helps you find stuff to exile your graveyard with, but can ramp you by grabbing an artifact land and, if you've plussed him once, can find Leveler or Mirror of Fate, both of which are back-up enablers for Jace or Lab Maniac.

Spark Double gives you a bit of redundancy to back up Jace or Lab Maniac, but if you're lucky enough to have Tezzeret on the field already, you can copy him and immediately tutor out Leveler or Mirror of Fate since you'll have an extra loyalty counter.

Vedalken Aethermage is maybe too cute, but it tutors for Lab Maniac or Trinket Mage (which in turn tutors for ways of exiling your graveyard) and in a pinch it can flash in for an unexpected chump block, so it has some nice versatility. Plus, hey, maybe you'll even get to bounce a Sliver (or changeling) every once in a while.
