TypicalTimmy Why is Toshiro Umezawa a color pie break, just because he's a good guy? can be supportive, helpful, and even generous, as long as they stand to benefit from it somehow. The "good" side of will encourage others to improve--after all, there's no point in demonstrating your value, power, and general amazingness to people who don't represent any sort of challenge or threat, and having a good rival to push you even harder is a good thing. The philosophy of isn't just cynical selfishness, or pointless death and torture, or making one-sided contracts with demons. can absolutely believe that the world can be improved, and that they have (or can get) the skill and knowledge to improve it. If they gain everyone's adoration in the process of becoming more capable and powerful, that's just one of the perks.

Also, I don't think new players will encounter severe breaks in high enough volume to become convinced that they are normal. If for some reason they're learning the game by themselves without someone helping them, the non-breaks hugely outnumber the fuzzy breaks, which hugely outnumber the obvious breaks. So they might get the wrong idea for a few days, or weeks if they're especially isolated, but the truth should become clear over time. It's theoretically possible that someone's first exposure to the game is Control Gruul with Lifeforce, Glacial Crevasses, AEther Membrane, and Windreaper Falcon, but I don't think that's especially likely in practice.

As a separate thought on color breaks, and related to the point about Amonkhet Zombies, it's currently possible to make a functional Boros Vampire decks, and a Jeskai Zombie deck, and Dimir Elves. None of the individual cards are breaks, but in a carefully curated aggregate, it's possible to reinterpret almost any color mechanically and thematically.

I'm not a hardliner on breaks. I believe that the limitations and weaknesses of colors should be closer to "the color can do this rarely and inefficiently" instead of "the color can never do this." Anyone can get rid of anything at instant speed for - or draw a card and gain life for . While these cards wouldn't make sense being printed directly into or , respectively, they do allow those colors access to those effects at common.

Royal Assassin not a blocker but stops fatty from swinging
Every creature is an amazing blocker when you have Vigor on the battle field
Also Tuktuk the Explorer , and Reef Worm makes them think twice
my favorite is AEther Membrane I know you said no defender but it's still worth mentioning

You are correct. If something doesn't say "target" then it doesn't target. This is true of AEther Membrane , and even cards that do pick a specific permanent without targeting it like Clone . Targeting is discussed by Rule 115 in the Comprehensive Rules, and Rule 115.10 discusses situations like this where something is affected without targeting it. The relevant rules are listed below:

115.10a Just because an object or player is being affected by a spell or ability doesn’t make that object or player a target of that spell or ability. Unless that object or player is identified by the word “target”in the text of that spell or ability, or the rule for that keyword ability, it’s not a target.

115.10b In particular, the word “you”in an object’s text doesn’t indicate a target.

Notably, some keyword abilities can target without using the word, like "enchant creature" being shorthand for "this spell enters the battlefield attached to target creature." However, that's not the case here.

My opponent attacked with an Angel of Destiny that was made hexproof. I blocked with AEther Membrane . I have been told in the past when dealing with Hexproof that "If it doesn't use the word 'target' it isn't a target ability." But neither I nor my opponent could find that specific phrasing in any rules to back that up. Additionally, without having that phrasing to back me up, the sentiment that "well it seems pretty target-y to me seeing how it says 'a creature' rather than just referencing creatures that it blocks in general" held significantly more water. In retrospect it doesn't seem any more like a target ability than say deathtouch but what do you think?

As far as cuts, the cards I have my eye on are Forgotten Creation, Izzet Keyrune, Sphinx's Tutelage, Deepfathom Skulker, Favorable Winds, Gravitational Shift, AEther Membrane, Mask of Avacyn, Faithless Looting, and perhaps two or three of the "discard hand, draw that many"--particularly expensive ones. I like Jace's Archivist for being repeatable.

Liking what I see so far! Maybe replace a Guard Gomazoa with AEther Membrane ? Still a big wall to defend yourself and can put things back in opponent's hands, then force the discard.

Here's my Nekusar deck if you want to look for inspiration.

This is a tricky one, I would seriously consider splashing a third color for access to cards that fetch artifacts like Fabricate but the mana fixing becomes a serious issue. I would happily drop AEther Membrane to do this but a three color deck just sounds inherently unreliable in terms of mana.

I mainly wanted to try to build around Isochron Scepter and my thoughts other than straight burn would be Doom Blade , Geth's Verdict , Mana Leak , Angelsong , Assassin's Trophy , Bile Blight , Commencement of Festivities , Dampen Thought , Dash Hopes , Deflecting Palm , Essence Scatter , Feed the Clan , Growth Spiral , Heroes' Reunion , Increasing Vengeance , Nourish , Raise the Alarm , Redirect , Solidarity of Heroes , Turn to Frog , Twincast , Veil of Secrecy , Whitesun's Passage .

I don't know, it just seems like the scepter could be a really awesome addition to a lot of decks but you would want the scepter plus a fetch for it as well.
