Pretty simple stuff; we run Boros colors skewed in favor of .

Arid Mesa will fetch our dual land or a basic Plains or Mountain, and the 1 point ping is a small price to pay for the privilege.

Sacred Foundry is the ideal Turn 1 land drop. We don’t have many cards that require , but those that do are absolutely crucial to the main strategy. Better to face a 2 point loss in life than to have to wait an additional turn to be able to play one of our finishers.

Sunbaked Canyon guards against a washout and can draw us a card in a pinch.

•6 copies of your basic Plains rounds out the mana base.

Sometimes things don’t go exactly according to plan. For these moments, it would be nice to have a way to stabilize and recover while we wait for the next attempt. Thus, we run a handful of spells whose sole intent is to pull our proverbial chestnuts from out of the fire before it’s too late.

Path to Exile is very effective in Modern, and with the high ratio of fetches/duals to basic lands, the drawback of casting this spell isn’t necessarily as grave as it may first appear.

Lightning Bolt is here to keep the pressure on and help clear away early game annoyances.

Putting Colossus Hammer into play is easy; actually equipping it is what tends to be problematic. To sidestep it’s hefty equip cost we run a playset of Sigarda's Aid and two copies of Magnetic Theft (courtesy of a suggestion by user zapyourtumor). This lets us hold the hammer in reserve and cast it on our opponent’s turn thanks to flash, which is great at helping our scant few creatures not to draw unwanted attention before we’re ready. More important though is that our hammer now equips for free, eschewing that weighty equip cost.

Now that we have the Motive and the Means to cast our powerful piece of equipment, let’s create the Opportunity. We have a three person squad, each creature occupying a particular role.

Giver of Runes functions as security, carefully watching over our Hammer Brother and ready to throw herself into the line of fire at a moment’s notice.

Stoneforge Mystic enters the games carrying, not a torch, but a hammer the likes of which would be sure to capture Tim “The Toolman” Taylor’s attention.

•The creatures most suited for equipping this unwieldy hammer are Kor Duelist and Swiftblade Vindicator (thanks to zapyourtumor once again for pointing out the latter!). Boasting trample and/or double strike, one or two tosses means sure death for our opponent. Don’t be afraid to equip one of the other creatures though; a 22+/22+ is ideal, but an 11/11 is a force to be reckoned with too.

In the rare event we either haven’t drawn the hammer or it somehow found its way to our graveyard, we run Steelshaper's Gift as part of our tool box to ensure we have one ready to go.

With an equipped Kor Duelist in play, aim to cast Thud or Fling.

Which spell to cast may depend on the conditions of the game and presence of mind. Against removal-heavy or control decks it might be prudent to hold the hammer in reserve while you wait for the opposing player to overextend themselves on their turn; then flash in the hammer using Sigarda's Aid and cast Fling at instant speed to deal lethal damage.

Otherwise, Thud rings in at less to cast and might be more beneficial in different scenarios. Either way we have 8 opportunities to hurl around 11ish damage directly at the opponent—that is, of course, after having attacked for somewhere around 22 damage immediately prior.

•Keep the table relatively clear with Lightning Bolt and exile spells.

•Cast Kor Duelist and Sigarda's Aid in preparation for Stanley Kirk Burrell‘s greatest contribution to the world of music.

•Locate Colossus Hammer with Steelshaper's Gift or Stoneforge Mystic, then field it and attach it to Kor Duelist to swing for around 22 damage, following up with an additional 11 or so thanks to Fling.

Lots of defensive options alongside some proactive choices here.

Apostle's Blessing is a staple, providing a bit of extra insurance for our strategy.

Pithing Needle offers a bit of intensely focused protection, shielding us from particularly devastating abilities.

Relic of Progenitus for a bit of graveyard hate against the resurgent Reanimator archetype.

Temur Battle Rage can work in tandem with Kor Duelist by granting trample, or can turn either of our other creatures into Kor Duelist if necessary.

Mutagenic Growth casts for free and can boost our hammer-throwing athlete’s physical conditioning past his natural peak. Shh...we don’t want to get busted for using PEC’s (performance enhancing cards).

”Then Jael...took a nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground...So he died.”
