Heya tobi89! Thanks so much for the comment, this totally made my day! Skyshroud Cutter is brilliant, I don't know how I missed it when looking through all the common beasts but this is legit a perfect card for us. I checked out your version of the list, the only thing I'm not too sure about Winding Way over LtS because winding away the Rites of Initiation to gy can be pretty catastrophic for the deck. But otherwise I like the changes, I've actually been playing around with 2 copies of Rites as well to make it more likely to be able to go off "half-cocked" and still cast Rites for say +5 and get a cheeky kill even if not able to fully combo and draw the deck. I'm definitely going to pick this back up and slot the cutters in. Thanks for the interest and suggestion!

Yes, but only at the level and format(s) you choose to play. A casual kitchen table player gains experience and knowledge but it only translates to further kitchen table games at the same skill level. The same is true for Modern, EDH, cEDH, Pauper, etc.

Is something like Traumatize too slow for you? The idea is you'd usually target yourself to feed your Commander, but you could always pick on an opponent instead. I also like Mesmeric Orb, you don't suffer as much as other people from the effects of serious mill.

I don't know if it's too mean for your meta, but Rakdos decks tend to get frustrated if they've built around their Commander and you use something like Imprisoned in the Moon or Oubliette on them. The best part, if they do random into (or even tutor for) Feed the Swarm you can just recast on your next turn since it should be in your graveyard.

Hi guys and thanks for stopping by, I really appreciate.

theNeroTurtle also thank you for the upvote! However about the ruling I think you're incorrect. A non-creature permanent (such as a land) can have +1/+1 counters placed on it. For it to become a creature it will need more actions. For example _Earthbending_as Crow_Umbra says. Other options I have in my deck are cards like Nissa, Vital Force and Sylvan Awakening and of course there are lands that can animate itself such as one of my wincons Inkmoth Nexus. All those animated lands have a certain base power and toughness, and will have a number of +1/+1 counters on top of that!

Thank you for the clarification Neotrup. I had a similar-ish scenario with Agate Instigator in a game a few months ago.

Neotrup on Does Roaming Throne double offspring …

This answer is almost correct, but the offspring aren't both able to see eachother. Offspring will trigger twice, so the first trigger will resolve creating a token, triggering the original twice. Once both of these new triggers resolve the other offspring trigger will resolve, triggering the original and the first kid twice each. The end result is 6 damage, as the first kid saw the second, but the second kid did not see the first. This is different from Immortal Servitude because in that case both creatures would enter at the same time, but with two offspring triggers they'll resolve on at a time.

Crow_Umbra on Does Roaming Throne double offspring …

Damage wise:

  • Parent Agate enters, and Offspring cost was paid, creating an additional Offspring token from Roaming Throne.

  • Two Offspring tokens ETB. Parent "sees" 2 tokens enter and triggers for 1 damage each, plus the additional triggers from Throne for a total of 4 damage.

  • Two Offspring "see" each other enter for 2 damage each off the additional Throne trigger = 4 damage, for a total 8 ETB damage this turn.

Stuff like Panharmonicon would also give you additional Offspring tokens since they are created when the Parent enters after paying the cost, as well as additional ETB damage triggers.

Crow_Umbra on Does Roaming Throne double offspring …

Hi there, to answer the various parts of your question:

  • Since Offspring triggers when the creature enters (if the Offspring cost was paid), you will create an additional token, since Roaming Throne will make it trigger an additional time, including the Enters damage trigger.

  • This article can help detail a bit more regarding the simultaneous Enters triggers for the Offspring copies, but TL:DR - They will see each other enter.

The example laid out in the article-

"Let’s be casting Immortal Servitude for X=1, and we’re yanking four copies each of Soul Warden and Soul's Attendant. Each of those 8 creatures 'sees' the other 7 enter alongside it… and in this case, trigger appropriately. So for each Warden, you have 3 triggers from other Wardens, and 4 triggers from the Attendants. And for each Attendant, you have 3 triggers for the other Attendants, and 4 triggers for the Wardens. That’s 56 triggers gaining you 1 life each"

So your Offspring will see each other enter, and each also have their Enters damage trigger go off again thanks to Roaming Throne.

If I have a Roaming Throne out with "Lizards" as its chosen type, and I play an Agate Instigator with its offspring cost, do I get two 'baby' instigators?

And if I do, will the babies see each other enter and each trigger twice? Or do I only get the EtB triggers from the 'parent' instigator?

Yes, but only to a certain degree.

Certainly, playing a sport such as basketball, soccer, hockey, etc. will make you better at that sport, but it is only with specific, focused, training that you can really exceptionally improve.

Magic the Gathering, or really any game, is the same. Yes, simply playing will help you improve, but this improvement will be limited, and potentially slow, without focused "training." For MTG this is going to be reading articles about the game, optimization, strategy, etc.

theNeroTurtle, are you saying that lands with +1/+1 counters on them become creatures once the counter is placed on them?

I don't think that's the case. The lands can hold those counters, but don't have a power or toughness imposed on them. They still need a secondary effect like Earthbend to turn them into a creature.

just in case you weren't already aware, which I am sure you are... A land with those type of counters is a creature. And at that point is subject to creature effects such as board wipes. Also, the official rule now is that all lands that are creatures must be placed on the battlefield zone while it is a creature.

I really like this build. 1+

I would like to reinforce what everyone is saying here by paraphrasing how Bruce Lee once said how he would rather practice one kick 10,000 times than 10,000 kicks once. While he's right to about the 10,000 kicks, if all you practice is the one kick, all it will take is an opponent's one well timed dive or grabbing of the leg to open you up to a strike to the tender spot. A better, but not perfect approach is to practice ten different punches, ten different kicks and five grappling techniques 400 times each.

