Trying to make cool tribal Commander decks other than the obvious ones!

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on Jan. 9, 2016, 1:38 a.m. by Darkleus31

Hello TappedOut community! I'm putting myself out there with this being my first forum discussion! Now that that's out of the way, let's get down to business.

As you can probably surmise from the threads title I'm trying to make tribal Commander decks! It's kind of my thing at the moment! So far I've created several Zombie and Vampire decks, a Sliver deck, obviously, several Elf/Druid decks and I think I've made at least one or two Wizard decks.

But here's the thing, I've only been playing Magic for a little over two years so I don't really know many of the tribal kind of creatures...

So my query for the community is: What are fun tribal commanders that I haven't made or are not what anyone would immediately think of!

If this threads description is too vague for any reason feel free to contact me for clarification.

I thank everyone in advance for their help in this! Give my decks some comments, suggestions, and votes at my page, Darkleus31!

Fungus/Saproling tribal is one if my favorites. Stuff like Sporesower Thallid to help make saprolings, and Utopia Mycon to use them. Thelon of Havenwood is a nice commander for this because of color identity rules. Just search Fungus on gatherer and you probably have enough for a deck.

Elementals with Horde of Notions makes for a fun deck.

Naya Beasts might be an off-beat choice, with either Marath, Will of the Wild, Uril, the Miststalker, or Gahiji, Honored One as the commander. Beast tribal doesn't offer a whole lot in the way of interesting mechanics though, so you would have to get creative with how your deck would capitalize on having a bunch of large creatures.

Derevi, Empyrial Tactician bird tribal might be interesting.

Darkleus31,
Love the thread!

Me and a friend keep threatening to do Bear tribal, with either Surrak Dragonclaw or Yeva, Nature's Herald at the helm.

I was seriously going to do Beast tribal with Gahiji, Honored One as my next build, but I got distracted by Hazezon Tamar. He generates Sand Warrior tokens, and though I ended up doing a light Warrior theme I didn't go all-in. I passed on Sand tribal though. Too bad Dune-Brood Nephilim isn't Legendary ... :-)

On the completely goofy side, there's a fair number of Chair tribal decks around the site too, with Oloro, Ageless Ascetic as Commander. And I'm fairly certain we'll see some Hat tribal decks pop up with SOI.

I'll second the Naya beasts with Gahiji, Honored One, it's super fun to play and fairly uncommon, when people see Gahiji, they expect a deck full of Propaganda type effects, so it's cool to surprise them with a beast tribal.

Spellshapers are fun to play with. If you're in 2+ colors you should have enough to choose from, but I'm uncertain about their viability haha.

A better one might be Rogues or Knights

Jeskai spellshapers with Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest or Ruhan of the Fomori (with Ruhan also Giants tribal could be fun)?

WU Birds with Kangee, Aerie Keeper, maybe Cleric tribal with the new Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim or Ninjas with Higure, the Still Wind, or Snakes with Kaseto, Orochi Archmage, Rebels with Lin Sivvi, Defiant Hero, Barbarian/Warriors/Berserkers with Lovisa Coldeyes, Rats with Marrow-Gnawer, Insects with Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest and Swarmyard, a new take on Illusions with Meloku the Clouded Mirror, Cats with Raksha Golden Cub, Scarecrows with Reaper King, Druids with Seton, Krosan Protector...

One that could be fun: monsters of the sea (Krakens, Octopuses, Leviathans...) with either Tromokratis or Wrexial, the Risen Deep

One for the lolz: Avatar tribal with Karona, False God

One of my personally favorite tribes is ...

Snake Snake Snake Snake Snake Snake

You can either go UG with Kaseto, Orochi Archmage or GB with Pharika, God of Affliction. The deck is super durdly and really fun to play!

I've only been playing Magic for a little over two years now and all these tribal decks I wouldn't have been able to come up with on my own. This is mainly because the cards I know are what I've used and what I've played against. These are all great ideas that I plan on using to build my own hopefully unique versions.

