Doomsday Specter

Creature — Specter

Flying

When Doomsday Specter enters the battlefield, return a blue or black creature you control to its owner's hand.

Whenever Doomsday Specter deals combat damage to a player, look at that player's hand and choose a card from it. The player discards that card.

@mortifolkmurphcaster: Hi, thanks for commenting and first of all: sorry for me taking so long to answer you. I'm not that active on tappedout anymore and only saw your comment today.

I'm glad you liked my deck and found some inspiration for your own. The deck evolved quite a bit over time and the deck description isn't up to date anymore (the decklist is almost up to date though). So before answering your questions I might make a few remarks about my deck in its current state:

I discarded a lot of the cooler but clunkier cards, that initially gave rise to the deck, like Head Games , Jester's Mask , Ghastlord of Fugue , Seer's Vision and Mindleech Mass , because they just weren't doing anything useful in most games, especially when I was already behind.

Two of the cards that stayed in and that are crucial for where the deck is now are Silent-Blade Oni and Doomsday Specter . Because both of those cards work well with small creatures that have etb effects I decided to create this really creature heavy build. But maybe there are better ways of building the deck and especially Doomsday Specter can be quite disappointing sometimes.

I can also say that I seldomly find myself casting Sen Triplets but I don't know if this is because of my play mistakes or because of the triplets drawing too much hate. I recently added Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage to help Sen Triplets get down (one can also use Shimmer Myr ). When I win games, I most often do so because of a Bribery after a long and exhausting attrition war or something like that. Unfortunately I wasn't able to pull off an infinite combo win that used the cards of my opponents yet.

I didn't know about Thrull Surgeon and Pilfering Imp . Thanks for the suggestions! I will not include them in the current build because it does not play enough from the graveyard to recur them regularly. I focus on creatures that have an etb effect, and then I bounce them back to my hand.

Windfall effects in combination with cards like Narset, Parter of Veils are brutal and, although I do not shy at treating my playgroup like that, I would not include them because I see a nombo between effects that give everyone 7 fresh cards and my strategy of casting/discarding the opponents cards. My deck does not play out cards that fast which is reinforced by the fact that I sometimes play the opponents cards instead of mine with Sen Triplets . So Windfall would likely help the opponents more than it helps me. While it is good as a combo with Narset, Parter of Veils and Notion Thief , on its own it doesn't fit into the overall deck strategy that well. But maybe one could trim down the mana curve a bit more and then all the small creatures in combination with windfall effects and Notion Thief could be strong, but I'm not quite sure.

Ok, I think that's all for now. Again, thanks for your comment!

Mindleech Mass was in here, but during testing I just never really wanted to cast it. Shimian Specter is good if I run into an Athreos, God of Passage + Shadowborn Apostle deck (it was everywhere after the Command Zone episode and it was driving me insane. Luckily the deck has died down now). Doomsday Specter sounds interesting, and I love Kheru Mind-Eater. Glasses of Urza could be interesting, it would allow me to see if I wanted a certain opponent to discard their hand.

It's all good, I just remind people because I've posted and haven't been commented on before. I totally understand, I've done it too.

I've been on the fence about It That Betrays for a while, but Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire cannot be in the deck due to the green symbol in its mana cost.

Thanks for letting me know about Last Word in the land slot, I have no idea how it happened and probably wouldn't have noticed.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! You've given me a lot to think about (and thanks for not saying anything about Dragon Tempest, it gets annoying have to explain why that is in here sometimes)!

Hey, I play a similar deck in esper that tries to control the opponent's hands. Some cards I play in it are: Silent-Blade Oni, Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni, Mindleech Mass, Ghastlord of Fugue, Shimian Specter, Doomsday Specter, Kheru Mind-Eater, Rootwater Thief, Head Games and Glasses of Urza. Maybe some of those cards would also work in your deck. Also Mindclaw Shaman.

Hi, fellow sen triplets player!

Here are some suggestions for your deck:

  • Sen Triplets draw so much hate that I'd advise you to put Winding Canyons in. This way you can flash the triplets in at the end of your opponents turn, so they don't have to survive one whole turn cause they almost never do

  • I do not play Mycosynth Lattice and Celestial Dawn because they take up two card slots. Instead I built my landbase in a way that it can produce two or three mana of any color more or less reliably in the lategame (with City of Brass, Rupture Spire, etc.)

  • Baleful Strix and Grand Arbiter Augustin IV are good creatures for esper. The arbiter reduces Sen Triplets cost by 2

  • I made the experience that Telepathy draws a lot of hate, too. People hate it to play with their hands revealed for the whole time. It creates an unpleasant game experience and often makes you a target. Instead I'd recommend Glasses of Urza. It does not make all of your opponents angry at you and additionaly it can be searched with Trinket Mage which makes your deck more consistent. And it can be searched with Tezzeret the Seeker whom you should add as well

  • my own deck is more creature focused and without combos. I really like cards like Silent-Blade Oni or Doomsday Specter there, but you probably do not run enough creatures to warrant their inclusion

  • if you're willing to go the more expensive route you should add Demonic Tutor and Vampiric Tutor. Enlightened Tutor and Diabolic Tutor could leave for them

That's all for now. Let me know what you think!

The other changes I can recall were more ironing out the wrinkles:

+Sphinx Ambassador, -Lord of the Void. Both are big fliers that play cards from opponents decks but the sphinx was more interactive and hence entertaining.

-Blazing Specter, -Doomsday Specter, -Scythe Specter, +misc utility. The specter suite swapped out for. Lot of things over time, but I think I utilmately changed them to NB God Pharoh, Torment of Hailfire and Hour of Devastation. I later cut hour of devastation for Zealous Conscripts, and then later changed it to a Baleful Strix to help get more draw.

How about Cavern Harpy and Doomsday Specter for some sweet synergy. Upon entry they let you bounce a ninja, and they have evasion, so you can more easily ninjitsu using them. Keymaster Rogue is good for the same reasons.

If it's not too much "off-theme", you could use Coat of Arms. Also: Mind Twist, Silent Specter, Cabal Coffers, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Treasure Cruise, Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, Hymn to Tourach, Stupor, Shimian Specter, Nightveil Specter, Hypnotic Specter, Doomsday Specter, Blizzard Specter, Ghastlord of Fugue, Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver, Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur and Scepter of Fugue.

Although, I knok a lot of my suggestions are not part of the rogue theme. But if you're in the line of making your opponent discard his/her hand, they are quite good.