I'll add on to that by saying how you can have years of experience and skill and it won't stop you from overthinking an issue to the point a newb shows you up. And neither will mean anything if you don't maintain the basics and develop an outside the box approach.

First Question: Thurid triggers once per creature spell if that spell fulfills the binary condition of being a horse, pegasus or unicorn. Multiple of these types don't create additional triggers. It would be something else if Thurid had three seperate triggered abilities, one for each kind of horse.

Second one: Changelings are all creature types at all times, so Thurid definitely triggers off of you casting a changeling.

I found out I was wrong - Klauth, Unrivaled Ancientfoil isn't as ideal for Ragga as I had thought. It doesn't count as a mana creature, so doesn't get the +2/+2 bonus. Still a solid, hasty, evasive, mana-friendly 7CMC creature to include, but mildly disappointing that it's classified outside the 'mana creature; category.

Let's say Thurid, Mare of Destiny and effect that gives creature cards I own additional types like Maskwood Nexus. I play a creature card, how many copies would I make? I feel like it just once, but I want to make sure?

Bonus question: Would Thurid, Mare of Destiny's copy ability work with creatures with changeling like Irregular Cohort? I'm under the assumption that it won't work since it is not one of the three accepted creature types until after the spell resolves.

theNeroTurtle Objectively, I should. I've had it in here before but 2+ GAAIV on the field is more disruptive to my friends even playing the game than I'm comfortable with. I added it to the maybeboard more to avoid it as a suggestion honestly.

I realize the irony of me being comfortable with 2+ Elesh Norn, but unlike GAAIV, Elesh in multiples almost always ends games immediately rather than dragging them out.

Thank you though!

SaberTech on Does Experience in the Game …

I'm in agreement with the sentiments above. The years playing MtG doesn't necessarily correlate in equal measure with growth in skill.

That's not to say that playing for a long time doesn't bring improvement though. The longer you play the more cards, combos, and game actions you'll have seen. That's all learning experience that you can pull from to help you find ways to win a game.

Competitive play pushes you to learn game play and deck building concepts in a much more thorough manner than casual play does though. You need every edge you can get to win in a competitive environment. You'll learn more about concepts like:

  • How to better evaluate which cards are the strongest and most efficient options for your deck.
  • How to get the most out of every card slot in your deck.
  • How to improvise and stretch the most benefit out of the cards in your hand.
  • How to arrange your plays to improve your tempo.
  • Which strategies are stronger than others.
  • How to read your opponent's plays to anticipate what their next play might be or what cards might be in their hand.
  • Weird rule interactions and how to research the meta.

Casual play lets you skate by without needing to learn things quite as quickly or thoroughly. When people are just playing with random stuff that they want to test out there isn't as much drive to find the most efficient way to do things. People are more focused on what they find fun.

An issue with commander being one of the main entry point for casual play these days is that the politicking and multiplayer nature of the format can cause new players to miss honing some of the skills noted above. Playing politics gives you a way to buy time or redirect threats in a manner that isn't available in the 1v1 games of other constructed formats. The transition from Commander to 1v1 is a larger learning curve than the other way around.

The concept of a point system just...doesn't work, unless you want people to post their entire decklist? I mean, I guess you have to anyway to make sure no one is putting doubles in their decks (excluding basic lands and Relentless cards and the like).

There are things you can do to make your games faster. If you have a tutor and don't know what you want, don't play it. This also makes you better at Magic. Be aware of slow play; I play token decks a lot which can have slow play issues, (Tapping all those tokens can be a bit much.) but I more mean, if you do nothing for a minute, you really should just move on to the next phase or step.

wallisface on Does Experience in the Game …

I agree with what Icbrgr and Crow_Umbra said. People playing commander and other casual kitchen-table games usually learn at a much slower pace compared to those playing competitive events - after all, the stronger the competition the more pressure there is to adapt and learn, plus your much-more likely facing off against actually skilled opponents. Casual formats like edh are pretty bad for fostering bad habits (particularly card evaluation & mana curves imo). Multiplayer formats in general teach you more about politicking than playing the game.

If you want to get more skilled at playing the game, I think the best way is to regularly play a mid-to-high-powered cube. Mistakes and misplays become obvious really quickly, both in deck building and how you play turns.

clayperce on Elektra: Assassin (Massacre Girl Ultra-Budget)

seshiro_of_the_orochi -
Thanks much for the comments and suggestions. Some thoughts ...

  • Tarrian's Soulcleaver and Blade of the Bloodchief are great on other creatures (they basically turn anyone into a Venomcrawler). But they don't do anything for Massacre Girl at all.
  • Thinking about Fake Your Own Death: Yeah, like I say in the description, I've got "a few blink effects for Elektra, for when the party gets out of hand again". But I probably need to either add more or delete the package entirely. With my current 5x cards (Synod Sanctum, Voyager Staff, Erratic Portal, Conjurer's Closet, and Demonic Gifts), I only have a 54% chance of having one by Turn 7, and that's not as consistent as I'd like. But to justify more, I'd really need to swap a bunch of creatures out for ones with ETB effects (currently I only have 7 creatures worth blinking). Hmmm ...
  • You might not have noticed it in the deck description, but "I'm already bringing plenty of salt to the table with a repeatable board-wipe in the Command Zone; I don't want to bring much more. As an example, I'm avoiding Blood Artist effects." So thanks, but Bastion of Remembrance is right out.
  • Similarly, you might not have noticed that I said "I mostly play in an ultra-budget (USD $25) Bracket 2 pod. So ... any card above USD $3 has to be better for the deck than Skullclamp". Grave Betrayal is good, but it's no Skullclamp. And Revel in Riches is great, but ridiculously overpriced for this deck.

Thanks again; cheers!
