#5 Commander deck! 340 votes! EMN Update! —July 26, 2016

Lets start with ... ELDRITCH MOON CHANGES!!!

These changes are pretty straight forward, but if you want more into, please refer to the Change Log in the Primer! =)

Now for the honorable mentions from EMN!

Ulvenwald Observer - He almost made the list... I just don't know what is worth cutting. I think I am good on draw with adding Tireless Tracker this update, but I know where to go if I think I need more!

Eldritch Evolution - This card is only good every once in a blue moon in this deck. Don't get me wrong, it will be a green EDH staple, but just not is token builds... maybe if I had a few more 2 drops...

Decimator of the Provinces - Kinda a cool card, but just not good enough for EDH if you ask me. A really bad Craterhoof Behemoth.

Ulrich of the Krallenhorde  Flip - Shout-out to the newest Gruul Commander!!! What-what?!

Glad to see the update out!

I guess I didn't read the Hyrda right. Thought it was only a basic land. Seems better now that it's any land.

I will probably trade out Traverse for this then.

Of all the SOI cards the one I've been having the best luck with by far has been one I completely overlooked the first pass through the set and that's the Tireless Tracker. Last time I played Burgeoning turn 1, Tireless Tracker turn 2 along with my Ghost Town and I was pretty much able to sacrifice a clue a turn from that point on. It was especially helpful because in my hand I had a Stalking Vengeance, Rampaging Baloths, Craterhoof Behemoth, Greenwarden of Murasa, and eventually a World Breaker. For whatever reason all my big creatures were at the top of my deck even after shuffling a couple times with a Windswept Heath, and again with it after a Titania, Protector of Argoth and then a Myriad Landscape it was taking a while for me do things due to what I kept drawing, and often I would have a land or 2 remaining untapped when i passed the turn i would then return Ghost Town to my hand then play it again with the Burgeoning effect and sac a clue. It was incredible and with out it I was dead in the water drawing all those 6+ cost creatures. The card draw drew me a couple lands as well as into a Verdant Confluence which got me fully into the game, again returning the Heath to my hand and taking and putting 2 basics on to the battleground. Obviously this was pretty ideal situation for the tracker but in other games I got him out he's performed really strongly as well.In 1 other game I had him out with my Parallel Lives so i was getting double the clue tokens to sac.Nobody at the table wanted to use a removal spell on him due to the strength of other creatures in my/others decks or on the battlefield at the time. I also had him out with my Asceticism so at that point he was effectively a green Erebos, God of the Dead, without the requirement of paying life to draw. He also got really big with all the saccing of clues.Traverse the Ulvenwald has also been pretty decent, it got delirious once and that was awesome, other than that I got an extra land from it.Ulvenwald Hydra hasn't been that great for me and considering the already high avg cmc in the deck it might get the axes.

garrettlstewart: Tireless Tracker might not be such a bad idea. Definitely would generate a lot of Clue tokens and give us some early card draw. Might have to test it out.

And thanks for the shout out, VexenX!

garrettlstewart: I guess I might not of given Tireless Tracker enough credit. I just didn't like the idea of having to pay for my card draw when I got free cards off Elemental Bond, and I could just play Kavu Lair or Garruk's Packleader if I wanted to.. it is something to think about though.

Guerte: It took a little longer to get this update out. I was just not sure how I wanted to proceed, plus school/work has been pretty nuts. I am glad you like the changes, and the shout out lol

The thing I like about the Tireless Tracker is that it's an alternate method of getting card draw, in addition to it being an opportunity at early card draw. If Omnath gets countered the first time it's cast then is hit by some removal the second time (which often happens in my playgroups) and you're not able to get from 7 to 9 mana sources or from 9 to 11 that next turn I can draw and draw and draw. Even at 2 mana a card, if I can easily end up with 4-5 extra cards by the time I'm able to get a board presence with Omnath. Plus I can use all the help I can get since there's a lot more aggro decks all the sudden Relentless Rats/ Marrow-Gnawer, Krenko, Mob Boss, and Zada, Hedron Grinder.

Hey dude, amazing deck. Almost identical to my Omnath! May I suggest adding Gratuitous Violence to the mix. Think of the DAMAGE count!!!

