Agonizing Demise

Agonizing Demise

Kicker (1)(Red) (You may pay an additional (1)(Red) as you play this spell.)

Destroy target nonblack creature. It can't be regenerated. If the kicker cost was paid, Agonizing Demise deals damage equal to that creature's power to the creature's controller.

Agonizing Demise Discussion

I love it! Have you thought of Arcbond, Delirium, Backlash, Traitor's Roar, Souls of the Faultless, or Boros Fury-Shield?

My favorite are the three that skip damage prevention and redirect instead. Thereby allowing your opponents to take lethal commander damage from their own commander. Although that is a rare occurrence unless you pump their creatures first. Reflect Damage, Mirror Strike & Glarecaster.

Some other interesting cards with similar effects Selfless Squire, Agonizing Demise, Shriveling Rot, Eye for an Eye & Harsh Justice.

I love these effects so much that the first deck I built ended up being split into 3. Each emphasizing different mechanics The bigger they are, the better they fall damage and spell doubling with Deflecting Palm, The Game of Houses (Daes Dae'mar) a more political redirection where I work on building up my opponents creatures and trying to take them out with commander damage from their own commanders, and a Stuffy creature based one with Feather at the helm which I just realized I never added to tapped out. Check them out if you'd like!

enpc on 5-color Pauper EDH deck help. …

In the past my wife and I have built both Paragon of the Amesha (enchantment voltron) and Dragonsoul Knight (infect voltron) as pauper EDH lists.

The benefit that both of them have compared to Worldheart Phoenix is that you can just dump a bunch of ramp into the list and you have a built in mana sink win condition in your commander.

Any I'm pretty sure that my wife's Dragonsoul Knight list was played against a bunch of casual EDH lists and stomped on them (basically the same situation you're in).

As for good cards - I got a lot of value out of kicker cards. They do something by themselves but you can also get more value late game. Citanul Woodreaders and Dismantling Blow are both decent sources of card draw. You also have Blink of an Eye and Into the Roil for pseudo removal/draw. Agonizing Demise is decent creature removal.

Freakjob on Queen Marchesa: Politics, Aikido, and Control

Hey there, love the deck, had it on my watch list for ages now.

I'm in love with this interaction and wanted to get your thoughts on it: Repercussion and utilizing damage-based sweepers such as Incite Rebellion and Blasphemous Act . Seems like a perfect way to turn an enemy's strength into a weakness. I know you don't like wraths, but this would be a win condition similar to Rakdos Charm. Obviously the deck needs to be lighter on creatures than your opponents' decks, and might be a little too cute, but if you're already encouraging combat between your opponents' creatures, this would help speed up the clock.

On a related note, I'm curious how you draw the line between damage redirecting rattlesnakes such as Stuffy Doll , Spitemare , Mogg Maniac , and Truefire Captain , compared to cards such as Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs and Marchesa's deathtouch? I read your comment where you say opponents have to attack you to get Stuffy Doll to work, but by having a clear, "you know exactly what will happen to you if you attack me," card laid out, much like Master of Cruelties, people should choose to attack elsewhere, therefore fulfilling its purpose as a rattlesnake; what's the difference?

Also wanted to bring up a few cards I haven't seen you or anyone else discuss:

Outmaneuver - found this while digging, and it looks HILARIOUS. Use on an opponent's attack against someone else to turn a blocked attack into a slaughter.

Similarly, because I love infect, Tainted Strike to turn a painful attack into an unexpected lethal one. Again, usable on an opponent's creature, your own Gisela, or a Sunforgered+Boros Charmed anything.

Traitor's Roar - expensive CMC, not an instant, but, another option for anti-tall tech, and can be conspired for even more massive damage. Not great, just wanted to mention it. In a similar vein, Agonizing Demise .

Searing Rays - another I found and just wanted to mention, since it's not great. Almost always going to be a worse Stronghold Discipline , but one mana cheaper, and useful for a mono-color heavy meta (Elves, etc.)

Lastly, because it's so beautifully perfect for an Aikido deck in art, flavor, effect, flavor text, everything: Turn the Tables . Just look at that art; the casual and hilarious smackdown! Read that flavor text; confident as hell! I know, 5 CMC is a lot to hold up, but I love it too much, picked one up in foil. I'm sure you can appreciate it, even if you'd never run it.

Shame you changed to such a drastically different meta; I've read what kind of decks you face now, and those are certainly trickier to "Aikido" around to victory. My meta is much more creature-combat focused, so I'm looking forward to something along your initial lines!

Again, great deck!

Not sure how I missed it, but Agonizing Demise definitely doesn't work in this deck. It's been taken out.

@ticked-off-squirrel: Ah, you're right. As you said, in your example it's not dealing damage, but there are some examples (some of which I played myself very enthusiastically, such as Agonizing Demise).

Whether it's lethal damage or a destroy effect destroying the creature actually makes a difference, which is something I initially overlooked and koylucumert therefore might be interested in: For example, if you're at 2 life, control an Exquisite Archangel and your opponent casts Cinder Cloud, your Angel will be destroyed (as in put in the graveyard by the effect, not by SBAs), then deal 5 damage to you. There is no Angel on the battlefield anymore at the time the damage is dealt, so it's replacement effect won't work and you will end up at -3 life.

this was the first link that popped up on a google search for Pauper EDH staples. this is a great list! I used it to tone my very small but high quality collection.
