Land Decisions

Raedan, 8 years ago

If you had the money you could easily swap out some of the lands in this deck for more consistent dual lands. Just be careful of the price of progress. It could really come back to bite you. I may cut down the number of non basics as well. On the subject of Price of Progress, It is a two drop spell that can deal a massive amount of damage late game if you play against powerful decks. In my meta I see 3 non basic for every basic land on the board.

Hour of Devastation update

Citridon, 8 years ago

Haven't updated this one in a while. So we'll be playing a little catch up.

-1 Realm Seekers, +1 Draining Whelk or Scatter tonthe Winds - Realm Seekers was kind of a holdover from progenitus helming the deck. With him gone, we're not really trying to ramp after untapping with 6 mana. Then seekers just becomes a large body based on our opponents play. Whelk can do that, has flying, and gives us some stack interaction.

-1 Obsessive Skinner, +1 Winding Constrictor - Just a far more powerful effect, even if casting it is rougher

-1 Seek the Horizon, +1 Hour of Promise - a little more expensive, but it can hit nonbasics. Seek was in here over explosive veggies because it found 3 colors instead of 2. Non-basics let Hour find all 5 if needed (khans/alara trilands or mana confluence. It can also find 2 manlands to do fixing and get us bodies. If this card sticks around, I may invest in some shocks to make room for a few utility lands or even enough deserts to get zombies.

-1 Tuskguard Captain, +1 Rishkar, Peema Renegade - Tuskguard is a duplicate effect of Bramblewood paragon, and double trample does nothing. Rishkar both does immediate pumps and adds more mana fixing early

-1 Loreseeker's Stone, +1 Ajani, Valiant Protector - By the time you could untap and use loreseeker's stone, Ajani will have gotten 2 cards with his +1. And 2 creatures in this deck >= 3 random cards. His other 2 modes are also both relevant, but he'll mostly be getting me cards

changings HoD set out

Blo, 8 years ago

So, Hour of Devastation gave us some new toys, which I'm more than happy to try out. I also traded some pieces and finally got my devoted druid, so I can combo out once in a while, I added cycle lands to prevent flooding and slightly faster spells, instead of the previous artifacts, which were often too slow or mana heavy.

In:
Devoted Druid
Ifnir Deadlands
Desert of the Indomitable
Desert of the Glorified
Torment of Venom
Driven / Despair
Bontu the Glorified
Seal of Primordium
Banewhip Punisher

Out:
Contagion Clasp
Trigon of Corruption
Serrated Arrows
Flesh-Eater Imp
Glistening Oil
Viridian Longbow
Plaguemaw Beast
Mortuary Mire
Forest
Swamp

Updated deck breakdown and minor swaps

pphhaazzee, 8 years ago

Full breakdown of deck is up to date with cards in use! Added - Sword of Kaldra

Removed (moved to sideboard) - Hellkite Tyrant

Tyrant uses are limited in non artifact matches so I dropped in favor of removal on large threats normally out of Bosh range.

+4 In Oketra's Name

This card seems really potent in this deck so I'm testing it out as a sideboard option

Deck Clean-up

TauralCW, 8 years ago

It's been a while since I really sat down an looked at the cards in this deck and upon finally doing so I've made some hard cuts.

It has sort of been split between two paths through the last updates, shifting more and more towards a 'fort' type deck, but still keeping enough other cards to not actually take advantage of that strategy. This update has pushed even further to remove a lot of the blue spells and replace them with white enchantments.

I still feel there is a place for See Beyond. The ability to get things out of your hand that would otherwise be stuck there and also dig for Enduring Ideal or lands is pretty useful so for now it stays.

Pentad Prism is now out so solely relying on Lotus Bloom for red mana if we need it. And also the suite of counterspells and Supreme Verdict. This has switched to spell denial/tax or greater tax on creature attacks, such as Suppression Field, 4x Ghostly Prison and Runed Halo.

It probably wont work, but the deck now has stronger identity so for now it's worth a try.

