So I missed a couple of FNM write-ups, don't sue me.

Went to LGS for FNM, ended up doing quite a bit of trading, and FINALLY got a total of 3 Thoughtseize to replace my Dimir Charm. RIP charm, you're actually pretty cool.

Round 1: Mono Black Game one went smoothly, Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver did an excellent job of depriving my opponent of lands, and removal saw me through. Game 2 was just disgusting. I had to mulligan to 6 cards, but ended up with 2 Dissolve in hand, as well as 3 lands. Opponent and I exchanged Duress, and then I just countered everything he played, drawing into my 3rd and 4th Dissolves as well as a Syncopate. 1-0 (2-0)

Round 2: R/G Devotion/Monsters Not much to say here, just flat out got run over. Sideboard cards failed to make an appearance, and Stormbreath Dragon is a lot scarier when I'm not sitting with a Doom Blade in hand. 1-1 (2-2)

Round 3: Mono Black This opponent was more experienced with this deck, and for whatever reason, I always seem to get shit draws against this guy. Game one actually went very well, with me stealing a Pack Rat courtesy of Ashiok, and just beating face with a Demon. Round 2 was close, but my opponent edged me out with a timely Gray Merchant of Asphodel for 8. Game 3 was very frustrating, with me not drawing my second blue source until turn 7 or 8, at which point it was unsalvageable. 1-2 (3-4)

Round 4: R/W/B Tokens/Burn Played against this cool midrangey/combo deck based around tokens, Young Pyromancer, Assemble the Legion, Purphoros, God of the Forge with a splash of black for removal. Game one saw me steal two Pyromancers with Ashiok while swinging away with a Desecration Demon, I think I got more tokens this game than he did. Game two was a little better, but my singleton Duskmantle Seer along with an Aetherling closed it out. Funnily enough, we both took 7 damage off the Seer. I ate a Far / Away and a Devour Flesh while my opponent got smacked around by his Magma Jet and an Obzedat, Ghost Council. 2-2 (5-4)

Round 5: G/W Anti-Control Game one led me to believe I was playing a more aggressive G/W list, with Fleecemane Lion making several appearances. I noticed something was up when Spear of Heliod showed up, but my AEtherling beat my opponent down and blinked out of the trigger. Game two saw me get locked down by the combination of Spear of Heliod, Blind Obedience and Bow of Nylea. My enemy simply gained life, ate anything I could hit him with and then killed it with the spear. Aetherling was rendered impotent by Blind Obedience, so I scooped to give more time to game 3. This game saw me get wrecked once again by my own mana, with Selesnya Charm getting the assist. My opponent cast all 3 modes in the final game, to great effect. 2-3 (6-6)

Wasn't 100% happy with my piloting, I know I made at least 2 errors. Had my first experience getting flooded with black mana, twice in the same evening, and it was very unpleasant. I'm considering changing some basic lands to Dimir Guildgates. The changes I made before FNM were:

Main: -3 Doom Blade -1 Dimir Charm +1 Devour Flesh +1 Desecration Demon +1 Duskmantle Seer +1 Thoughtseize

Side changed drastically: -3 Nightveil Specter -2 Negate -1 Desecration Demon +2 Doom Blade +2 Dark Betrayal +2 Gainsay

After playing, I like Duskmantle, but definitely not main, and probably not in this exact shell. Too many high CMC things for me to hurt myself with. 3rd Demon main is the right number, and with all the black decks at my local shop, moving the Doom Blades was the right call. Last week someone pointed out that I was heavily slanting my sideboard against Esper control, so I attempted to balance it out a little. I think I used everything in the board this time, so that's good. After the event was over, I traded for a 3rd Thoughtseize, replacing my promo Dimir Charm and "completing" the deck. For now. :D

I like the deck but I feel like the cat doesn't get drawn as much as it should.(I saw at least one of my Planeswalker each game but almost half my games I went without a cat/scorpion) Had 2 mana flog rounds so maybe I should drop to 20 and add 2 more helpful cards(maybe draws or a bow and something else.)

