The Long Overdue Competitive Update! —July 7, 2021

FINALLY, I am manning up and getting myself into this update as this deck has gone through a TON of changes since I had last updated it nearly 8 months ago. It is a whole new beast so I am going to try and work through this update in stages:

Firstly, an Overall: I have wanted this to be another Power Level 8-9, Higher Tier Deck that can hang with the big boys and hold its own against all the Completive decks in my meta. This means that I have had to have efficient answers, solid game plans, and overall better/flexible mana. Its been a great change and this deck has definitely been able to hold its own against the high tier decks and even win! However, I will say that you kinda need to know what you are doing for this deck to really work. (Another reason I am updating this deck finally so people can play it online). I am going to start this intensive changelist with the lands:

Swamp, 2 Forest: ----------------------> Cragcrown Pathway  Flip, Blightstep Pathway  Flip, Darkbore Pathway  Flip,

Not much to say here, but I love the Pathways: truly, innovation of form and function, they are so good.

Lotus Field ------------------------> Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth:

With the new Cradle, it fixes all my Forest issues and helps ramp me a ton, its awesome. The Color fixing alone is awesome, but it helps another new card out too! Field is just TOO intensive and I don't have enough land recursion to make it work like I need it too. That being said, in the right deck with the right support it can be a whole setup. But in this instance, the Cradle just does more work.

Skarrg, the Rage Pits ------------------> Kher Keep:

I took this land out a long time ago, and I have realized the folly of my error. A Cheap emergency way to make Tokens toward the end of the game is never a bad deal. The Rage Pits are good, but Korvold never really needs it and other decks need it JUST a bit more. Thus, the change stays.

Exotic Orchard -----------------------------> Tyrite Sanctum:

This is a little harder to explain, but basically: If I get the Sanctum later in the game and it sticks, I make Korvold Indestructible and that is VERY good for this deck. I am playing with it still, but so far its been pretty solid, and the mana has been okay so far to handle it without color issues.

These next changes are gonna be a bit more fluid, but will come together later when I reorganize the Decklist a little.

Fiend Artisan ------------------------------------------> Chatterfang, Squirrel General:

Unfortunately, while Fiend Artisan is good, it is a little better in certain Birthing Pod lines... Where Chatterfang is a fucking HOUSE. It does all, and goes infinite with my plunderer as long as I have a sac outlet and one creature to start us off! Its been a great change and staying.

Impulsive Pilferer ---------------------------------> Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer:

Don't think Pilferer is gonna be gone too long, cause the card is super good. However, i love the flexibility and sneakiness that Ragavan can provide, especially in the early game and post-boardwipe. Its been a solid change, Pilferer will return but is benched for now.

Juri, Master of the Revue --------------------------> Melira, Sylvok Outcast:

So.... Juri was disappointing. Like, yea you can potentially get him big and then unleash a boom, but he's also super fragile that even when he is big, people force you to pop him off OR remove your ways to sac things. Especially in the competitive tables, I need more solid ways to win and Melira literally enables my persist cards: Which can win me the game as they are one of the major combos in this deck. Its been a welcome change.

Tevesh Szat, Doom of Fools ------------------------> Vivien, Monsters' Advocate:

It's hard to explain why Tevesh didn't work beyond "Thanks to Game Knights, He wouldn't LIVE long enough." I also think that i mainly used him to make creatures, and once in a while draw cards and while that's cool, I need more bang for my buck: And Vivien definitely provides: being able to play creatures from the top of my library AND Make tokens AND quickly be able to tutor for combo pieces? I am all in.

Gadrak, the Crown-Scourge ------------------------------> Goldspan Dragon:

I am honestly sorry for this change, but Gadrak is not good enough. Yea, he is cheap and after a Crux of Fate he can be disgusting, but... yea, It just ain't it, Chief. Not enough treasures for a deck that needs/wants to make more of them. Goldspan, however, has been a whole house, able to instantly make treasure on swing AND they double up! Its been so good and a smoother change.

Woodfall Primus ----------------------------------------> Assassin's Trophy:

Not much more to say other then efficient removal. Primus just costs too much and I have too many cards with big Mana Values vying for the top seat.

Ramunap Excavator, Plaguecrafter, Demon's Disciple --------------------------------> Worldly Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Diabolic Intent:

Unfortunately, i have come to learn that cEDH does not like variance and that a certain amount of Tutors go a LONG way in any deck. Crafter and the Disciple are ineffective removal options when opponents have big enough boards and/or have recursion options. And Excavator is too vulnerable to wipes or burn spells to stick around when needed most. Thankfully, these tutors have been oh so helpful and have made the deck MUCH smoother overall.

