Phylath is an interesting commander coming out of zendikar rising. It obviously draws alot of comparisons to Avenger of Zendikar and clearly, Avenger is more powerful based on its ETB/landfall abilities. Phylath has a restriction that it only creates plant tokens for basic lands you control and for its landfall trigger, it only puts four +1/+1 counters on a single plant token. Although Avenger of Zendikar may be stronger, Phylath has red in its color identity so we are able to add red cards into the mix of our color identity. Gruul cards such as Omnath, Mina and Denn, Grumgully, and Fires of Yavimaya are cool additions we can make.

The game plan is simple, we want to make alot of plant tokens and landfall triggers with Phylath. We also want to support each individual part of his effects. The parts of his effects we can focus on: ETB, tokens(populate), creatures(the plant tokens) ETB'ing, and +1/+1 counters(proliferate).