Forgot to say: dropped 2 Elite Inquisitor in sideboard for 2 Fiendslayer Paladin, which is more usable. Also added 2 Knight of the Holy Nimbus instead of Divine Deflection, because I never have much mana

Played pretty well with (something close to) this build tonight! I'm finding Vraska the Unseen to be a huge threat in just about any match up. I wasn't able to get too much mileage out of Pack Rat but then again I only have one copy in the real world version of this deck so who knows. Slowing down and looking at this deck from a more removed control-esque perspective has worked wonders I'm growing more and more confident in my build decisions. I'm considering sideboarding two Putrefys, removing the two in my mainboard, and replacing them with Deathrite Shaman, more on that as I proxy test over the next few days.

First time playing this deck in full, with the Nightveils. 22 people in the tournament, 5 rounds.

Round 1 - R/W Aggro

New guy, been playing for barely a week. The store that I play at is what I wold consider a newbie store, in the sense that all of the good players help all of the new people learn how to play the game without just destroying them in the process...but my deck wanted me to destroy this guy. I ended up making 19 Elementals after using Nykthos to make 8 mana and dropping 2 Masters. Yeah. That kinda happened.

Record: 1-0 Match, 2-0 Game

Round 2 - Mono Blue Devotion

Ah, the mirror match. Haven't tested the deck against it, but I built the sideboard to combat it a bit. It was being played by somebody from the other store in town, who came along with Mr. Toddler (more on that in Round 4)

Game 1 was a race between both of our Thassas. I end up winning by using Nykthos for blue to make 7 mana, then dropping another Nykthos and using that for blue for another 7 and making everything I have unblockable.

Game 2 I overloaded Cylconic Rift all of his stuff away two turns in a row. Never saw Master, but I really didn't need him.

Record: 2-0 Match, 4-0 Game

Round 3 - Golgari Things

I'm playing one of my buddies who doesn't really care about Standard, but he has a Golgari deck that has pretty much the best things in the colors.

Game 1 he gets mana screwed and scoops when I drop Thassa.

Game 2 he sticks an early Desecration Demon that I had no real answers for, and proceeds to kill everything I play.

Game 3 he gets mana screwed again. I really don't like winning off of mana screws, but hey, a wins a win.

Record: 3-0 Match, 6-1 Game

Round 4 - R/B Aggro

Aggro deck that I knew was gonna be a bit of a pain, which is also being piloted by a guy who shows up every once in a while to a pretty casual store with $900 dollar decks, just so he can win 5 bucks in store credit. He's also one of those guys who cares more about his rating than anything, so he plays at the smaller stores to boost his points.

Game 1 ends in my favor with me just decimating him, due to him mulliganing down to 5 when he was going first.

Game 2 was when I learned that Mogis's Marauder gives himself haste as well as intimidate. No answers = scoop.

Game 3 is pretty much one of the greatest games I've personally ever played. I was at 1 life, my opponent is at 4, and I was staring down a board full of zombies. I draw a Master, play it, then pass, which he then kills off Master. He then proceeds to try to kill off my Tidebinder on his turn with a Dreadbore, which I respond by making it hexproof with Mizzium Skin. He then tells me that if I don't draw a creature, that I would lose on his next turn. I just so happen to top deck another Master. I play it, make 5 Elementals, and poke for one with my Judge's Familiar. He draws, and passes. I draw a Cloudfin Raptor, play it, and poke for another one. He draws, and passes again. I draw Omenspeaker, play it, evolve Raptor, and swing for game. After this, he begins to throw a fit, and refuses a handshake, because he didn't realize that the Dreadbore he used to try and kill my Tidebinder could've targeted his Tormented Hero to seal it until after he played it, and then drew 5 straight lands afterwards. Woohoo for misplays!

SIDEBAR: If you have someone like this who shows up every once in a while with a high caliber tournament deck at a casual store, where the entire goal is to get new people playing, and not to gain points, and then throws tantrums like a 4 year old after he loses, call him out on it. He was about to call the judge over to say that I had stacked the second Master on top of my deck in order to win. What he didn't realize is that the judge was watching us the entire time, due to our match being the highest profile match of the night, so he was immediately denied the review, saying that I played a completely legal match. I am all for high tension competition, but either go to a store that does that or a Pro Tour (there's a PTQ every year near where I live, as well as a Pro Tour itself across the state, so I'm in a pretty big competitive scene). I'm not trying to be the best player in the state; I'm not trying to go to the Pro Tour; I'm trying to help people have fun, not berate them and smash them down.

