Rounds

  • Boros Aggro flyers 2-1
  • Gruul Aggro w/ Monstrous 2-0
  • Mono Black Devotion 2-0

Mono black devotion is the notable deck to have a win against here. Game 1;

People might hate on the build, but if you can't see the symmetry, I apologize, but having built the deck from the floor up and finally trying it, I can say it's amazingly fun and extremely effective.

First FNM

Desthro, 11 years ago

First FNM was fantastic. Deck went 4-1 (placed 5th.... Somehow...) 1st Game- Played against a U/W/G espery-midrange deck, it was fairly strong and had lots of answers with threats like Elspeth, Jayce and Wurm tokens. It was a 1-2 loss, almost a draw but I got a seriously bad draw on lands which caused our game to run short. I didn't have the card draw I needed to stay competitive in game 2. I should have sideboarded the entire anti-control set in, but did not and paid the price. (L 1-2) 2nd Game- Played against a B/U mill deck, first game was a loss, every mill spell milled spells and never land. close game anyway. Second game, Desecration Demon + Herald of Torment kept him under control. Third game, Desecration Demon again for the win. (W 2-1) 3rd Game- Played against an R/G bloodrush deck, player had lots of power up front but no midrange-endgame. Putting his creatures into the grave with Devour Flesh, Dreadbore and Bile Blight sealed the deal early, with Grey Merchant pulling me back from the brink with an amazing 1 life comeback. Very satisfied. (W 2-0) 4th Game- Played against an R/W/G Enchantment Aggro deck with lots of hexproof, proved to be a challenge, but early Bile Blight took care of her 1-drops and Devour Flesh handled her hexproof creatures. First game was fast with Desecration Demon taking the game. Second game, lack of devour flesh to handle a single hexproof creature proved to be my undoing. (nothing like 12/12 unblockable to make your day...) Third game, after a mulligan to five cards, Two Grey Merchants saved the day turning a 6 life vs 18 life game into a 16 life vs 8 life game. After that, Desecration Demon came to the rescue. (W 2-1) 5th Game- Played against an American Control deck, First game was long as we kept top decking land. Eventually he ran out of answers to my piles of creatures and succumbed to a combination of Desecration Demon and Grey Merchant. Second game, I subbed in my hand hate and took out my gods and Bile Blight. I drew three Mind Rots to start, and after removing his sole counterspell with thoughtseize, his hand was gone in a matter of turns. By turn 6 he was top-decking everything, and with Underworld Connections, Desecration Demon and Sire of Insanity on the table, there was nothing he could do. (W 2-0) Overall, 4-1 at its first FNM, sadly I placed 5th but it was good enough for a first show. Any suggestions or improvements would be greatly appreciated!

FNM

So this deck performed horribly. Went 0-3 in rounds with only 1 win in the matches. The deck has potential when it gets going but it seems too slow. I dropped out before the last 2 rounds, did not want to risk going 0-5 on the night, I was already irritated.

Round 1 Esper control: This was the type of match I most feared. Anything I tried to cast was either countered or D-sphered. The few times I got creatures out they were killed immediately. Lost both matches.

Round 2 Naya midrange: This guy's deck was fast. I couldn't keep up with Brimaz or Xenagos either game. Lost both matches again.

Round 3 MBD with a splash of blue for Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver. Ashiok was the reason for my defeat game 1. I got him game 2 with Blood Baron and stormbreath. Game 3 he got me with multiple Gary's.

I've gotten used to losing lately but this deck wasn't even fun for me.

Lots of changes and came in 3rd at FNM

pryoplasm, 11 years ago

Lost of changes, went for smaller more cost effective creatures. Things like Tormented Hero and Daggerdrome Imp, took out Dark Favor and instead I'm now running 4 of Boon of Erebos...there have been a few times when a heavily enchanted creature ran up against a kill spell, and was able to regenerate to help out Ended up coming in third at FNM overall, going 3-1 in matches with all of my wins being 2-0, and my one loss they ended up winning 2-1. Also out of 2 packs, ended up with a Kiora, Spirite of the Labyrith foil, and Chromanticore, so not horrible overall.

