A BUNCH of changes - all for the better. I've play tested this deck MANY times, especially against control and it seems to work fabulously. The only thing it might not be able to handle is small speed decks. However, if everything works perfectly, this deck can pull off the Door in no time...and this time I can get creatures on the field :) Took out the One-Eye Scarecrows - they were stupid. I put them in the deck because one of my friends built a spirit deck - he would boost them to be some ungodly power and whack me with it. The scarecrow slowed him down a little bit. Haunted Guardian was stupid - it was just another defend, nothing else. Took out Ranger's path as well. Primal Surge doesn't like Ranger's path :( Put in chromatic lanterns - another way to get whatever color mana instead of solely relying on creatures which with board wipes were very prone to stopping my ramp. Took out 3 primal surges and instead replaced them with Diabolic Revelations. I usually have all the mana in the world so I'll pull the rest of my sorceries out and primal surge for my whole deck! Or whenever I feel like stopping :) Elixir of Immortality - This is a MUST against any mill deck. I also took out 4 forests and replaced them with Clock of Omens - when I surge, I want to be able to pop my door IMMEDIATELY. And....why not....I threw in some creatures so I could attack (not including Manor Gargoyle) 3 Phylactery Liches and 1 Garruk.

Playtest Series

Against zandls-big-ass-wipes-3rd-fnm end result (5-0-0), mainboard games only. Literally every game was either both of us doing barely anything for the early to mid game or the opponent ramped, or got some early creatures out, or animated keyrunes and started beating. At the end game I'd either counter his creatures or board wipe them away then land a jace (of either kind) then tick him up for a number of turns while countering whatever the opponent played, then ultimate the jace and either win by casting Psychic Spiral or getting a memory adept and eventually ultimate him as well into a Psychic Spiral again. The sideboard from my opponent mostly would be spells to try to slow down my wincon, but aside from the one of garruk the rest isn't scary.

So far with this little of data I'd have to say BANT control seems to be a good matchup, but it would be a good idea to not completely write it off. The Cavern of Souls was an annoying card, but 4 maindeck Ghost Quarter really helped and against this deck in particular they seemed effective. Also there appeared to be no maindeck spells that were bad in this matchup.

Against scg-1110-8 end result (3-2-0), mainboard games only. This matchup was somewhat difficult, with all the spells to make the opponent's creatures big ugly beasts I have to be extremely cautious. surprisingly enough it seems Staff of Nin was actually this deck's wincon for this matchup as once I win the card advantage war and clear the field this deck's mainboard quite literally can't seem to win, though I imagine the sideboarded sigarda and garruk along with 7 other sideboard cards (this deck appears to have only 4 not relevant spells in it's sideboard and those are even more creatures) I feel I probably won't win the match if I don't win game 1 against this in a tournament.

Got some time to test this out. Seems like the cards I have to add +1/+1 counters weren't as effective as the cards to add exalted. Thinking of changing some Gavony Township to Cathedral of War to stack more exalted.

I need to get one or two more Collective Blessing and play around with some of the creatures in the deck. Seems like for my area, with the amount of removal being played that using the Champion of the Parish and/or Crusader of Odric might not be the wisest idea. I'm tempted to alter this more to include some more green for Rancor and put those on Knight of Glory

So I've removed the splash of green. Didn't use it a lot, have the idea still in my head. I want to play around with the deck as it is right now, see how I do. Likely going to use it or my zombies deck on FNM, as it's a standard week.

Swapped out one Island for an Evolving Wilds. Got rid of Index, two Scroll Thief, and one Arbor Elf.

Added two Serpent's Gift and a Rubbleback Rhino to help with blocking, and a Spiked Baloth for some extra punch.

Added some cards to my sideboard. Natural End to handled troublesome non-creature permanents. Plummet and Towering Indrik to help against flyers.

Sideboard Utilization

Cosmicosmo, 12 years ago

I was gonna keep Plummet in my sideboard but i now realize that Oblivion Ring is a far more versatile card than plummet (especially against Black/red and Blue/red decks which seem to be so popular these days and don't happen to have a lot of enchantment removal). Thus, i'm going to keep it in my mainboard and replace it with Fog in my sideboard for those swarm/rush decks. This deck can handle most everything but if you need to switch something out for a sideboard card when trying it, do Oblivion Ring first as it is the most situational. Ray of Revelation obviously for enchantment control decks, Knight of Glory for black decks (which is like 70% of decks nowadays), Rest in Peace for graveyard hate (which works great since we don't really use our graveyard, except Rancor will get exiled but just try to use them wisely once its out. There's always Selesnya Charm in a pinch if you need trample). and lastly for burn/mill decks Witchbane Orb. That sideboard covers about everything that green/white has a weakness against, so don't neglect your options.