Super Huge Update

DudelRok, 8 years ago

Have been updating and making changes to Maelstrom for some time, only recently getting around to updating my decks online. Too many changes to list, and many I do not even remember. I wiped the old list and put in the new one straight up. XD

After the big tournament

-eDu-, 8 years ago

Finished 3-1 at the Duel Commander Tournament at Lima (Perú) with the previous list. Changes: With the meta shifting more towards 3-4 colors and further from mono red, I decided to let Magus of the Moon back in. Pull from tomorrow is a sweet card but kinda win more and redundant with Nin. Changed Mutavault for Mishra's Factory because artifact destruction is low at the moment and the 3/3 blocker seems more relevant. This is the list I will play at the Top8 of the Duel Commander League.

Hour of Devastation Considerations

precociousapprentice, 8 years ago

Cards that may make an appearance from Hour of Devastation include: Bontu's Last Reckoning - A cheaper Damnation with a downside that you may be able to play around. Will be tested, at least in the Wishboard. Oketra's Last Mercy - Similar use to Reverse the Sands, only cheaper, and potentially slightly different impact on the game. Will be tested in the Wishboard. A high likelihood of inclusion. Torment of Hailfire - Wincon that could replace Exsanguinate. Will be tested in the Wishboard. This and Oketra's Last Mercy are the most likely includes. Hour of Revalation - Sweeper that could take the place of Austere Command. Will be tested in the Wishboard. Overall, nothing that I see that will likely replace a maindeck card, but potential cards for the Wishboard that are worth trialling.

(0.0.1) Better Lands, Better Digging and more

ClockGear, 8 years ago

I replaced the Meandering Rivers with Prairie Streams as I thought that was the best U/W land for this deck. Secondly I removed 3x Glimmer of Genius in favor of 2 extra Anticipates and 1 Strategic Planning since Glimmer of Genius is a bit too slow. Finally in the sideboard I swapped out 2x Turn Aside for 2x Planar Outburst since enchantment removal isn't all that present in sideboards at the moment and the deck could use some more boardwipes vs the aggro matches.

vortical42, 8 years ago

Big Thumbs up to Tiemuu and the rest of the folks over at MTGSalvation for helping me turn my Janky mess into something playable. Still a lot of testing to be done, but I'm getting closer to a polished list. Sadly, Kefnet and Walking Ballista have failed to make the cut for this deck. They are strong cards, but just too slow for what they provide. Taking their place are a play-set of Inspiring Statuary and all the crazy Innovate shennanigans that come with it.

With Statuary back in the deck, Baraal's Expertise has gone from being meh sideboard filler, to a maindeck staple. Being able to cheat out a statue or a aetherflux is insanely good, especially vs control. Currently only running 2, but I may try bumping up to three at some point.

Complete Change

MartialArt, 8 years ago

After giving it some thought I will change this deck completely and add red to get access to more land destruction and nonbasic disruption. I will cut down the lands-don't-untap effects and focus more on destroying lands. This deck will most likely change to blue-red.

3-1

dino268, 8 years ago

Went 3-1 last Friday. Only loss was to GW counters played by one of the best players at my LGS. In fact that was my only losses. I beat everyone else 2-0. Looking forward to adding some new HOU cards next week to see how that goes. Excited about having Abrade in the mainboard. I will probably run this deck until the late September rotation.

Fine Tuning and efficiency

malloggio, 8 years ago

Hello, this is my last evolution of the deck trying to make it more efficient. As usual any comment will be really appreciated here. Details Exploration ---> Polukranos, World Eater (more AGGRO/RAMP flavor to the deck) Skyshroud Claim --> Explosive Vegetation (EFFICIENTY) Wall of Root --> Edge of Autumn (EFFICIENTY) Defensive Grid --> Eyes of Wisent (EFFICIENTY) Next Goal is to try to include in the list Scavenger Grounds Ramunap Excavator Tree Visit I'd like to receive ideas on the cards to be excluded. The idea is to increase efficiency and to keep the deck as AGGRO as possible. I'm open mind to sacrifice another creature for the land but I'd like not to pass the 42 land number.
