This deck is intended to be a midrange- or tempo-oriented take on a Hardened Constrictor deck. The goal is to create a deck that trades aggressiveness for a greater ability to grind than the normal Hardened Scales/Hardened Constrictor lists. The goal of this deck is similar to that of Modern Merfolk, in my estimation; go wide with evasive creatures and then grow them, in this case with +1/+1 counters, to close the game. This plan is backed up with a modest suite of disruption to try and keep an opponent just enough off their game plan to push through 20. The key synergy of the deck is between Good-Fortune Unicorn + Winding Constrictor and the redundant effects of each. (Good-Fortune Unicorn + Hardened Scales , Nissa, Voice of Zendikar + Winding Constrictor , and Hardened Scales + Nissa, Voice of Zendikar .)

To fully lay out some of the synergies that make this deck work: Hardened Scales and Winding Constrictor act to increase the number of counters that are produced by Good-Fortune Unicorn and Nissa, Voice of Zendikar . Hangarback Walker and Walking Ballista are "Hydra" creatures that synergize very well with this plan. Hangarback Walker in particular is a keystone card, as it also works well as a creature that is on both the "go wide" and "go tall" plans. Lingering Souls provides a critical mass of evasive bodies to drop counters on to swing over the top.

I have eschewed the 4x Hangarback Walker / Walking Ballista / Arcbound Ravager package that is currently found in true Hardened Scales Affinity lists and has previously been found in older Hardened Constrictor lists for a more limited artifact package that only uses Walker and Ballista. I have found that, outside of a lethal combo with Ballista, Ravager can be rather underwhelming without more other artifacts to support it, and is one of the reasons I found as to why less Affinity-focused aggro lists lost to themselves. In order for Ravager to work in this version, I would imagine that something along the lines of a 1-drop artifact mana dork would be required, or playing Servo Exhibition in the place of Souls, which I do not find especially palatable.

In the place of the sacrifice/advantage engine of Ravager, the two doctors of the deck, Cabal Therapist and Yawgmoth, Thran Physician , fill in. Yawgmoth is a powerful card that can act as removal, card advantage, and a source of +1/+1 counters if he's allowed to stick. I have found that the token production of this deck is usually high enough that his -1/-1 counter/draw ability can be activated multiple times to serve as hard removal for tougher creatures. Therapist is a card that is underwhelming in the early game, but that in theory can keep your opponent off of important answers in the late game to give you some extra closing time. He's also semi-evasive with Menace, so he benefits from counters slightly more than average.

Dark Confidant and Tireless Tracker are a pair of cards that mostly exist to keep card advantage flowing. Bob has the potential to be sacrificed when he's getting a little too close to homicidal; Tracker might want to be a fourth Souls, but I enjoy having another card advantage creature that can place counters on himself.

Below are other choices that I have considered in place of current cards:

Glint-Sleeve Siphoner + Aether Hub is a consideration in the place of Bob, as Constrictor can double up the energy counters and keep the cards flowing. Menace is also nice from the Siphoners, and there is potential synergy with Oona's Blackguard , another card of interest. However, I have found Siphoner to be a little too inconsistent, as the times that I have found I need card advantage are often the times that I can't really afford to chump-attack with the rogue.

Birds of Paradise in place of Cabal Therapist is appealing, as a 1-3-4 ramp pattern, and in particular turn 2 Unicorn are excellent. However, without as aggressive a goldfish with the traditional Hardened Scales package, I feel that the ramp becomes a somewhat less appealing option. Animation Module is also a consideration in place of Therapist, and is especially good with Unicorn. I have not tested this card much, but I feel as though the card may not be proactive enough on turn 1 and may end up being too win-more when it's turned on. Other proactive 1-drops such as Servant of the Scale are also appealing. There are a wide variety of choices, some of which may end up being better than the Therapist. I will be continuing to experiment.

Ajani, Mentor of Heroes may want to be Ajani, the Greathearted due to the magnitude of life-loss that this deck ends up inflicting on itself. This would also make what is currently the worst Bob flip marginally less painful. However, my reasoning is that nearly all of the deck's important cards, and most of its removal/answers come in the form of creatures and planeswalkers that can be found by big Ajani, and having a planeswalker that can accrue the advantage of an ultimate threat after several turns on board is something that I am trying out. I know that I have liked the Greathearted when I have tried it in the past.

Corpsejack Menace has been a card that I have tried in the past. When it's good, it seems busted, but there are extreme diminishing returns on Scales effects such as this one. On the baseline it's just a 4/4, which doesn't feel especially good when dropped naked on turn 4. Its price makes it to difficult to weave in on other turns, which sometimes just means you either have it sit in hand or effectively take a turn off to cast another Snake/Scales. It's a card I always have on my radar and always wish it had just a slightly higher floor than it does.

I was excited about Nissa, Who Shakes the World until I realized that the lands do not become creatures until after the counters are placed on them, killing any potential for synergy with the Scales effects.

I have also tested Driven / Despair and Song of Freyalise ; I have liked both as ways to lock the game up when the deck is ahead on board, but ultimately I have found that I have struggled to leverage both in situations where the deck falls behind.

In terms of new (Core 2020) cards, based on what has been spoiled thus far:

Woodland Champion has been excellent with the tokens that this deck is able to pump out on a baseline. It makes me want to test Rite of Belzenlok , though that may end up being more cute than good, as the Cleric tokens having no evasion or other relevant text make them difficult to leverage. It also makes me consider Khalni Garden as an alternative to Llanowar Reborn . Llanowar Reborn I think of as a pseudo one drop that enables Snake-goyf on turn 2, while Khalni + Woodland Champion incentivizes playing the Garden later. Ultimately this may make this interaction harder to make good as a synergy within the deck.

Voracious Hydra is a card that I have not been able to decide whether I like enough or not. It seems like it has the potential to be at its best in this deck, but I'm not sure whether it is better on a baseline than Ballista, Dromoka's, or Yawgmoth. It is effectively a 4-drop, and a worse version of Corpsejack Menace , another card that I tested and cut, in the fail cases where it has to be cast on 4 with minimal synergy. Its ceiling is certainly higher, I'm just not sure where it goes in the deck at the moment.

Vivien, Arkbow Ranger may end up being a good replacement for Ajani, Mentor of Heroes. She has largely the same effects as Ajani, with an additional removal ability attached and some slight upside on the counter production ability for a mana cheaper. However, she does not accrue advantage towards an ultimate as Ajani does, would probably require some minor reworking of the sideboard into a wishboard, and the deck is one green land shy of casting her on 4 consistently (based on Frank Karsten's numbers). Definitely a card I will be testing, at least.

Sideboard explanation to be added, though my own choices are pretty heavily based around my local meta.
