Need some suggestions for cuts —Jan. 13, 2014

Cards I'm looking to put in:

And I'm looking to make some general cuts to the deck so I have room for higher-end cards.

Any suggestions are, as always, welcome and appreciated.

Well, yeah. Really need an infinite color mana combo for this deck.

Found two combos for mana.

Mobilization Mana Echoes Skyshroud Elf (Required)

-or-

Marath, Will of the Wild Mana Echoes Skyshroud Elf (Don't need this, but it filters colorless into red/white)

Having Xenagos, The Reveler in play is super helpful in both situations increasing the ramp tremendously, and serving for as much green as you want when you stop the combo, so for all intensive purposes he adds infinite green to the mix. Combo 1 is infinite red and white, but combo 2 breaks when Marath dies. This problem is cured if you have Cathars' Crusade in play however.

This deck doesn't need infinite mana because it has nothing to dump into except Genesis Wave , which would be really bad if my opponent had a boardwipe in hand...

To my knowledge, there aren't any "XGG: Add X +1/+1 counters to target creature" cards, which would be the best use for it.

Infinite mana is cool, but I don't think it's for every deck.

I could play whatever I want, but if you have infinite mana, you should also be able to win the turn you pull it off :S

Artifact Mutation is a cheap way to put down a few counters (possibly doubled from your enchantments) but also to instantly beef up Champion of Lambholt . Works well with Purphoros, God of the Forge and is a cheap removal spell. I think I might get rid of Llanowar Elves in favor of Wood Elves (to pull out Stomping Ground or Temple Garden ) unless there is a combo there I don't know about. Did you think about putting in Mikaeus, the Lunarch ?

Mikaeus, the Lunarch is good i havent been planning on putting him in my marath deck but let me know how he works out for you... check out my deck to if you want.

Artifact Mutation looks like a great card. Unfortunately, it only hits artifacts, and there aren't much big artifacts that I'm looking to run into (bar Phyrexian Metamorph ). I could theoretically use it with Liquimetal Coating but with only one card to play off of it, it'd be hard. It would be ten times more worth the spot in here if it also hit Enchantments. :/

I really have been considering adding Mikaeus, the Lunarch but I feel like he's kind of slow. Have you guys tested him out? I would really like to know how he plays -- cause that kind of counter recursion is amazing

Skullclamp I have a marath deck and it was the first tech card I thought of. Lol it's good with marath and its good with assemble the legend. You don't mind having your general die so why not kill it once and draw up to six cards with it?

I like Skullclamp . I just have no idea what to take out at this point for replacements.

Ever consider Savageborn Hydra ? Makes a great mana dump

November 12, 2013 2:11 p.m.

Cobthecobbler says... #10

I did, but I felt the general threat level of Primordial Hydra outclassed it for the format, essentially being a deterrent to keep their priorities away from Marath.

It could still be added in addition to Primordial, but I don't know what I would take out. I'm very pressed for what switches need to happen, because I haven't been able to playtest this version of the deck yet :/

Add in Karmic Guide, Saffi Eriksdotter and Ashnod's Altar and/or Phyrexian Altar for sac outlet, reanimation, and OP infinite combo.

Have you thought about Contagion Engine ? It seems like it would be really good here.

How have you found the deck goes when you play multiplayer? I have just started building a deck around Marth and you have given me a few ideas :) would Birthing Pod work?

Primal82 says... #14

Other cards that I have considered as well are Spine of Ish Sah and Restock

November 13, 2013 4:05 a.m.

Cobthecobbler says... #15

Funny you say that, martinkaca -- It's in the prototype build I'm running now. The -1/-1 to all opposing creatures cleared the board for me to swing for game once. That was as far as I got to use it. It definitely fits the bill, though.

Haven't gotten around to a multiplayer game yet -- and you could definitely use pod here if you wanted to. The other two are really eh cards. Spine is good because it's reusable removal, but it comes out really late and against other decks it could be just too slow to help out. If you run that, I'd also throw in some Mana rocks like Thran Dynamo in. Restock is okay, it's really up to you. Neither card is counterproductive or hinders the deck.

How about Wild Beastmaster for a support card? Seems like a great target to dump some counters on and then swing with your army for huge results.

Cobthecobbler says... #17

I really did have it in here before, but I don't know why I took it out.

(Same thing I'm asking everyone with a suggestion) What should I take out for it?

Elven Rite seems a bit lack luster.

Strionic Resonator doesn't work the way you think it does for Marath. For it to work it would have to say. "When Marath, Will of the Wild enters the battlefield, place X +1/+1 counters on it. Where blah blah blah"

Into the Wilds doesn't really do it for me either. It just doesn't do enough to warrant inclusion. Maybe replace it with Primeval Bounty

Also if you wouldn't mind, could you check out my Marath deck and give me some feedback. Its my first EDH deck and it might even give you some ideas for this one.

Marath 2.0

There are a very limited amount of spells that actually place +1/+1 counters on other creatures, unfortunately. I'm not sure if they're necessary here but they do help, I do agree it's a little underwhelming, so I'll think it over.

I know Strionic Resonator doesn't work, I haven't updated the description yet. But even so, the description says I hope it works that way :/ It would be amazing if it did. But it still hits:

...To name a few, I think it still warrants a spot lol.

Into the Wilds I haven't gotten to playtest yet, but it's been on the chop block for a while. I think he'll come out for Beastmaster. Thanks.

I have been doing a bit of tinkering with my deck and I have found that Mirri's Guile to be very helpful especially with Into the Wilds I would keep the Strionic Resonator because it hits half of the stuff you play :) mine is a bit more beast combo though and not so much to do with +1 counters have you thought about adding in Mayael's Aria at all with all those counters you could pull it off quite easily

November 22, 2013 9:33 p.m.

Cobthecobbler says... #21

I don't think Guile warrants a spot in here. Yeah it's a nice effect, but it doesn't do anything unless it has a card like Into the Wilds out. Rearranging the top 3 cards is great, honestly, but I want all my cards to affect the game either the instant they come out, or in the long run.

And I am going to keep the resonator, it hits a lot in here lol.

As for Mayael's Aria , great card. Honestly should be in here. I just had a hard time warranting it when I did have it in here, because it's incredibly way too slow. At most, it takes 20 turns. Probably the easiest way to use this is with Omnath, and that's a little too situational, and still takes a few turns to set up at least.

I don't know, Aria could find its way in here indefinitely, I would love to have it. But I need some reassurance that there are worse cards in the deck already. Any suggestions as to what could come out for the Aria? (Honestly, It's not even that big of a deal adding it, my friend has one I can trade for)

Coat of Arms + Door of Destinies make your little Elemental tokens get pretty big pretty fast.

Also a neat, cheap card in any GW deck is Altar of Bone .

Um, Kalonian Hydra is also obviously amazing for Marath, especially with Primal Vigor or Doubling Season on board.

Cobthecobbler says... #23

Coat of Arms works, I'll have to try and fit that in here.

Kalonian Hydra will be in here once I get one, trust me, I know he should be here.

Altar of Bone is a nice card, I never knew it existed.

Just glancing through your deck list and have a quick question - what purpose does Illusionist's Bracers serve? Unless my understanding of the card is incorrect, wouldn't it only work with Godsire and Nylea, God of the Hunt ?
