A few things:
Back in the really early years, the rule for MTG was that you could only have four or five rare cards in your deck. SO having something like a rare land seemed kind of silly. So we used to open out unlimited and beta packs, and if we saw our rare to be a land, we used to just hand them off or throw them out.
Fast forward to when the first ravnica block released, i remember pulling copy after copy of Dark Confidant. And getting pissed as to how useless it was. It was a worthless card at the time, but something kept tugging at me and telling me it was good. But i couldn't figure out why anyone would print that abomination. Fast forward to 2012, there I was spending 90 USD each on a playset of them. times have changed.