This deck went 6-2 at a very talented tournament. First set it played a Armada Wurm deck that was powerful and fast. My deck went 2-0 because of the counters and flying creatures. Next set was another counter deck like mine, but instead of angels it had Snapcaster Mage and bounce creators. My deck went 2-0, but it was close. Next set was against a zombie deck. It was slow and had no defense against flying. God's Army went 2-0. At this point I was very confident in my deck and thought it was going to take me to the top. Next set was against another zombie deck. It was faster and harder hitting than the last. Both games were close, but I ended up losing 0-2.

Currently testing Alchemist's Refuge in the list to make the bant match up better. I actually like it a lot, it's helped me against Bant being able to Rakdos's Return when they're tapped out, and against RDW, being able to flash in Thragtusk in response to burn, so they can't burn me in response to Thragtusk. Also, killing Hellriders in their turn is not irrelevant. Considering Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker for the deck or side. Have added Vraska the Unseen to the side to test her, just haven't had time to actually play her yet

Match against my uncles mono-green deck.

Xzallion, 12 years ago

round one I couldn't get a fourth mana out before his mana ramp destroyed me.

Round two went differently, with me getting a Corpsejack Menace out early, Lumberknot and Lotleth Troll later in the round, and finishing it with two Primordial Hydra's. The Lotleth Troll and Lumberknot held him off until the Primordial Hydra spun out of control, stopping at 110/110 with lifelink and trample, I never dropped below 18 health.

Round three was a hard fight, with my uncle starting off with three hard to bypass deathtouch creatures. eventually I got out two Corpsejack Menace's and a Primordial Hydra which ended up at 100/100 with trample, and I played two Essence Harvest's to finish the game.

TCG Open 5K Montreal

Zadkiel, 12 years ago

That was the first big tournament with this deck and I was pretty anxious; I didn't have all the cards I needed for the deck. I was still missing 3 Jace, Architect of Thought and some other cards. I replace them by other cards and pray to be classified in the top 32. I then proceeded to start the first match.

Round 1: 0-2-0.

I was playing against a U/W Flash deck created and popularized by Shane Remelt. I pretty much knew his deck better than him. Even though, I was not able to beat him. Too much counterspells for him, not enough treats for me.

Round 2: 2-0-0

I played against what I thought was a mirror match up, he was in fact playing 4CC (no green). The first game was a humongous pain in the ass. I almost milled myself, leaving 8 cards in my library when I finally killed him by drawing a Snapcaster Mage from the top of my library to flashback a Rakdos's Return for 12 on him. Second game I sideboarded my 2 Jace, Memory Adept and 2 Slaughter's Game. I slammed the Jace on turn 4 (via Rakdos Keyrune) and then proceed to mill him in 4 turns.

Round 3: 0-2-0

He was playing the usual 4C Rites deck. I lost the 2 games because the deck was too fast. He established a board presence with lingering soul’s tokens and slammed an uncounterable Craterhoof Behemoth on turn 7. That was the end for me. Oh, and I was also mana screwed.

Round 4: 2-1-0.

I was playing against Red Deck Wins. Won the first game with a perfect hand of 1 Searing Spear, 2 Pillar of Flame, 1 Think Twice and some lands. I was then top decking like a boss. He won the second game because of some mistakes I made and finally I won game 3 with a Rakdos's Return of 4 on turn 5 and one of 3 the next turn (thank you Snapcaster Mage). With no cards in hand and a Rakdos Cackler on the battlefield for him, I easily won that game. I think he may have kept a hand of lands and big creatures, not the best choice for him.

Round 5: 2-1-0.

He was playing against U/W Flash again, one of my worst matchup, but I think my opponent didn't know how to play his deck. I started the game aggressively looking to see if he had counterspells. He didn't and I proceeded to win game 1 in 8 turns (which is pretty unusual). The second game he started and we were both mana screwed. Luckily for him, he have a lot of draw spells he can use to help him find some and after some turns of drawing, he put an Augur of Bolas equipped with a Runechanter's Pike and then killed me in two turns. The third game was very close, but I was able to attack him for 34 damages in the last turn of the Time. The victory was possible only because of the overpowered Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker.

Round 6: 1-1-1.

I want to make sure everybody know that 4C Rites is not a good matchup for me. The round ended up as a tie only because he made some mistake, not because my deck was better. Sigarda, lost heron was about to kill me when the last turn of the Time ended.

