Lightning Bolt , Boros Charm , Cerodon Yearling , Glory of Warfare , Boros Reckoner , Lightning Helix and I think there are some mono colored cards that fit in with boros like Hellrider , Silverblade Paladin , Thundermaw Hellkite or even Legion Loyalist I know its not a full 20 and its in no particular order but these are some of my fav cards to use when building a boros deck :)

top of the list:

1: Plateau 2: Arid Mesa 3: Sacred Foundry 4: Wasteland /Strip Mine 5: Rishadan Port

then whatever else... possibly every single other fetch land that could get either a Plateau or Sacred Foundry , lands are very important to an aggro deck, especially if it can reduce the chances of seeing another one later in the game or can keep an opponent off their mana, anything below that would be filled with the many possible one drops, be it creatures or removal, there probably isn't room in a top 20 for anything else beyond that.

@Demarge, i technically a newer player, I don't really understand the importance of fetch lands. And regarding you saying "...Can keep an opponent off their mana,...", Can you give me an example?

Demarge says... #7

an example of keeping an opponent off their mana

turn 1 I play an AEther Vial off of a Strip Mine

turn 2 I put a count on vial, use that to play a Goblin Guide and then I play a 2nd strip mine, I blow up my opponent's first land

On my opponent's turn I blow up their land drop with my 2nd stip mine

result: opponent has no mana while you have a card that pumps out free creatures.

Fetch lands can get the best dual lands, keep a deck randomized, effectively reduces your chances of seeing another land later in the game by removing lands from the deck, and it triggers landfall abilities.

Fetchlands are important because they make sure you get the color/colors you want with your lands. They also thin out your deck, allowing a higher probability that you will draw into a creature. As for keep an opponent off their mana i believe he meant lands that destroy or tap other lands like Wasteland , Strip Mine . Although i dont play much modern i would think Elspeth, Knight-Errant , Lightning Bolt , Lightning Helix , Boros Reckoner , Path to Exile , Goblin Guide would be good for boros.

Deck thinning by fetchlands is pretty much a farce. The rates of which another spell over a land will be drawn is only really visible by like turn 13 or so, and in modern, legacy and vintage that amount of chances will not be seen as you'll win way before that, unless your playing against like a pillow-fort or really heavy control. Also, if you are a pro player, you will thrive on those conditions of getting just a 0.01% chance of getting a spell over a land.

Under normal circumstances, deck-thinning by fetch-lands is false ... but if you have a certain deck, the thinning will be useful. Consider either of these two decks, Coil and Spring and Lost in the Uncharted Realms. Coil requires the deck-thinning due to the massive draw it has, and that low probability is seen much higher as that "turn 13 draw" is really seen at like turn 3 or 4. Draw function and search function (like scry) heavy decks will benefit from deck-thinning. The other is land tutoring, as fetch-lands are basically that, but if you can effectively take 2-3 lands out of your deck a turn, you'll quickly Mana Severance yourself.

As for boros cards ... most have already been said, but Legion's Initiative might be worth considering because of it's anti-wrath effects.

0.01% is still higher than 0%.

But completely worthless to pay $30+ if that is all you are doing it for. Why spend about $120-$280 on fetchlands in a mono-coloured deck with their only purpose being deck-thinning to that 0.01%? I can understand it if you are a professional and you thrive on those conditions ... but other than that, you are just wasting money.

I'm gonna have to agree with Femme_Fatale you're not really thinning anything if you run 4x Arid Mesa and have 22 total lands. It's still a land and doesn't bring you any closer to finding creatures or spells.

But as for the question: Goblin Guide Lightning Bolt Cerodon Yearling Lightning Helix Ajani Vengeant and Boros Charm are some big ones, personal favorites include Firemane Avenger Gisela, Blade of Goldnight and Skyknight Legionnaire

October 16, 2013 3:21 p.m.

But what if in some sort of miracle. I run 4x Terramorphic Expanse ? and if i can pull off this ludicrous plan, i could make Steppe Lynx into a cheap, 4/5 creature on turn 5-9. Is this a viable plan? or is this a Mistform Dreamer 's dream?

October 16, 2013 6:42 p.m.

HarbingerJK says... #14

that's not deck thinning tho, that's a viable strategy to trigger landfall

October 16, 2013 6:46 p.m.