Record: 4-0 Match, 8-2 Game

Round 5 - Mono Red Devotion

This is the guy who won FNM the week before. I wanted to see what he was running before the tournament, but he wouldn't let me because he'd be ruining a possible surprise, but he'd let me see it afterwards. Well, I don't know if he's either psychic, or was foreshadowing the inevitable, but here we go...

Game 1 I pull out of nowhere by topdecking a Master, Thassa, and another Master, while also Rifting his stuff away.

Game 2 he storms out of the gate, and I play Domestication too early and miss out on a Reckoner, which he then uses to Fanatic for 8, then swing for game.

Game 3 I hold onto Domestication, and actually hit Reckoner. I had two Masters holding off his Ash Zealots and his Chainwalkers. He gets a Firefist Striker out, activates battalion, and proceeds to not make a Frostburn Weird block, completely forgetting about the Reckoner I stole. After the wiping of his board due to Reckoners effect, I swing for lethal.

Record: 5-0 Match, 10-3 Game, 1st overall

Woohoo! 14 bucks in store credit, and a foil. Not bad for someone who normally doesn't play blue.

So I'm liking the deck so far. It still seems weird that a blue deck can hit harder than my red deck, but anything can happen.

Less Renounces

sharang3, 11 years ago

I went from 2 Renounce the Guilds maindeck to 1; I'm finding it ends up snagging a Dryad Militant or Judge's Familiar more often than I'd like. I'd really prefer another three drop.

Pharika's Cure, on the other hand, is worth its weight in gold. Between Obzedat, Liliana + Mutavault, Pack Rat, and Erebos shutting down lifegain, the control matchups tend to be good. Aggro matchups, like white weenie, RDW, and G/R Monsters, on the other hand, can do a lot of damage to me. Pharika's Cure comes in great here; the 2 maindeck Cures are here to stay.

1 - Wodar Temple of Triumph Ordeal of Thassa Peak Eruption Prowler's Helm (foil) Triton Fortune Hunter Commune with the Gods Crackling Triton Dragon Mantle Gray Merchant of Asphodel - Pick 1 by Wodar Lagonna-Band Elder - Pick 2 by Deckbuilder345 Omenspeaker Portent of Betrayal - Pick 3 by GureiSeion Ray of Dissolution Wavecrash Triton Mountain Hm. Would have preferred an Omenspeaker hate, but it's a hate either way, so ::shrug:: Now held by: Actiontech - Take Omenspeaker and run. 2 - Deckbuilder345 Xenagos, the Reveler - Pick 3 by Actiontech Akroan Hoplite Cutthroat Maneuver Warriors' Lesson Aqueous Form Asphodel Wanderer Fleetfeather Sandals Gray Merchant of Asphodel - Pick 2 by GureiSeion Prescient Chimera Traveler's Amulet Triton Shorethief Two-Headed Cerberus Vulpine Goliath Wingsteed Rider - Pick 1 by Deckbuilder345 Plains Easy pick. Never unhappy to see THAT guy pick 3. Now held by - Goody - Hoplite would be really strong for their build. 3 - GureiSeion Prognostic Sphinx - Pick 2 by Actiontech Horizon Chimera Nylea's Emissary Tormented Hero Chosen by Heliod Commune with the Gods Griptide Hopeful Eidolon - Pick 3 by Goody Lash of the Whip - Pick 1 by GureiSeion Minotaur Skullcleaver Returned Centaur Setessan Battle Priest Spark Jolt Vaporkin Plains I slightly prefer this choice to Chosen by Heliod. Both good. Now held by: Euphonatron - Horizon Chimera seems easy enough. 4 - Actiontech Boon Satyr - Pick 1 by Actiontech Battlewise Hoplite Gainsay Thassa's Emissary - Pick 3 by Euphonatron Aqueous Form Baleful Eidolon Battlewise Valor Deathbellow Raider Guardians of Meletis Loathsome Catoblepas Spearpoint Oread - Pick 2 by Goody Vaporkin Vulpine Goliath Yoked Ox Swamp Yep, easy pick. Now held by: Absinthman - Vaporkin, Battlewise Hoplite, and Aqueous Form are all interesting choices. Tough pick to make here. 5 - Goody Curse of the Swine - Pick 2 by Euphonatron Decorated Griffin Purphoros's Emissary - Pick 1 by Goody Satyr Piper Asphodel Wanderer Baleful Eidolon Benthic Giant Disciple of Phenax Gods Willing - Pick 3 by Absinthman Gray Merchant of Asphodel Prescient Chimera Setessan Griffin Titan's Strength Voyaging Satyr Plains It IS in color and DOES hurt heroic decks also, but I still like one of the blue creatures. Now held by: Deco_y - Baleful Eidolon two in a row seems like the best idea. 6 - Euphonatron Thoughtseize Centaur Battlemaster Dark Betrayal (foil) Spellheart Chimera Stoneshock Giant - Pick 2 by Absinthman Annul Baleful Eidolon - Pick 3 by Deco_y Borderland Minotaur Dragon Mantle Felhide Minotaur Nessian Asp - Pick 1 by Euphonatron Viper's Kiss Vulpine Goliath Yoked Ox Forest I KINDA would have preferred the more aggressive Centaur Battlemaster pick, but this does stick to black. Now held by: Wodar - They don't have TOO much for Centaur Battlemaster, but it might be worth considering. Either that or Fox, probably. 7 - Absinthman Purphoros, God of the Forge - Pick 3 by Wodar Sea God's Revenge - Pick 1 by Absinthman Tormented Hero Triton Tactics Bronze Sable Cavern Lampad Crackling Triton Divine Verdict Gray Merchant of Asphodel - Pick 2 by Deco_y Last Breath Portent of Betrayal Sip of Hemlock Triton Shorethief Unknown Shores Plains Overvaluing the god, in my opinion. He's not that scary, the red one, and here they could have had Sip or Cavern Lampad, both great for them. Now held by: Deckbuilder345 - Huh. Last Breath, I suppose? I think this group is doomed. 8 - Deco_y Hammer of Purphoros - Pick 3 by Deckbuilder345 Battlewise Hoplite Cutthroat Maneuver Shipwreck Singer (foil) Vanquish the Foul Agent of Horizons Divine Verdict - Pick 1 by Deco_y Fade into Antiquity Observant Alseid Satyr Rambler Scourgemark Setessan Battle Priest Sip of Hemlock - Pick 2 by Wodar Triton Shorethief Plains Probably the best idea, but they're not doing so hot. Now held by: GureiSeion - Not a lot of help here. I might try a Shipwreck Singer.

