Ritual of the Returned

Instant

Exile target creature card from your graveyard. Put a black Zombie creature token onto the battlefield with power equal to the exiled card's power and it's toughness equal to the exiled card's toughness.

Never underestimate the power of Solidarity of Heroes with your massive hydras. It's one of the few non-creature spells I don't mind having multiples of in a starting hand for my hydra deck. I feel Springsage Ritual is too mana heavy for what it does. I would prefer Nature's Claim, Naturalize, Sundering Vitae or at least Natural End. I would drop a few creatures to include Deadly Recluse, it's a much stronger discouragement against attacking flyers than what you've got. Drop Ritual of the Returned, as the majority of your creature's stats are actually pretty low, and the best targets you have are just barely mana efficient to play that way, and won't keep the abilities that make the creatures useful. Also, Stab Wound, and all the cards currently in your sideboard are only useful for very long games, which I think gives this deck an identity crisis. In my experience, hydra decks work best by aiming to drop a quick-growing hydra as soon as possible and swing to kill with it in 2-3 turns tops, which your slow-grinding cards don't contribute towards. It's possible your deck can be effective as well, but try cutting the slow cards, including some quick mana ramp (GreenisGod's recommendation is fantastic) and increasing the proportion of hydras to ensure you have one when you need it. I'd expect your results will improve drastically.Lastly, it's very important to include creature protection for a deck that works around making massive creatures. I'm fond of Blossoming Defense, Alpha Authority, or Sheltering Word. Heroic Intervention can also be incredibly clutch.

Well, to be honest, from the looks of your deck now, I see more of a zombie tokens deck, splashed with removal. It's not a bad deck, actually. It's pretty fast, and can flood the board with 2/2s REAL quick. I feel like you could make a pretty good zombies deck. Blood Scrivener is a must if you're going to be emptying your hand relatively fast. So maybe 2 or 3 copies of him? Lifebane Zombie is good, but it fits better in the sideboard until you go against those green or white decks. Liliana's Reaver is a really good 4 drop, especially if your going for the zombie tokens. More copies of him would be good. Xathrid Necromancer is a really solid 3 drop. More copies of him. Keep maybe a 1 of Soul of Innistrad? A one of In Garruk's Wake. Then maybe a 3 of Ultimate Price and a 2 of Hero's Downfall? Use 2 copies of Empty the Pits. Then some reanimation spells like Ghoulcaller's Chant, Ritual of the Returned, and Fated Return. If you need any more help, just hit me up! I'm welcome to make suggestions.

Not a fan of Dreg Mangler and Deadbridge Goliath- I find them a little too high mana for my taste- have you looked at Dregscape Zombie, Rotting Rats, Viscera Dragger, Aspect of Mongoose, Troll Ascetic, Become Immense Bloodsoaked Champion, Corpse Connoisseur, Corpse Churn for a more aggressive build? Varolz, the Scar-Striped and Ritual of the Returned can be awesome combined with stuff like Leveler and Eater of Days or Hunted Horror. Just some thoughts really.

First up, brain pry and essence harvest. They're pretty costly mana-wise for what they do. I'd shout out a set of duress and Blackmail or Go for the Throat,Victim of Night, Dismember. Competitive Modern is an interesting format. Your opponent will do whatever it takes to take you out of the game turn 3/4. that is when the game is decided, you'll notice you don't see many modern decks playing 4 drops unless they utterly change the game when they hit the board, so you'll want some more drawback creatures with lower costs to help hold out, more instant speed removal to deal with the threats your opponent will put out. You may wish to abuse cards like Tidehollow Sculler with sundial of the infinite, though this requires some stack knowledge. Ratchet Bombs. Trust me, you play it, it kills all tokens, or can be cranked up to deal with bigger encahntmens you otherwise can't deal. A must have for mono black, unless you're running other answers like Bile Blight. The card I was surprised not to see was Heartless Summoning- a t3 5 drop is a considerable improvement on the current mix. You will need other ways to utilise Eater of Days and Leveler- i'd reccomend Ritual of the Returned in concert with Call the Bloodline for some small tribal lifelinkers, to filter less useful cards from your hand, and instant speed 10/10s from leveler. In mono black Phyrexian Arena is an insanely strong draw engine, letting you just play more cards. Sometimes, with this kind of deck its worth running Lightning Greaves or Swiftfoot Boots to bypass the 'I need to survive three consecutive opposing turns' from eater of days

Secondly- sideboard. You want stuff that changes the way your deck functions so you can work around the other decks you'll play with. Some Disfigure for decks with small creatures, some Duress for superfriends, some smaller creatures for aggro, sometimes some Languish for swarms.the best way to check how your deck works though, is to hit the playtest button, open up someone else's modern deck and see how it works, then steal the bits you like or add things to predate on them.