#10th at Villainous Lair Gaming 2/21/13

sharkudi, 11 years ago

Got #10th out of 38 players in a Swiss Tournament with 4 rounds. Went 3 - 1 in matches and 6 - 2 in games. My OPP win % was a lousy 41%, leaving me in 10th. boo.

ROUND 1 RDW 2 - 0

GAME1 I managed to handle the board well and outpaced chandra phoenix with Desecration Demon ftw. GAME2 he got me pretty low in life before a late turn Brimaz, King of Oreskos became too much.

ROUND 2 Gruul Xenagos 0 - 2

GAME1 he mulled to 5 on the play, and i still couldn't beat him. I never got an answer to Domri Rade + Courser of Kruphix in time. GAME2 hit him with 2 Lifebane Zombie and a Thoughtseize and still lost to Stormbreath Dragon's

ROUND 3 Naya budget/booster deck 2 - 0

GAME1 & 2 sooo... this guy bought a few boosters and built a deck out of it since he thought it was a draft night. he got lucky and won the 1st round somehow... so i easily beat this deck. He was a nice guy and we played a game of EDH afterwards because i won so fast. Unfortunately, this match up cost me a TOP8 spot.

ROUND 2 Naya good Stuff 2 - 0

GAME1 he ran Boros Reckoner + Fleecemane Lion + hero of irosa + Eidolon of Countless Battles style Naya mid-range aura deck. He got a heavily beefed up Hero with Eidolon and Ethereal Armor and Unflinching Couragefoil. I had an Obzedat, Ghost Council and Whip of Erebos doing some heavy work saving my ass turn after turn until i drew into a Hero's Downfall I got Elspeth, Sun's Champion going not long after that and he scooped. GAME2 Lifebane Zombie got a Brimaz, King of Oreskos from him. and then played one of my own. my next turns were Underworld Connections drew into Obzedat, Ghost Council and then Whip of Erebos. that combo does wonders against so many match-ups. Elspeth, Sun's Champion came in after that, i -3 killing all of his blocking army except his 1 Precinct Captain and attack for the win with obzedat and soldier tokens.

MVP of the night: Obzedat, Ghost Council + Whip of Erebos really contributed to my 3 winning rounds. Honorable Mention: Elspeth, Sun's Champion talk about a finisher. oi!

I made some really good trades getting my 3rd Mogis, God of Slaughter and 4th Temple of Malice. Going to be playing Mono Black Devotion w/ 3x Mogis next week. Excited to try it out!

Went 3-1 at FNM

fnmfan1997, 11 years ago

So I went to an FNM tonight and went 3-1! Super pumped.

Round 1 I faced a red/white burn deck and it was my only loss of the night in 3 games. Game 1, I won when I just got to big to fast of a mull to 6, and he couldn't kill me in time before I over ran him. Game 2 he got out a Satyr Firedancer and burned me and my creatures away to fast and killed me with ease. It didn't help that I got stuck at 3 land for the majority of the game. Game 3 we traded blows back and forth, until I had a 9/9 Arbor Colossus to his nothing. We were both at 1 life and he top decked a burn spell for game. Absolute bad luck for me in a super close game I otherwise would have won, but still a respectable only loss of the night.

Round 2 i faced mono-white devotion and won in 3 games Game 1 I won with ease, as my creatures just got to big for his little weenies to deal with. Game 2, he got out Cavalry Pegasus and killed me like turn 5 with flying humans that I just couldnt deal with. Game 3 went exactly the same way as game one as I kept him of devotion and swung with my big creatures that he couldn't deal with.

Round 3 a faced another G/W aggro and I won in 3 games. Game 1, I got to many large threats for him to deal with and just over ran him for game, since he got stuck on 3 Experiment One. Game 2 I had in the bag with tremendous board advantage, and was going to win next turn, but then he top decked Glimpse the Sun God tapped all my creatures and swang for lethal. It was bulls**t. Game 3 went exactly like Game 1 except he flooded on white mana, and couldn't cast many of his spells. An easy win.

