Anti-Control Update

ryanmeadus, 11 years ago

Went 2-2 at a local Standard tournament,

Round 1: 2-1 White Weenies - my loss was a stupid mistake, completely undervalued Brimaz, King of Oreskos

Round 2: 0-2 Black Devotion - Undervalued Pack Rat and it ended up getting too big to handle, even had a Magma Jet for it but didn't use it while i could.

Round 3: 0-2 Creature-less U/W control - Had them down to 6 life, 3 Boros Reckoners on the board, Fanatic of Mogis in my hand for next turn. Opponent used [Detention sphere] locked them down on me. had no removal so he got Elspeth, Sun's Champion out and tokened me to death.

Round 4: 2-0 Black Control - 5 Turn win followed by a 6 turn win.

UPDATE: Added a splashed green Sideboard to deal with U/W a bit better. Made Mainboard a little more agressive

Also added a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx

First time GO

So to start i took a fairly standard blue devotion deck and change only a few things.

First off Nullify love the removal that for 2 i can get rid of anything :D seems great to me

Second Jace, Memory Adept I like that he is more ... scary?... to me then Jace, Architect of Thought plus i like the idea that i could POTENTIALLY mill somone out... mot likely... plus memory adept is cheaper >.<

So what do you all think/ what can i add to make it more my own then just the same thing everyone else is doing?

No more Deathrite Shaman... :(

So with the banning of DRS in Modern we've had to adapt a bit. Satyr Firedancer seems to have potential, so I'm giving it a run.

This is turning into a Delver burn deck...not a bad thing I guess but I used to be firmly in the "Damn Delvers" camp. I guess you grow with the times...

This deck is crazy fun to pilot in theory, but so vulnerable to removal/land destruction and counters/discard disruption that outside of kitchen table magic and casual play it would fall flat every time.

Im an idiot...

I was looking at the list and I was thinking, there's something missing. Well, I thought harder and realized that two of the largest staples were not listed: Hero's Downfall and Thoughtseize. We are going to add it, what to take out?

My record in the Swiss rounds was 3-1-1, and I lost in the first round of top 8 to place 8th of 30 players. Two of my wins were against W/U Control, which is a very favorable matchup for this deck. By the time the opponent is really ready to get rolling, my hand is full of cards and I’m only a handful of turns away from winning. My other win and my loss in the Swiss were against Mono Black Devotion. The difficulty of that match depends heavily on whether I get the right kind of removal against Pack Rat and how many Gray Merchants my opponent sees. My final loss was against R/G Aggro, knocking me out of the top 8. Pretty much every non-land card in that deck is an efficient and/or resilient threat, making it extremely difficult to keep up if I draw either not enough removal or too many 1-for-1 removal spells. My draw was an ID into top 8, with an opponent who I’m pretty sure was playing W/U Control. He wasn’t able to escape his fate, however, as he was knocked out in the first round of the top 8 by another Maze’s End deck. The revisions to the deck over the previous version really changed the feel and the essential character, and I find so many fewer frustrating moments during the course of an average game. I haven’t gotten bored with it yet, and hopefully things will stay that way for a while.

For now Fabled Hero will stand in for Brimoz until i can afford him, strictly speaking fabled hero is more powerful, but brimoz synergizes better with the spear and eidolon of countles battles. Sideboard will change as i see how our local meta develops but for now, this deck seems pretty solid, i'll let yall know how it tests.

Quick! Someone, take my debit card away! I make changes to this deck like mad, and every time I do I am "completely satisfied" with it. This time I dropped an island (I tend to produce more than enough mana) for another targeted removal! An extremely good one if you ask me: Spin into Myth. That will show my opponent's commander, how dare he exist! Oh, and I also now have a Lightning Greaves, which is great because I can donate this swiftfoot boots to my other deck League of Extraordinary Entlemen.

Just got a bunch of cards from the new set, really happy with how this deck has turned out

Use of Green

CurdBrosBrewingCo, 11 years ago

While it doesn't look like the Green is important to this deck; it is for two reasons:

  1. Simic Charm

Having the ability to choose it's function is a big deal. I used to play Vines to Vastwood for the protection reasons I play Simic Charm; however often times I would have either one or more Vapor Snag and/or Vines of Vastwood that I could not use. It drove me crazy. Having the choice is such a huge deal to tailor each game and/or interaction to my needs at th time.