Why not? they're basically the same in terms of fuction. (Except, of course for the plains or mountain and the "pay 1 life" part)

October 16, 2013 6:50 p.m.

HarbingerJK says... #16

I mean you could say that, all I'm saying is that adding fetch lands for deck thinning is kinda pointless if you ask me, but adding them to trigger landfall is awesome. Admittedly I have used Evolving Wilds in the stead of shock lands to save money

October 16, 2013 6:55 p.m.

I guess so, if you were playing a Modern-format Zendikar Landfall deck, that would be an integral part i assume.

October 16, 2013 7:07 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #18

You could also use fetch lands or the ETBT fetches as a shuffle mechanic, which is very important for things like Sylvan Library , Scroll Rack and Sensei's Divining Top .

HarbingerJK says... #19

oh yeah, just imagine how beautiful it is to have 4 Evolving Wilds on the field with a Baloth Woodcrasher ; )

October 16, 2013 7:10 p.m.

Man, you would just BASH them into oblivion!

yup lol and if you also have Bellowing Tanglewurm ... <: o

If I recall, this thread is supposed to be about the top 20 Boros cards -- not fetchlands. Shame on the one who derailed a perfectly viable thread concept into something that could be copy-pasted into any Modern deckbuilding thread and be relevant in almost none of them.

In any case, what the best Boros cards are will vary depending on how, exactly, you want to run red and white together. Perhaps your deck has no place for Balefire Liege -- but that doesn't mean it's not an excellent card under the right circumstances. Firemane Avenger is often overlooked for its lack of ETB effect and haste, but it's a Lightning Helix engine that'll trigger twice if you have Aurelia, the Warleader out. Wojek Halberdiers is a 3/2 for 2 CMC, which is already excellent, and Truefire Paladin is a place to sink your mana later in the game if you have nothing to curve into.

For my money, most of the more versatile Boros cards have already been mentioned. So I'll just throw Vexing Devil and Browbeat out there. To play them, you have to accept that you won't always get the outcome you want. That said, they always give your opponent the option of either taking damage or providing you with lots of resources for cheap. These cards can be run alongside the likes of Lightning Helix and Boros Reckoner to put a lot of pressure on an opponent's life total quickly, often allowing you to finish a game with a direct burn -- especially something like Devil's Play .

October 17, 2013 8:04 a.m.

Huh, i was think of maybe, Aggro? What is the best is Boros's best type? Aggro? Lifegain?

@Trollhoffer clearly you've never been on a forum thread before, I've seen these things derail after the first comment

Trollhoffer says... #25

HarbingerJK:

That's true, but this particular derail was as tactless as they come.

October 17, 2013 8:56 p.m.

HarbingerJK says... #26

lol one time I posted a thread asking people what they thought were the best sets in Modern, and I happened to mention that I wasn't a big fan of Avacyn Restored and then the first comments weren't opinions on what sets were good in Modern but were just defending the Innistrad block lol that's pretty tactless

and see we've derailed once again ; p

The importance of fetchlands isn't really in deck thinning, but instead in the ability to filter mana for 3-color decks and fill the graveyard.

Arid Mesa allows you to play stuff like Grim Lavamancer (and even Deathrite Shaman if you're splashing black), due to the graveyard becoming populated rather quickly.

They're good to have around as a rule, but it won't affect your performance noticeably until you start splashing into 3 or 4 color lists or start mucking around with Landfall Aggro. Mana FIXING is where these cards shine; otherwise, Arid Mesa is just a glorified Sacred Foundry with a gimmick.

SharadSun says... #28

Also, as for the ACTUAL subject, it depends on what kind of aggro.

Standard Landfall Blitz:

Steppe Lynx

Goblin Guide

Grim Lavamancer

Plated Geopede

Keldon Marauders

Lightning Bolt

Lightning Helix

Path to Exile

Magma Jet

Searing Blaze

AEther Vial

Blood Moon / Magus of the Moon

Ghitu Encampment

Arid Mesa + Ghost Quarter + Flagstones of Trokair

Imposing Sovereign / Blind Obedience (my personal choice)

Spark Trooper (another personal gimmick)

Aggro/Control Variant:

Boros Reckoner

Warleader's Helix

Nevermore (perfect on-curve multi-use hoser)

Ajani Vengeant (absolute HOUSE)

Basilisk Collar

Batterskull (ubiquitous, really)
