jawz on GBr Rigging Alara

I'm having a lot more fun with this deck than I thought I would. Super janky though. Far too helpless in the first couple turns. But if it hits on turn 4 or 5 it's got real juice.

Tinkered with it a bit. Virtue of Persistence and Toxrill, the Corrosive feel a bit disappointing when I hit them from an Etali or a Rigging. They're weak as control cards too so I felt like swapping in Chaotic Transformation that is also a weak control card but is better at using the underwhelming Insect or Blood tokens from Old Rutstein (and hitting a Portal to Phyrexia from transforming a blood token is a much better control payoff than Toxrill). I almost want two Transformations in the deck but I have a nagging feeling that Gix's Command is important and I don't want to cut one of the other permanents for it.

Liliana of the Veil feels a bit better as a control card. Usually I don't want to discard a card unless I have a Portal in play, but if I have the option of transforming Lili into a Nissa later I can stomach passing without using her abilities for a while if I don't want the discard.

I'm also testing out one Anzrag, the Quake-Mole. It also enables the Rigging trigger on cheap mana, and it's a unique angle of threat that can get bonus Rigging tokens enabled. Olivia, Crimson Bride likes Anzrag too. Atraxa loves getting extra attacks. But even with all that if it's stuck on its own it doesn't have an ability that gets you unstuck like a Sheoldred or a Bramble Familiar or even a Shakedown Heavy can. Could easily be not good enough. The caves work really well. Playing the Invasion of Alara  Flip or hard casting the Atraxa is a bit hard but still consistent if you plan out your land plays carefully. Swapped out a couple Promising Vein for the Volatile Fault as the treasures are better for the deck than the basic land, and the extra ability to kill an opponent's man land is something that the deck might as well have as an option.

But overall this deck just wants to pull off a big Rigging play and then bully the opponent from there as hard as it can. If you need more than spot control to own the combats might as well concede.

Hi there, I saw your comment on the feed and thought I'd offer some suggestions on potential cuts. Some thoughts from looking over your deck:

  • First off, I think it's great that you have something like Insurrection as a top end finisher. Having played against some goad decks in my play groups ( mostly Kardur, Doomscourge), they can have trouble closing out games.

  • Your 4 drop slot seems pretty crowded and I think where you could focus some of your cuts. I think some of the cuts can eventually get turned into a couple more 2cmc rocks to help you ramp. If anything, you could probably swap 2-3 of your land slots for a couple more rocks like Talisman of Conviction, Boros Signet, Mind Stone, and maybe Cursed Mirror to copy a valuable creature.

  • Speaking of lands, I think if you stay heavy on the Enchantments, it'd be worth it to run Hall of Heliod's Generosity and maybe a few other utility lands like War Room, Minas Tirith, Scavenger Grounds, and Volatile Fault. Land destruction beyond Generous Gift/Beast Within isn't super common in most play groups. You could probably swap a few of your basics for some of these.

  • Goblin Diplomats might be more trouble than its worth, since your opponents can still attack you. This could maybe get swapped with Grenzo, Havoc Raiser

  • I think Fumiko can be a potential cut, mostly because she forces your opponents to attack, but not necessarily to attack each other like Goad might.

  • Firemane Commando as a removal option seems kinda clunky. You could maybe swap her for something like Soul Partition, which can be a protective effect or removal.

  • Mangara might be a potential cut, but I think this is more of a meta dependent call. I played him in a really early iteration of my Isshin deck, and oftentimes my opponents would remove him or play around his abilities by sending their 1 biggest and/or most evasive creature at me.

  • You can maybe swap Agitator Ant with Nils, Discipline Enforcer, since you have control over the counter distribution, and he also punishes the utilization of any counters on your opponents' creatures.

  • Assemble the Legion could be a potential cut, as it seems kinda slow for the payoff.

If you're interested, I theory-crafted a Nelly Borca deck that is trying to do what you want to do with this deck. I doubt I'll ever put it together, but it could be helpful to compare notes with. We definitely have some core similarities, but I think I lean a bit more into aggro elements for the deck to fall back to as a finisher, or if the Goad options aren't online. Check out The Slander Commander if you'd like.

Switched up the land base a touch to make room for Hall of Heliod's Generosity and Volatile Fault. Took out a few cards to make room for more/better ramp so now we have Thought Vessel, Gala Greeters, and Wood Elves. Found room for Esper Sentinel as we need more recurring card draw to enable effects like Minn, Wily Illusionist and Ethereal Investigator. We probably still want more ramp, but I'll see how it runs as is while I still look for a spot for Bronzebeak Foragers.

Thank you for reaching out Tsukimi, I deeply appreciate it. I like your custom commander, she seems like a fun twist on this clue/token archetype. In your play-testing, I'd say def be cognizant of how prohibitive (or not) the 3 clue sac requirement is. I don't play with Clues much, so I forgot they don't have to tap like Treasures lol. I almost recommended that the Clues she creates ETB tapped, like Ognis, the Dragon's Lash.

Anyways lol, in looking at what you have so far, here are a few thoughts I have:

  • Your 7ish sources of ramp that I'm seeing might be a bit low. Could be worth it to maybe get in 2-3 mana dorks for a little more acceleration on turns 1-3 (if that feels lacking).

  • Generally speaking, I always feel a bit iffy on cards like Hour of Reckoning, which have a very heavy single color investment, for 3 color decks. On that note, I think Cavalier of Dawn & Hour of Reckoning could be potential swap outs.

  • Bronzebeak Foragers could be a potential swap for Cavalier of Dawn, & gives you another Druid of Purification-esque effect that you could copy.

  • Detective of the Month could be a potential swap, mostly because you only have 2 other Detectives in deck, not counting the Detective tokens she could make.

  • Volatile Fault could be a cool addition to your mana base, especially since it makes a Treasure token.

  • Scapegoat and Fanatical Devotion are both fairly budget protection effects that can make use of the creature tokens your deck will make.

  • Fractured Identity seems kinda risky. I recognize that you could break parity with some of your token doubling/copying effects, but I feel like it could be troublesome to remove a big threat, and now there's suddenly 2 copies opposing you. I'd recommend checking out Soul Partition as a removal and protection option.

All in all, the rest looks pretty solid. I was surprised at how strong the reprints are in this precon. I'll take another look at your deck once I'm off work. These were just some quick thoughts I had on first look.

Pretty solid deck! I haven't made a mono colored deck in a while, but Red, White, and Black are the ones I'd probably take a shot at. Just a few quick ideas for stuff that might fit here:

  • Scapegoat and/or Brave the Elements are pretty cheap protection options.

  • If you're not opposed to Universes Beyond, Flowering of the White Tree could be an upgrade to Honor of the Pure. I've really liked it in my aggro decks that can run it. Mostly suggesting since I saw you already have Minas Tirith in your land base.

  • Fanatical Devotion could be a repeatable means of protecting your high value creatures by chucking.

  • More generally speaking, but I think one of the cool things about mono color decks is that you can run more utility lands like Volatile Fault or Scavenger Grounds than multicolor decks can typically get away with.

Best of luck with your deck if you've had a chance to play it irl. Ojer Taq seems ridiculous to get that creature token flowing.