Round 7: 2-0-0.

Junk Midrange was not too much of a deal. In fact, it was really a weird matchup. I won game one before he was able to put anything else then a Thragtusk in play. Anyway I had Olivia Voldaren on the battlefield, so I stole his only creature and swung for the kill. The second game, I sided in some Slaugher's game to see what his deck was. On turn 4, when he had 4 mana and no creatures in hand, I dropped one of the slaughter's game naming Thragtusk to see his deck and get rid of a threat I knew he had. What was my surprise when I saw a hand with 3 thragtusk and a Cavern of Souls. He the conceded the game after I played an Olivia. I was not sure how his deck got there, but at least I got the win.

Round 8: 2-0-0.

WTF was this deck. I won game one by burning him for exactly lethal after he put a door to nothingness on the battlefield with the mana to crack it and win the game the next turn. The second game was not a real one. He mana flooded like I never saw someone mana flood before. He played a total of 3 spells and ended up with 15 lands. I won without even trying.

I finished 26th out of 150 people, with a score of 5-2-1. Even if the deck was not finished, I was very happy to see how it worked, especially the keyrune. That Rakdos Keyrune saved me maybe half of all the games I have played that day.

Final score: 11-5-1.

PS: If you know what cards to sideboard against 4C Rites or U/W Flash, I would really appreciate the help.

FNM 16 Nov

A rough night at FNM magic for sure, but very educational.

Match 1: Win (2-0)

A patchwork Jund deck that had no specific theme. Some scavenge, some defender, some fast aggro...the deck just had no apparent flow to it. Both games he put up a weak defense and was quickly killed. It just wasn't a memorable match.

Match 2: Loss (1-2)

G/R Werewolves. Primarily using Immerwolf and Mayor of Avabruck  Flip to boost what few creatures he played. It was very apparent that we were evenly matched.

Game 1: He had zero response for creatures that I was playing, but used Moonmist to keep me from dealing any damage. He got a last minute Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip that gave him the life gain he needed to survive my final attack (leaving him at 2 life), then he attacked back for the kill.

Game 2: After mulliganing down to 6, I came on very strong from the beginning with a Predator Ooze, Primordial Hydra, and Champion of Lambholt. He couldn't block because of the champion, so he swung out and brought me down to 3. I finished him off the following turn.

Game 3: I drew nothing but Swamps, so I couldn't cast anything. I was easy pickings with no blockers and was quickly killed. A very disappointing game 3 after two extremely close matches

Match 3: Loss (2-0)

A U/W Control deck. The only creatures in the deck were Restoration Angel and Snapcaster Mage.

Game 1: Nothing I cast ever hit the table... everything was countered. He paired up a Restoration Angel with Runechanter's Pike and the game was over.

Game 2: This game I had a hand that allowed me to cast multiple spells each turn, so I could actually cast spells successfully. Once Deathrite Shaman got on the table, I was able to strike back by destroying his graveyard. I had him down to 2 life and he pulled a last minute life gain back to 10 (I forget which card it was). I worked him back down to 4 before he paired Restoration Angel with Runechanter's Pike again and finished me off.

Match 4: Loss (2-0)

RDW. This match was very frustrating because both games I drew creatureless hands. And if you don't get early creatures on the board against RDW... well then the red deck wins.

Match 5: Win (2-1)

G/W Centaur Tokens.

Game 1: I got Deathrite Shaman on turn 1 and hit Blessings of Nature on a miracle on turn 2. Needless to say, the 5/6 creature on turn 2 made short work of him.

Game 2: I was hitting the same stride as Game 1, but he Selesnya Charm'ed all my creatures as I built them up. With my board kept clear, I was overrun by tokens.

Game 3: For some reason I can''t remember which creatures I had out, but I hit two miracle Blessings of Nature early in the game and he didn't have the Selesnya Charms he needed to kill my creatures. Making game 3 very quick.

So the final tally for the night was 2-3. Considering this is the first chance I have had to play this deck at FNM, I guess it isn't horrible. I learned a lot and will be thinking about ways to overcome some of the difficulties I encountered.

After some games online, I've found that the deck either fails miserably or succeeds in spectacular fashion. However, it's still very fun to play simply for the troll factor. Team Usage

ResurrectedSage, 12 years ago

In Two-Headed Giant this deck is devastation, but only if there's someone who can cover the early game for you. However, I had a teammate who could do that and the only time we lost was when he was mana screwed. I consider this deck playable, just not if you're by yourself.
