Maybeboard

Oppressive mid range power or Jund with the disgusting synergy of MH3's buried alive with 4 arclight phoenix.

Note this is a budget competitive deck. Don't expect to win much because there's so much gy hate in the meta and sideboard.

This is the deck I personally own and toy with. As much as I hate how modern horizons ruined the creativity formerly in modern, MH3 finally made modern affordable. The nonland core of this deck is around $60 and its support is around $30.

The superb hand goes like this:

  1. Land. Thoughtseize
  2. Land. Desperate/pyretic ritual, Manamorphose getting 2 black mana, cast Buried Alive.
  3. Bury alive 3 Arclight Phoenix.
  4. Move to combat. Attack for 9 damage. T2.
  5. Move to turn 3. with the prevelance of fetchlands in the format, another attack should end the game.

Otherwise, profane tutor, and the usual jund midrange staples will help secure the game to get a win.

I opted NOT to run the t2 win version. That version either wins by t3 or loses in my opinion as hands get clunky.

tips

  • Mulligan hard until you get a win line: profane tutor or buried alive or dark confidant hands are all worth keeping.
  • white control is the nightmare. Exiling the phoenixes is the most effective way to remove them. Side in a boardwipe against these.

2025 slick shot edit

The addition of Slickshot Show-Off has enabled a lot more damage and consistency, and even a t3 win.

A few t3 wins went as follows:

  1. nothing / thoughtseize
  2. profane tutor/ slick shot. 1 damage.
  3. 3 instant/sorceries, including one buried alive (e.g. manamorphose, profane tutor) = 3 arclight phoenix= 9 damage. 3 slickshot triggers makes 7 damage. Total 16 damage. If including around 4 life lost to fetchlanda and a shockland, that is 20 damage.

2025 burn addition

The problem with buried alive phoenix is inconsistency due to gy hate and hand attacks.

I added a small burn engine to supplement it. The usual June engine of goyfs does not help it.