Imagine you have Purphoros, God of the Forge, Gratuitous Violence, Stalking Vengeance, Omnath, Locus of Rage, and a sac outlet (I've actually pulled this off once and it was glorious!)....land comes into play, Purphoros and Gratuitous triggers immediately dealing 4 damage, then sac the elemental to trigger Stalking Vengeance's 5 damage x2 (thanks to Gratuitous), and Omnath's bolt trigger x2 (also thanks to Gratuitous)..... so.... that's 20 damage per elemental.... bonkers!

Also, I would consider taking out Goblin Bombardment and replace it with Phyrexian Altar. Yes, maybe that 1 extra damage could make a difference, but I think the value is higher with having access to more mana, and colored mana at that!

VexenX : I'm not happy with the Hydra addition or the fact that my name isn't in the credits. end dramatic section here

While Ulvenwald Hydra is able to bring any land, triggering landfall more than once for sure. I feel like the fact that it provides a potentially HUGE body doesn't change the fact that for this build, it only acts as an overpriced ramp spell. Maybe Tireless Tracker and the card draw it provides could be more useful. I'll have to try this next month and let you know how it goes.

Also, I've finally gotten my hands on Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Crucible of Worlds and managed to order everything else my deck is missing too! So I'll finally be able to provide more information. :D

TehPudding I was skeptical about Ulvenwald Hydra at first, but he has turned out amazingly well. Being able to grab Yavimaya Hollow, Cavern of Souls, or Boseiju, Who Shelters All while coming in at least 6/6 is incredible. He is also a big enough threat that he has to be answered and forcing people to spend their removal on another creature takes allot of the heat off of omnath, which can be game changing. Also, another reach creature is nothing to complain about in a deck that has trouble dealing with flying.

garrettlstewart: I am going to get a copy of Tireless Tracker and give it a shot. I understand that it is better then other drawing options because you don't require Omnath, Locus of Rage to be in play for him to work.

Scubasteve95: I don't know why Gratuitous Violence has not come up yet!!! It seems flat out amazing! It does not just give all my creatures (slightly worse) double strike, but it double all of Om_raths bolts! Seems pretty great to me, but now I just need to find room... Phyrexian Altar seems like a find card, but not better then Goblin Bombardment, if you ask me. I am not against using it, but it is the whole find room problem again.

TehPudding: I sorry! When I added the shout-outs I just looks at those that gave input on the SOI changes specifically. I make sure to get you next time!!!

Because of work and school, I was not able to play this weak, so I don't have much to say about Ulvenwald Hydra yet. I think this card has gotten the most two-sided reviews then any other card at this point. I think it goes down to trying it out in order to really see if it is good or not. Those that have tried it said it is great (like Thrasymachus0). I don't think I can rule it out tell I really give it a chance, and I would recommend the same to you. It is however on the chopping block... that spot in the deck is HIGHLY coveted! Tireless Tracker, Phyrexian Altar, Gratuitous Violence, Asceticism... why can't EDH just be 150 cards?! lol

Maybe cutting Eldrazi Monument and Verdant Confluence, and maybe Greenwarden of Murasa?????????

I was hoping to pick up a Tireless Tracker from my LGS, but apparently everyone and their mothers are looking for them.

April 22, 2016 2:28 p.m.

VexenX says... #12

Guerte: I understand that it is standard playable, but do you really think it has long term EDH potential? Mind's Eye draws more cards most of the time, and I wouldn't run it, am I just missing something about Tireless Tracker?

April 22, 2016 2:37 p.m.

Guerte says... #13

VexenX: I don't think you're really missing something. I think the appeal is getting a bunch of Clue tokens that you can sacrifice at any time to be able to draw. Then, you also can potentially have a big beater for only 3 mana. It may just take some heat away from Omnath. Can't hurt to try it out for yourself and see if it's something you like.

April 22, 2016 3:53 p.m.

VexenX says... #14

Guerte: Well, seems like you have a point. I'm out numbered at this point lol. I'll put in the order for three new foil cards Tireless Tracker, Gratuitous Violence, Praetor's Counsel... not sure what is coming out for the two new ones though...

New debate!!!

Eldrazi Monument or Asceticism??? lol

April 22, 2016 5:08 p.m.