Round 4 I faced a R/G aggro deck that I also beat in 3 games Game 1 he stalled out at 3 lands, and I curved out literally perfectly while he was stuck at 3 lands. Experiment One into Fleecemane Lion into Boon Satyr into Polukranos, World Eater into Collective Blessing for the easy win, and "The perfect Curve?" Game 2 I stalled at 3 lands, got nothing going and he killed me with ease. Game 3 was the battle of big creatures, and thanks to Collective Blessing and 2 Arbor Colossus to deal with his 2 Stormbreath Dragon, I won in a race to see who could get biggest fastest. I game I barely won, but was a ton of fun to play.

Overall, a great night where in my packs I pulled a Xathrid Necromancer an Elspeth, Sun's Champion and a Hero of Iroas in my prize packs! Super fun night, and the deck ran almost perfect! Super fun deck, I love it. Thanks for all the help and support guys, and best of luck to all in your future Magic Exploits!

3-1 FNM

mikemega, 11 years ago

Game 1 - Grixis (BRU): 2-0. Rolled over this deck. Mogis is truly a boss. Not hard to activate with the cards in my deck.

Game 2 - Gruul (GR): 2-1. I feared this deck. Game 1 went just as planned. Game 2 Kept a 2 land (double-Guildgate) hand. He played Ghor-Clan Rampager bloodrushed on his GCR for 8, then Flesh / Blood me to finish. Game 3 - 2 Demons on board just dominates.

Game 3 Jund (GRB): 1-2. Game 1 I destroyed him. Drew both removal and threats and Mogis finished. The next two games were all about Domri Rade, Courser of Kruphix, and Reaper of the Wilds. Mizzium Mortars kept blowing stuff up. This deck was truly amazing to watch. Finished me with double Stormbreath Dragons. I almost want to build that deck - he said he got the idea from StarCity somewhere....

Game 4 Mono-White Auras: 2-1: Thoughseize was a blessing in this matchup as well as Duress out of the side. His seemingly harmless creature would suddenly Holy Mantle, Ethereal Armor, swing for like 10 out of nowhere. He had me on the ropes Game 3 I was at just 3 life to his like 18 drawing nothing but lands. He was able to ultimate Ajani, Caller of the Pride for many, many 2/2 cats. Plus a Eidolon of Countless Battles on board. We laughed. I let it ultimate cuz of the Anger of the Gods in my hand - the angriest Gods I've ever played. Restabilized. Drew threats. His hand was empty and so was his board - Demon & Stormy finished.

Going back to 2 Chandra, Pyromaster. Many compliments and questions about the deck. Can't wait to add Rakdos's Return. The Jund deck beat me with it and I'm thinking 2 main. If they have an empty hand, I win.

I need sideboard help. Phoenix gotsta go.

FNM test! GO!

Dorotheus, 11 years ago

So I did FNM tonight, and did pretty poorly overall, but I did what I could. After FNM I made some adjustments and some trades to get some tools. My sideboard IS NOW what it says it is, instead of the random stuff that could be ok, but really isn't that I was running.

Match 1: Jund Midrange 2-1
Was a really good overall game, Mutavault got me there mostly, and he couldn't deal with land destruction. Then game two I kept a bad but salvageable hand, lost for it. Game 3 was Mutavault and 3 Burning Tree-Emissaries and 2 lands destroyed. Shut him out that last one.

Match 2: RDW (not devotion) 2-1
Ruric Thar, the Unbowed won me both of the wins. Second game I got too many small creatures and was burned out, so I sided in Hexproof, but ramped to Ruric turn 3, and he scooped.

Match 3: Mono-Blue Devo 0-2
Thought I was ready for this deck, and I apparently wasn't.

Match 4: Selesnya Auras 0-2
Mulled to 5 first game, was bad, didn't really play anything. Second game, didn't ramp got him down to 4, ran out of steam, attempted to feint him into thinking I had a Ghor-Clan in hand, he didn't buy it, I lost.

I have my Gods Willing in side now, and that should allow me to drive home damage, as well as protect my dudes, plus scry one if I need to.

Is it done?

