On removal

shirtninja, 10 years ago

With Scavenging Ooze so prominent in the format now, I have to add some removal to the main deck. In the current setup this shouldn't be terribly difficult, but once I get the finalized layout this may prove a bit more difficult.

Update

Pureguns, 10 years ago

So I went 2-2 at the last FNM on the 9th. I think I found a big problem with my deck.... I need Draw Cards. So if I can get my hands on a couple of Sphinx's Revelations I'll put those in. Maybe add a couple of Think Twice. My deck has pretty much stayed the same other wise.

This deck may seemed quite concept-confused, but it's played very very well for me in the past and is flexible enough to deal with several different kinds of decks without a sideboard. Please feel free to give input on this deck.

I have gone back and forth with adding black to this deck for the obvious amount of deathtouch creatures it offers, as well as some nice destroy cards. But I think this will operate a little smoother.

Changed a few things around

Changed some things about this deck

hochmaster, 10 years ago

I feel bad, but I had to remove Loxodon Smiter Completely from this deck, for the fact that I had no removal other than Selesnya Charm, so I added in some Banisher Priests for good, unconditional removal. Added some jedi knights for the fact that they can be pumped and are really hard to remove.

Decided to switch out Plasm Capture for Slaughter Games, this will allow us to be proactive instead of reactive when it comes to dealing with control and unusual decks.

Thinking of switching Fiendslayer Paladin out with Lifebane Zombie. and i've been thinking about Bogbrew Witch so i can fetch my Festering Newt and Bubbling Cauldron, The diabolic tutor might be a good idea, to insure that you get your Sanguine Bond but then i would have to remove 3-4 other cards and don't know if my deck can handle that

Hey there fellow deckers. So I tested this out against a friend and this deck had about 80% win rate. I found the elite arcanists were my main source of aggravation for my opponent(s). Also, the birds that let you pay [1] less to summon saw my 2 drops with self buffing become a relative instant threat. The only issue I had is the game ended around turn 12/14 when I've attacked my opponent for two damage for the 10th time. Is there some kind of combo that might jive with this deck? Some sort of finisher? I wanted to try and keep it 'merica and birds ... thoughts?

Korpsicus, 10 years ago

Finally got to put my deck to the test :D finished 5th overall out of 14 players round 1 : 2-0 victory, my opponent was using U/W enchantment control based sort of deck >.>" lots of pacifisms and arrests, and some enchantments to buff his own creatures. round 2: 2-0 victory, my opponent was using a mono white combo? Deck champions of parish, gather the townsfolk, and cathars crusade to name a few, got somewhat lucky, first game they were mana screwed, which gave me time to build up, and second game had the luckiest top deck, being a barter in blood to get rid of a fiendslayer paladin when I was down to 2 life :s Round 3: 1-2 loss, jund deck, I won the first game without a problem, second game stuck with a bad hand and got duressed removing the only playable spell I had :p and then never drew a blue land till the turn of my doom xD, 3rd game I got mana swamped and stopped drawing kill spells :( Round 4: 0-2 loss, 1st game, R/G aggro, I managed to get bolas out but he was quickly despatched, and I didn't draw anything else to help me kill creatures :s, 2nd game I flooded again :/ so some bad shuffling on my part it would seem :p Recent changes to the deck, ditched the soul ransoms, for tribute to hunger, more creature killing plus a little life gain added the crypt incursions for more life gain ;D Side board added in syncopate against aggro,

Testing Gather the Townsfolk and Silver-Inlaid Dagger

iamsolitary, 10 years ago

Ok, few more updates:

Tried Quicken (thinking end of their turn Quicken + Mind Grind) but I never used it for anything other than to cycle. That's nice but w/ 4 Think Twice and 4 Thought Scour it's probably not needed.

1 more Nephalia's Drownyard- needed 1 more land (at least). Going to try this out but I might dump it for an island.

Moved 1 Crypt Incusion to the main deck. Hopefully will help against aggro. Not too sure if it will help though.

Added 2 Duress - in place of Quicken

Still have a spot in the sideboard. Might try adding Cyclonic Rift somewhere to help if things get out of control. Not sure where it will go.

Standard Tournament at the Game Academy 8/14/13

mrbloo1848, 10 years ago

So I found out about this standard tournament that my LGS has just started doing so I decided to take my new, untested version of the Black Berets for a spin, with awesome results! I ended up 3-1 out of 4 rounds and in 3rd place our of 9 participants, which put me in the money (due to the small number, the tournament cuts to top 4 after Swiss rounds). I have to say that I really enjoy the new version a lot better since it brings me back to my familiar strategy of playing a small number of powerful cards while running a bunch of support cards that help those big cards get there. For an untested deck, this was a pretty good "debut" night!

R1: Boros Aggro (W 2-1)

An RDW with a decent white splash for some good white and boros cards. Won game 1 after an alpha strike with Obzedat, Ghost Council, Blood Baron of Vizkopa, and Lifebane Zombie unblocked thanks to Brave the Elements. Lost game 2 to a swarm to my lack of removals. Game 3 got me at a dangerous 4 life but came back with Blood Baron of Vizkopa paired with Slayers' Stronghold to put me out of reach of his attackers, which included Thundermaw Hellkite.