  1. Raging Ravine

As you know from my Grixis Rise/Fall deck; I beleive man-lands are the single greatest way to deal damage in control/tempo decks. Again, you get choices. You can tap it for mana OR use it as a creature. It is harder to kill than other creatures (as sorcery speed creature removal doesn't effect it and many good destruction/removal spells indicate a "non-land" card. Raging Ravine has won a lot of games for me.

Fresh-faced deck

Ice_Water, 11 years ago

Added Jace, Memory Adept and Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver

Deck has become more streamlined and mill based, I have successfully milled some opponents and if I don't mill them completely, Consuming Aberration and Gift of Orzhova do the rest

Phage the Untouchable i like her as well but suicide is no option

Maelstrom Archangel and Maelstrom Nexus help to play more Cards

Consecrated Sphinx the jusual more Cards more Chaos

ptdacon83, 11 years ago

The basic concept is to try to keep the card draw rolling fast enough to maintain card advantage and a lead on your opponent, while using transmutes (which is difficult to counter and the spells that can counter it are rarely seen, even as a sideboard option) to find the pieces you need and counter spells to protect them when they come into play. I did a rework on the deck, the core idea is still the same it just does it differently. I changed it to work more as a lock down deck that manipulates your opponents permanents to your advantage, It has a lower mana curve and more negative enchantments that will likely stay in play longer if you can resolve them as you cast. I used low cost, easy to cast hard counters that mostly will just be for counters against your spell casts and destroy target spells. It is fun to play though I am not sure if it is more effective than the previous build.

Monday night Standard 3-1

sk00kes, 11 years ago

Went to a crowded store that pays out horribly, but i wanted to get more games in with the deck.

First match-up against mono-black.

My opponent went on the Pack Rat plan. Plan foiled by Palukranos on the first game Second game he tried again, and had the removal to support it. Went to a third game and my deck simply manhandled his, he was a turn away from a Gray Merchant of Asphodel which may have helped him stabilize, but i landed a Garruk, Caller of the Beasts and it stuck 2 turns, so that was it...

1-0

Second game was against Rakdos Aggro. First game he got me down to 2, but landing a pair of Courser of Kruphix i was able to crawl my back up to 10 life to stabilize, build my board and win. Second game after some careful play with Simic Charm i was soon the aggressor.

2-0

Blown out by Gruul mid-range. First game wasn't a game, i mulled to 5, didn't draw very well, so i just hung on for as long as i could for him to reveal more cards. Second game he blew me out with a great hand full of Planeswalkers and topped it off with an overloaded Mizzium Mortars. He was kind enough to run a third friendly game so i could better see the matchup. i won that one, and i the decks really are on similar planes. So it sort of depends on who monstrous's their Palukranos, or overloads their sweep first. But if none of those factors hit, then my deck is superior by far in the deep water.

2-1

Last match against Rakdos Burn. Really good tempo play, but his deck main-board had no answer in a single card for my larger threats. First game i was able to control the board, eventually land a Garruk, stick a Nylea, God of the Hunt, which likely would have won the game with trample over his army of 1/1 elemental tokens, but i scryed a Cyclonic Rift which i knew would be a guaranteed win next turn. Second game he drew all the right cards and nickel and dimed me to death. Kudos for the final point of damage coming from Deathrite Shaman, thought i'd seen the last of him after his modern banning... Final game came down to variance. He had numbers and more cards, i was top-decking and in need of help. Peeled a Garruk that stuck for 2 turns, and he started drawing lands... That was it.

3-1

Glad to get the games in, led to me deciding to move Boon Satyr to the main. There were just 2 cards i had a hard time filling the slot. Sylvan Caryatid game me protected guaranteed ramp, but sometimes left me hollow in the mid-game with less threats. Burning-Tree Emissary provided explosive draws and good devotion, but really isn't as good synergy wise. Considering card in the 4 drop slot or over puts me in danger of stumbling out of the gate with a higher curve. So Boon Satyr fits well, giving me option to play it early and i certainly have the mana to bestow for a nice combat trick later...

So far i don't have a bad match-up, but i would like to test against control more...

Changing the deck to Orzhov

meulaven, 11 years ago

After the way this deck performed I have decided to drop red. I have never had luck with 3 color decks so I am going to go back to one I have done well with before.