Ragkna, 11 years ago

I've made a lot of changes since I first posted this deck, and I'm really happy how it looks, I'm really looking forward to get the cards that I don't have (which are most of them, really :c ) but I think this deck is done, maybe i won't be winning tournaments or something (I don't really go to any of them however..), but I'm sure I will have a lot of fun playing with my friends. Still, any suggestions are always welcome! :))

Epic Match

icehippo, 11 years ago

Great results today, lots of wins and only one loss to a typical pro tour uwr control deck. When the match started I thought to myself that my deck was way too budget to compete with my opponent. I gave it everything that I had mentally and everything my deck had psychically. Eventually it was Celestial Colonnade that did me in as well as Snapcaster Mage making me have to play against the graveyard. It was the most fun and intense match I have played with this deck and I am very happy I was able to hold my own as long as I did against a deck that looked as if it should be winning pro tours. If only Powder Keg was modern legal I would have had an easier time against those man lands

FNM Results/Changes

Yadama18, 11 years ago

So at FNM I went 3-1-1. My wins were VS Grixis Control, Simic Goodstuff and RUG Monsters. I went to time with a Sliver deck(!) and lost to Mono-U devotion. I think my 2-1 loss to MUD was due to keeping a slow hand first game and just not drawing any sideboard stuff game 3. I also have few doubts that a more skilled pilot than me would have been able to take that Sliver deck a few rounds earlier.

A couple of things stood out, the first being Deputy of Acquittals not being needed as much. You really don't want her early on as she just ends up being a 2/2 beater. She's useful once you've set up that board though, so i'll keep 3. Lyev Skyknight is useful, just not 4-of useful so i'm dropping one.

In place of these I will be adding a Rapid Hybridization and an Archangel of Thune. Rapid is great as a one-of for this decks mortal enemies, Stormbreath Dragon and Blood Baron of Vizkopa and it isn't a dead card in other match-ups, as it can be used to take people off devotion mid combat, or buff one of your 1/1 tokens or even just as a free token when used on a god + card draw from Ephara. Archangel of Thune is pretty self explanatory, more power, buffs my board and heals me to boot. Think i'll go up on this number pretty soon when I can get my hands on more copies.

Also, i'm moving toward a more aggro strategy, so i'm replacing the Nykthos with Mutavaults. This means Sphinx's Revelation for 10 is no longer a thing, so i'm replacing these with Jace, Architect of Thought as it does more with less mana + adds to devotion.

Sideboard wise, I removed the 3 Rootborn Defenses and added a second Rapid Hybridization and 2 Cyclonic Rifts. I feel like this doesn't weaken my control match up too much, as I can just keep casting creatures and drawing off Ephara to keep pace against Supreme Verdict and helps incredibly with my aggro match-ups, which seem prevalent in my meta.

-2 Rubblebelt Maaka, +2 Hammer of Purphoros -2 Underworld Cerberus, +2 Stormbreath Dragon Sideboard changes: -1 Rakdos Charm, -1 Slaughter Games, +2 Sire of Insanity Deck went 3-1 during tonight's FNM which took 2nd place. It went 2-1 vs mono black, 2-1 vs B/R tribal minotaur, and 2-0 vs G/W aggro. Although it lost 0-2 to American Control, both games were very close. Slaughter Games was great at dealing with Sphinx.

FNM 2/21

travis11997, 11 years ago

Ugh...went 2-1-1. Not much to say, but it was kind of disappointing. Match 1 vs Simic Control (0-1) We only got through one game and part of game 2. This deck was crazy. Turns out Master Biomancer and Master of Waves is crazy. Match 2 vs Rakdos Minotaurs (1-2) Game 1 we went through about 5 turns of discarding and saying go ahead. Game 2 I won just by putting out lots of stuff. Game 3 he had a ragemonger and a Kragma Warcaller and I couldn't get rid of both. Match 3 vs Golgari Midrange (2-0) Both games my opponent got manascrewed. Not much to say here. Match 4 vs Random crap deck (2-0) It was the same deck I faced last Friday 1st match. I did over 200 damage both games.