R2: Monowhite Humans (W 2-1)

A monowhite humans deck that splashes red for Slayers' Stronghold and Boros Charms and Burning Earth (as far as I know). Won game 1 in a devastating fashion thanks to Blood Baron of Vizkopa who he had no way to deal with (He did become a 10/10 flyer before getting in the last turn). Mulliganned to 5 in game 2 and died quite miserably to Burning Earth after not hitting my lands while taking damage every turn tapping them to deal with his threats. Outraced his Burning Earth in game 3 when he started drawing dead after a few creatures which I promptly removed.

R3: Azorius Control (L 0-2)

Yep. This deck does not do well at all against this specific color combination control (it does just fine against American and Esper). He just runs so many counterspells which slowly grind my hand away while Snapcaster Mages recycle them for another run at my cards. Ran into complete lockdown both games, didn't even draw any of my sideboard cards :(

R4: American Flash (W 2-0)

Yep. Like I said, I do just fine against this color combo, just not Azorius. Ended a long game 1 when he was at 2 life and I played Searing Spear in response to him tapping out to cast Sphinx's Revelation at the end of my turn. Game 2 ran quite smoothly in terms of sideboarding. I decided to play T2 Rest in Peace to draw his Detention Sphere, which he bit hook, line, and sinker. I then freely resolved Boros Reckoner on turn 3 and got to swing in for about 3 times. At this point, I already know he's holding a Dissipate and Supreme Verdict in his hand thanks to Sin Collector. I was holding two Obzedat, Ghost Councils and a Boros Charm in my hand and I really could not afford tapping 5 mana to have it countered. Therefore, I held on to them while swinging in with the lone Boros Reckoner until he was at 9 life and decided it was enough and had to cast Supreme Verdict on him. I know I need to force his counterspell (he had 3 mana untapped) so I casted my Boros Charm, which he then took the bait and was forced to counter the charm. At this point it was a two-for-two trade which was, in the card advantage standpoint, perfect for me since he had to tap out. I then freely resolved my Obzedat, Ghost Council the next turn, to which he had no counter to. The first EOT effect brought him to 7, then 5 the next turn, and then 3 the next turn (he had mana open so I didn't want to attack into him to risk getting Azorius Charm'd). Then he casted his Lightning Helix in his hand (no more cards in hand at this point) to help him stay alive before combat, which put him at 2. I then just resolved my second Obzedat, Ghost Council to seal the win. It was the best possible play sequence I could do to make sure he can't come back.

This got me in the 3rd place, then the Top 4 all elected to split the pool.

Once again, I am LOVING the new version! It is so much more dynamic especially in control matchups!

Thanks for reading, guys!

Major Update #2!

mrbloo1848, 10 years ago

Hi guys! so before I go over the tournament, I would like to put the big update in here. Basically, my goal was to shift the curve down while going back to the roots of a traditional midrange deck style of running some powerful creatures and a bunch of support cards that help them do their jobs. Without much further ado, here are the details:

-3 Lingering Souls - Since I now mainboard more kill spells, I want to go balls deep on graveyard hate and not have to worry about using this card while still being able to survive weenies.

-2 Sorin, Lord of Innistrad - This goes out with Lingering Souls

-1 Tragic Slip - Again, out with Lingering Souls

-2 Olivia Voldaren - I understand how good she is, but my control-heavy meta isn't very friendly to her and she usually ends up being a liability than an asset.

-1 Angel of Serenity - Costs too much to run without proper acceleration.

-2 Thundermaw Hellkite - This goes out in favor of other creatures that are just as powerful while also being affected by Brave the Elements

-3 Pillar of Flame - Moved to sideboard

+3 Brave the Elements - The new card that I want to run a good part of the deck "around". It's very very powerful and I want to see how well it contends.

+2 Sin Collector - Moved to mainboard. He's good enough in my meta to be able to hit something most of the time.

+2 Blood Baron of Vizkopa - This guy is way too powerful to not run a full set in this deck. Now that I run, Brave the Elements and Boros Charm, he is near unstoppable.

+1 Obzedat, Ghost Council - one more for consistency.

+2 Doom Blade - moved to mainboard

+1 Aurelia, the Warleader - One more for consistency

+1 Boros Reckoner - More for consistency. Most of the added creatures benefit from Brave the Elements

+2 Searing Spear - Gives my deck more outs.

Sideboard

Other than the main-side swaps above, changes are the following (so the numbers don't match up since I am not going to mention the swaps above again):

-1 Rakdos's Return - I think I can live without this thing. I think I mainboard enough hand removals to still be ok against midrange decks that this card usually comes in against. Another reason being to add the card below:

+1 Wear / Tear - This deck has a glaring weakness to enchantment-based removals like Detention Sphere, Oblivion Ring and Witchbane Orb also makes a lot of the cards not work. This deck also has a very very hard time against Burning Earth so this addition is to help address these issues.

+3 Boros Charm - I finally am getting around to trying this bad boy out. It works great against control decks that rely on Supreme Verdict and other decks that rely on things like Bonfire of the Damned to clear the way for their other spells. It also gives me an instant-speed way of dealing with most planeswalkers.

That is all for the new big update! Thanks for following! Comments up to now will be stored here.
