Top commanders/cards that draw the most hate

I have been curious to see what cards you guys think draw the most hate. For me I think Sorin Markov, Magister Sphinx, Obliterate, Oloro, Ageless Ascetic, and Serra Ascendant make me pretty mad. Thoughts and ideas?

Zur the Enchanter because every game plays exactly the same.

Umm yeah, whenever I play my Nekusar, the Mindrazer Chaos wheel deck, Nobody really focuses on me unitl I play the first wheel effect. If I cannot chain into them for the win, I am going to be focused on. Once in a while, I go the poison counter route, so it wont take a s long to win. Lol. I am a dick.

Pretty much any commander that needs to be built around. My Feldon of the Third Path never really gets to see the light of day too often, especially if you've got some of your best recursion critters in the graveyard.

Whatever cards I cast. Its ridiculous how my goodstuff decks always eat the counterspells while Scion of the Ur-Dragon and The Mimeoplasm decks simply go untouched (then go off). I'm bitter. Anyway, Swords of X and Y, Omniscience, Eldrazi Titans, Praetors, even Mom (Mother of Runes) get hated in my playgroup. Also, Grand Abolisher, Prophet of Kruphix, Bloodchief Ascension, and Luminarch Ascension are others. Basically, whatever gets cloned or answered instantly is what my group doesn't like. We don't complain (very often), but it becomes clear very quickly what will and won't be acceptable. Heck, whenever I cast a Boundless Realms (regardless of board state - I can have 1 or 0 cards in hand as well), I become a threat. Why? Because lands are scary.

Sorry if I seem whiny. I build my commander decks without a refined strategy in order to have fun and promote fun (I just like to play cool cards; winning isn't super important, although its always the goal) without my playgroup saying "Hey, we need to kill this guy ASAP". I even use Selvala, Explorer Returned to appease them! But alas, I'll have to start playing Living Plane + Linvala, Keeper of Silence to force a soft lock, so I can do my fun things.

Of all the rage-inducing, unfair, broken cards in EDH...

Nothing can compare to Armageddon.

Riku of Two Reflections isn't necessarily a fan favorite either. A 2/2 that copies creatures, instants and sorcery spells is usually dealt with pretty quickly.

Ob Nixilis, the Fallen can be devastating if built competitively.

Jenara, Asura of War is another deck that I just hate running against.

Rhys the Redeemed is brutal.

I have seen all of these commanders win turn 5 consistently. (all decks by the same guy; he's not a fan of fun.)

Urborg School for Mimes is the deck that I get the most hate for using. The Mimeoplasm just gets so much hate.

I can't believe I'm the first one saying this but I absolutely HATE Kaalia of the Vast. One trigger and all of a sudden it turns into "kill the kaalia player or we're all dead". No politics at all. I just don't like her at all.

OMG ThisIsBullshit you just ninja'd me with my own rival. Lol. That's like a double ninja. Lol

January 27, 2015 10:24 p.m.

I play Kaalia and I can testify to that lol. Four player free for all turns into archenemy when Kaalia hits. the field.

PreZchoICE1 says... #14

Kaalia should be played in larger groups than 4, same with Derevi, Mimeoplasm, Nekusar ect. because then at least there is a better chance to best each one with the correct alliances. The biggest problem with commander format is really that most times people dont think to play 6-8 person games when those decks are present. 1v1 seems very unexciting and uninspired as a format, I mean its fine if its you and your brother on a thursday night at home or something but I personally would love to see people gaming commander on a much bigger scale playerwise.

Poker games take hours, Catan takes hours, why can't Magic?

January 27, 2015 10:45 p.m.

It can, I just find that a 6 hour game doesn't work well for going to quite LGS on Wednesday evening. It really only works if you're someplace for a weekend or a day and just spend the whole time playing magic but long games can get really really boring or everybody loses because they deck themselves.

It can sometimes come down to how much time your opponents have spent reading up on "nastiest EDH whatevers: how to notice a combo commander" and so on and so forth. Though I've seen games become a quagmire of demagoguery and paranoia. Like the cold war.