1st Time FNM Results

rbd92, 11 years ago

I usually just play magic with my housemates, and I've only ever been to prerelease events at the lgs, so this was my first FNM! Turns out the metagame here is absolutely all aggro so not many favourable match ups for me. Go figure :p Apparently there was only one other control deck at the event.

1-2 against Jund Aggro - Game one my deck went off. Picked away his creatures with removal, dropped Master of Cruelties on turn 5, and turn 6 was removal, attack with the master, Magma Jet, game. Next two I couldn't keep up :p I need to get those Anger of the Gods!

0-2 against Rakdos Aggro - Only drew Doom Blade and Ultimate Price in game one, which don't do anything against cackler, shred-freak, jester, or Exava so that was over quickly! Game 2 kept a hand without a red mana source, bad call. Ugh

2-0 Against RG midrange - I'm already heavily favoured against midrange, and this was made even worse by the fact that the guy was brand new to magic. Let's just say the first thing he tried to do was put down Elvish Mystic, tap if for mana, and put out Experiment One. Nope. Hopefully he didn't get too discouraged though!

0-2 against Rakdos...midrange? - A really damn cool deck, using Tormented Hero Pack Rat, Desecration Demon, Master of Cruelties, and the Hammer of Purphoros, with Mutavault and Rakdos Keyrune for extra damage. Giving the demon and master haste is awesome. I'd like to use the hammer, but don't think I have enough creatures for it. Game one I somehow drew pretty much no removal, and game 2 was even worse (started with no Duress in hand, and then drew literally all 4 in a row. All that did was let me see how I was going to die haha)

All in all I had a lot of fun. I got a lot of compliments on the deck, despite how it did. I'm going to need to adjust this to suit the metagame at my lgs now. Definitely some Anger of the Gods main board, and I'll probably drop AEtherling for now. He's far too slow to safely get out against all the aggro here and was useless every time. Any other advice for facing these types of decks would be greatly appreciated!