Cavalier of Night ------------------------------------------------> Tergrid, God of Fright  Flip / Tergrid's Lantern  Flip:

Nothing will ever feel better then when I used the Ultimate ability of Liliana, Dreadhorde General and had Tergrid out and then immediately stole everyone's board and WON on the spot. I know the previous change would seem counterintuitive, but fuck off this card is amazing. Mini-It that Betrays is awesome. AND, in the rare occasions I can build infinite mana loops with no way to win, the Lantern then becomes an immediate win condition. Its a weird card but when it works, it WORKS.

Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest ----------------------------------> Beledros Witherbloom:

I just feel like Mazirek is not what what this deck is going for, and when this deck is essentially trying to feed Korvold to get him huge by sacrificing creatures, your board can't get really wide (more often then not). With Beledros, not only does he make tokens EVERY upkeep, but he also: gains life, AND can untap my lands when I need to combo off. Plus, He is a dragon which while isnt a huge deal means that i can fire off a crux of fate with no problems. Thus, the change is staying.

Pawn of Ulamog -----------------> Tireless Provisioner:

With this new card, Pawn of Ulamog is laughably inefficient and thus, swapped. Plus, Nontoken creature focused cards are a bit of a non-bo in here.

Smothering Abomination -------------------------------------------> Ignoble Hierarch:

I think a bit more ramp is necessary, and unfortunately Abomination can be disastrously bad if I am left with Korvold and have to sac it. At least I have extra ramp, and if I ever need to swing at someone with Just Korvold Ignoble will power it up as well.

Bastion of Remembrance -----------------------------------> Heroic Intervention:

Sad, but Needed room for a shield card. I liked Bastion as enchantments are a bit harder to remove but being able to save things on a dime is more important.

Mayhem Devil ---------------------------------> Chaos Warp:

Same deal as above: Being able to remove game winning threats at instant speed is god tier good. Thus, swapped. Plus, I have come to find that Korvold is more about making its own engine turn, not make everyone sac things. Thus, swapped.

Revel in Riches ---------------------------------> Deflecting Swat:

Revel is great, but... but Its just not good enough, especially as a 5 mana "do nothing" enchantment, And with Korvold I am always using the treasures like an absolute mad man, so they can never stockpile long enough for me to take advantage of the win con. I do want it to come back, and one day, it will. Until then though...

Living Death ------------------------------------> Immersturm Predator:

I think, personally, this is more meta dependent then natural. There's a few decks, esp amongst the cEDH crew. Lots of grave manipulation and makes Living Death not that good... which is Unfortunate. However, Immerstrum Predator is a dragon, Free Sac Outlet, AND gets indestructible. Its a solid creature and due to the meta, A Solid change.

Anyways, That is all for now! Hopefully you all agree the deck is a lot more competitive now then its previous iteration!

I gotta make the update for this deck, but I have made a TON of changes and it kicks ass. It will usually win out of nowhere with a turn that takes like 5 minutes, but it works so beautifully well.

Update coming shortly

I would like to start by saying I love the deck and korvold is a ton of fun to play although I see a few key cards missing from the deck in my opinion. I have my own Korvold deck and I have to say that it is probably one of my more competitive decks however I did skimp on the mana base. Korvold, Fae-Cursed King_1 This is my current list and depending on how your group feels about infinite combos and what, not this deck is a ton of fun. There are a few combos with Dockside Extortionist and Temur Sabertooth making infinite mana and drawing your deck out to get direct damage with Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and Murderous Redcap since the persist and undying trigs cancel each other out you just need any sac outlet and then you can do infinite damage. Again this depends on your group's stance on comboing out. Regardless I would definitely add Mikaeus, the Unhallowed since he allows for multiple sac triggers and he's kinda a nice card to have.

Also for the Dockside Extortionist, Temur Sabertooth Combo you do need to make sure that your opponents have at least 5 artifacts and don't make the mistake of doing it with your commander out or else you draw your deck before making infinite mana. But you would play him after you've made infinite treasures.

Thanks for the Upvote! This deck is still a bit of a Work in progress as I am still making some major changes to it and testing it out.

I opted not to put in Sabertooth mainly because 1. I think the Dockside combo is a little too reliant on Opponents boardstates and 2. with Korvold can become risky unless I am trying to draw into my Combo Pieces. Lastly, 3. I already have an ETB deck with Yarok (I still need to update it though, lol).

I think, for the moment, Mikaeus is a little too costly for what it wants to do. Like, as an overall card its good, but Im not adding Mike and Trike to the deck since I have pretty clear Lines of Play and how to win between all the treasures, Korvold, combos, etc. Plus, as my mana curve will show... I already have a LOT of cards in the 5 mana slot, and thats ideally when I wanna play Korvold. I think if I am purely just trying to do the combo, I would add in Melira, Sylvok Outcast just so I wouldnt have to worry about the persist counters to begin with, No more infect, AND It only costs 2 mana. Its a card I am really debating on throwing in here, so I highly recommend it.