Thrasymachus0 says... #15

Eldrazi Monument gets my vote, but maybe that's because I see allot of Damnation in my playgroup. The only advantage to Asceticism is that you can play it without anything on the board. However, it does not function as a quasi win condition, is still vulnerable to mass clears, and doesn't help with blocking or flyers. I was running Asceticism for awhile, but I was never that happy to see it. That being said Eldrazi Monument is approaching the chopping block in my own list, I don't attack enough to really use it and I feel like I'd rather have another draw spell, sac outlet, or win condition. I will also take this time to vouch for Phyrexian Altar having a sixth sac outlet is great since they draw the most hate in my playgroup and the mana fixing is helpful. I'll start playtesting Gratuitous Violence, it wasn't great in my original build, but I didn't have the same emphasis on sacking that I do now. Tireless Tracker is coming in from puca and I'll start playing him as soon as I get him. Horn of Greed is a great draw option as well I only took it out because there is another landfall deck in my playgroup.

Also brief shout out to Second Harvest it's won me a few games from playing in response to board wipes and right before my turn to get more attackers. I'm never sad to see it, but I think its worth playtesting.

April 22, 2016 5:57 p.m.

Orcish Lumberjack for the occasional turn 3 Omnath?

April 23, 2016 10:55 p.m.

TehPudding says... #18

Both Eldrazi Monument and Asceticism have proved to be useful to me before. Since you mentioned that sacrificing was your focus now, I'd go with Asceticism, since it saves Nomnath from exiles and bounces as well. :D

I just came back from a three player game. Tireless Tracker was absolutely incredible. Our last game I sacrificed 12 of 25 clue tokens and swung for the win.

VexenX says... #20

Thrasymachus0: I have a foil Tireless Tracker and Gratuitous Violence on the way.. I think I might be taking out Praetor's Counsel... Only because I am not completly attached to it yet.. And I don't know what else to remove... I am not sure want else I am removing yet though...

It comes down to if Second Harvest is really worth a spot, of is it just an exciting new card? The same thing might go for Ulvenwald Hydra.. Not sure yet...

NotSquishedYet: Orcish Lumberjack: is an interesting card.. I just don't think I could make room for it in my build though, I wouldn't rule it out completly though.

Thank you everyone for the upvotes!!! We are now the #6 rated Commander deck on Tappedout!!! Just 30-40 more votes to be in the top 5!... lol

VexenX: Just the other day we were tied. Now you've jumped up 10+ times. How in the world do you do that?! Lol. I'm pretty jealous.

VexenX says... #23

Guerte: I told some people at my LGS about my list and they voted for me, lol. Plus I got quite a few votes from random supporters the last couple days. We are still pretty close, just 12 apart I think.

You got form 10 votes to 250 in a couple months! That was truly amazing! I'm not surprised at all though, I run a similer (cheaper) version of your deck, and it does amazing! I built Daretti when it first came out too. It is good to see decks that I like doing so well! I have 3 other decks that are in the top 25 (Scion/dragons, Gods/superfriends, Fungus).

April 27, 2016 12:39 a.m.

Guerte says... #24

VexenX: Fair enough. I tried that with my LGS and there's really not that many people, but I did what I could. Lol.

What are your thoughts on Mana Crypt/Mana Vault? More cheap rocks to help fuel our bigger spells earlier?

April 28, 2016 12:34 p.m.

VexenX says... #25

Guerte: Mana Crypt/Mana Vault are both valid cards, but I think I will stick to land ramp, mainly because they keep their value no matter when you play them because of Omnath, Locus of Rage.

I want to share a game I played this last week!!!

Turn 1: I had an opening hand with Burgeoning and 6 lands (one of which was Wooded Foothills. I thought it was kind of funny, so I kept it to see what happens, lol. I drew Crucible of Worlds as my first card, then played a land, then Burgeoning. I was playing a 5 player game, so I had 5 lands in play before my 2nd turn started.

Turn 2: Then on my turn I drew Azusa, Lost but Seeking. I played both her and Crucible of Worlds, which allowed me to fetch two more lands with Wooded Foothills... giving me 8 land on turn two! :). At this point everyone was pretty amazed lol.

Turn 3: So on my next turn I topped decked Greater Good, and everyone scooped... lol.. I would of cast Omnath, then fetched three times, then cast Greater Good, then drawing cards and Lightning Bolting as much as I wanted, lol. It was not necessarily GG at the time, but it was just a matter of time.

It was a pretty cool game... but I gave the deck a break after that because everyone seemed extremely afraid lol