I dig for my exile spells whenever someone in my group has white in their deck so I can deal with their eventual Avacyn, Angel of Hope. Riku of Two Reflections is counter or kill immediately or suffer the copy shenanigans of Terastodon, Phyrexian Ingester, Glen Elendra Archmage, and other nasties.

I'm trying to add LD to all my decks to deal with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth + Cabal Coffers.

gnarlicide says... #18

Yeah, My LGS does commander tournaments. The owner has it be 1v1 for around 4 rounds (which makes my Nekusar, the Mindrazer deck difficult to pilot as it only really shines in group games) then when it cuts to top 8 or top 4, it becomes similar to thunderdome.

If I can make it that far, then I have a chance. My deck can pretty easily churn out a win on turn 6-7. I have done it earlier with a nut draw/godhand and going the poison counter route. Never a good time.

I also occasionally play Zurgo. Lol, talk about nerd rage. I play nothing but boardwipes and kill spells. Drop zurgo, then play Armageddon or Worldslayer. Now watch me beat the shit out of you individually.

How did no one mention Iona, Shield of Emeria? She's the worse.

January 29, 2015 4:06 p.m.

I don't think a lot of people run mono-white, and if they do I think Avacyn is a more popular commander. Iona is usually just part of the 99. But I agree, she's terrible to play against.

I think that usually what draws hate are the things that get the biggest reactions at a table. Ive seen Kaalia of the Vast drop and because no one piped up about it it is (stupidly) left alone to win. Then Ill see people in the same game all focus down some poor guy with hie POS Niv Mizzet deck because it was hyped when the commander came to the board when really anyone who knows what things those decks can do (niv did have combos in it per the player) wouldve done it differently. Mob mentality is a thing in EDH especially with Novice players

so what I'm saying is that a well timed Word of warning to the table about another persons card will alot of times draw it more hate then it ever deserves.

:) Mind Games (: mwahahahaha

Niv did NOT have combos per the Player * edit to post above

January 29, 2015 10:55 p.m.

I find Sigarda, Host of Herons to be particularly obnoxious. It isn't an overpowered card by any stretch of the imagination, but I still find it maddening to play against. Might have something to do with my playgroup not running enough unconditional wrath effects mixed with my love of edict effects/having a Savra, Queen of the Golgari deck.

A lot have been mentioned already, but given most of the decks I build, I find that I'm either stopped down by Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, especially if I'm running Krenko, Mob Boss or Rhys the Redeemed as my commander, or by Sheoldred, Whispering One when I'm not running swarm. It's not the same kind of group gang-up hate as the other cards, but they are particularly obnoxious.

Obelisk of Urd will help your tribal decks against Elesh Norn's -2/-2.

Right, now I haven't been able to play games with me for a good while so I can't test out my combo, but the Gravecrawler + Grimgrin, Corpse-Born + Rooftop Storm infinite combo would probably draw a lot of aggro from everybody else....especially considering that if I get Warstorm Surge out, it's game over for everybody....

January 31, 2015 2:40 a.m.

Most of the Praetors are pretty bad, but my play group especially dislikes Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger. Personally, I think Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur is the worst one to have played against you, but more people run Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger in our play group, so the hatred makes sense.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of either Teferi, Temporal Archmage or The Mimeoplasm, though I have decks based on Sen Triplets and Narset, Enlightened Master that several of my friends just straight up refuse to fight anymore. Seriously, you play Corrupted Conscience on Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre one time...

Zedruu the Greathearted because usually those decks lock down the board and force a long an boring game, not because of constant shifts in board state butt because literally nothing is happening.

Kaalia of the Vast, generally less in bigger games but in a game with less than 5 people I immediately agro out the Kaalia deck.

Narset, Enlightened Master because she takes forever to kill people, but still requires many 30 minute long turns.

Iona, Shield of Emeria, Singlehandedly hoses my entire deck if she hits the field.

Apparently anything that forces you to discard is getting to grate on people's nerves now. Especially mass discard effects.
