looking for a new commander...

Commander (EDH) forum

I need a new commander for an EDH project. I am 100% open to suggestions. The problem is that my play group banned all my decks. azmai lady of scrolls turned most games into me taking one long turn and winning through no interaction with anyone. So...boring. Momir Vig, Simic Visionary resulted in me taking too many turns and thus ending the game with a million elf tokens tapped and killing everyone in one shot. So, again, boring. I play more multiplayer than I do 1v1 so Rafiq of the Many isn't really shining for me anymore either. So here I am looking for suggestions for a new, fun commander.

Titania, Protector of Argoth seems cool, but outside of Zuran Orb I don't see much to do with her. Prime Speaker Zegana is one of my favorite cards, but again, I'll get trapped in my favorite GU infinite turns = infinite tokens things. Who do you suggest?

Ruric Thar, the Unbowed.

Play a whole bunch of cards that promote attacks (like Bedlam or something), some symmetric ramp (Heartbeat of Spring and such), and big, meaty dudes. The goal should be thirty-minute games, even with four people. Don't care about politics. Pick a person. Play Ruric Thar as soon as possible. Kill that person. Pick a new person.

I should add as a reminder to the above post, in regards to the "thirty-minute games" bit, that A. That should be a maximum time, and B. my group's games tend to last an hour or two, so 30 minutes is fast.

Either stop playing infinite combo decks or find a new play group.

Norin the Wary is a fun commander

Narset, Enlightened Master, Jhoira of the Ghitu and Progenitus. Unless you want people to like you, which in that case I have nothing for you.

Karador, Ghost Chieftain isn't degenerative but can still do some crazy stuff. Self mill cards like Nyx Weaver and Deadbridge Chant are fun. As are creatures that cycle like Krosan Tusker

I guess what I really need is help on how to build a commander deck that doesn't result in an infinite combo? Without a combo deck, do I just take the aggro approach? I'm just fuzzy on the logistics of of a non combo commander deck.

I thought about Narset, Enlightened Master, but I immediately went right to Enter the Infinite into Beacon of Tomorrows and decided against it. Jhoira of the Ghitu poses me the same temptation. I would never be happy playing one of them without that combo.

I think green might be the right color for me...with red or white. Blue is trouble for me. Any thoughts on Titania, Protector of Argoth?

Isamaru, Hound of Konda. No combos there lol. You'd probably end up making a tron deck which is best used in 1v1, but you seem to be very imaginative so idk.. you may come up with something interesting.

Gideon17: All those suggestions work except the Primeval Titan, for banned-ness reasons.

I think Karador, Ghost Chieftain seems like the guy for me. Maybe I'll still Isamaru, Hound of Konda in there to see what I can imagine for him, slemulv.

Karador will let me use my favorite creatures from my Momir Vig deck without making them too degenerate.

Try weird decks that take a long time to combo off. Something like a 5 colour Maze's End deck or a deck that uses Eye of the Storm to put piles of Briberys into play.

Another thing that might interest you is a Rebel tribal deck using Lin Sivvi, Defiant Hero and all the changelings.

There's always Omnath, Locus of Mana, Avacyn, Angel of Hope, or an odd one that my friend loves using in his mono bacl deck, Nirkana Revenant.

I've enjoyed Anax and Cymede immensly. It's a different kind of voltron deck. You get more mana efficient ways to pump them (Brute Force now gives your general +4/+4 and trample for the turn), but at the same time, the buffs only last for a turn. The way I've built my deck focuses on instants with cmc less than or equal to 4, for insane synergy with Sunforger. I've had the deck win fairly consistently by turn 6-8. I've had someone tell me that it won faster than their Kaalia of the Vast deck once.

This general is extremely designed for 1 v1 commander though, so definitely take that into consideration.

Karador, Ghost Chieftain can be a crap load of fun but be careful. The room for abuse is definitely there as demonstrated by my Karador deck here](http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/04-11-14-trash-and-treasure/). I don't link for attention purposes, only to show that if your group nerfs combos then you may wanna pull somenof the cards i use but avoid the more abusable ones.

stop playing infinite combos OR start playing competative

My group Plays very conpetitive. They just couldn't stop Azami, Lady of Scrolls or Momir Vig, Simic Visionary because I would drop Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir and combo off. I totally understand that it gets annoying for every single game to go the same way every time we play, so I decided to make something more interactive. In their defense when they said I can't play azami anymore all I did was add green and change the commander so there were 3 combos instead of 2 available.

I think playing without blue will solve the issue. They all have access to more cards than I do so they all have 5 or 6 commander decks rotating around at once. With me I only ran Azami, then Momir. Rafiq can't get there in multiplayer, so I am going to give Karador a go. I never played commander with black before so let's see how this goes and it looks like more fun to play with.

You could always try blue control with out adding the infinite combos. My play group really frowns on them and if its in the league i play in you get docked points. Empire Of Blue is pretty much just that you can easily build something similar and just destroy everybody with there own stuff. Or maybe try a deck that's completely off your normal play style as 5 color (not many of them around) or see if your play group will allow a Nephilim 4 color deck. Need to ask first since its not a legendary but tons of fun. On my profile i have a few off the wall commander decks and they are decent some better by far then others. Hope it was helpful!