Thank you all for these suggestions!

If you think of anymore tribal commanders that might be fun to make then by all means post them on the thread!

And again take a look at my decks and give them some votes! I think most of them are pretty good!

Cheers to the TappedOut community,

One of my friends made a surprisingly mean Kithkin tribal deck.

I have an enchantment tribal deck which no one ever expects. WUBRG Enchantments

I just finished building a Cleric deck, and with Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim releasing soon, she's the perfect commander for it. Would you like to buy an indulgence?

Darkleus31 says... #13

I actually have made a Kithkin tribal deck already and your observations are correct in that they are surprisingly mean decks to go up against.

This is my Kithkin deck: Soldier On, Men! Soldier On!

Ayil, Eternal Pilgrim also looks like it's going to be a favorite for everyone who wants to build a new Cleric tribal deck.

I saw a cool shapeshifter tribal with Lazav, Dimir Mastermind as the commander. Changeling tribal is quite competitive if you feel like running it. Rosheen Meanderer does a pretty mean hydra tribal.

Darkleus31 says... #15

I've seen Lazav, Dimir Mastermind used as a normal commander before and he's really nasty! But I can say I haven't seen him used for a tribal deck yet.

I think I'll look into that one!

Thanks, Lanzo493!

Tsabo Tavoc Horror tribal is one I've never seen. :)

Or Karona, False God w/ all the Theros gods. God Squad seems like a fine name for it...

Horror tribal sounds pretty cool! But are there even enough of them to make a tribal horror deck?

January 9, 2016 7:52 p.m.

Dromar39 says... #18

I think there is around 50 horror creatures.

Darkleus31 and Ghosthunter39,
Turns out Gatherer lists 146 Horrors ... who knew? Of course I'm not sure how many of those are actually playable!

All,
For anyone who was not aware, EDHREC has an extremely cool tribal page

TheFoilAjani says... #20

You could cheat and play Xenograft.

January 10, 2016 1:01 a.m.

Darkleus31 says... #21

TheFoilAjani, how would you be cheating with Xenograft?

I'm not familiar with the card so I wouldn't know how to "cheat" with the card.

January 10, 2016 3:33 a.m.

Xenograft overrides the creature types of your creatures you control by adding whatever you choose with Xenograft to each of your creatures' subtypes, essentially "cheating" by playing tribal without really playing tribal.

Darkleus31 says... #23

Now that it has been explained to me with a more precise description; I can say that the suggestion is good but I'd rather build an authentic tribal deck instead of a fake one.

January 10, 2016 4:06 a.m.

TheFoilAjani says... #24

I mean, I've tried cat tribal. It's actually really strong if you build it right (play Naya cats).

January 10, 2016 9:33 a.m.

blub_me says... #25

I created a bird tribal 60 card way back, like onslaught block. Not sure how it would translate into an EDH deck.

My edh deck Ertai and Karn BFF although its not tribal.

January 10, 2016 10:28 a.m.

Darkleus31 says... #26

TheFoilAjani, cat tribal decks are actually pretty hardcore to go up against if they are built right!

blub_me, I've never seen a bird tribal deck personally but it does sound interesting!

In case anyone is interested; here is my latest tribal deck, Atlantis Discovered.

Darkleus31I'm going to be another vote for bird tribal. There are several ways you can go about building one, but Soulcatchers' Aerie is probably THE key card you would need to make a bird tribal deck work.

blub_me I had one as well, and my playgroup let me play it against 5 EDHs because they wanted me to get into EDH. I am currently working on converting the deck to an EDH after having had the deck for 10 or so years, possibly with Zur the Enchanter or Athreos, God of Passage as my commander.

Lanzo493-I am going make a budget giant tribal deck around Rosheen Meanderer.

Darkleus31-Maybe mono-Angel tribal around Linvala, the Preserver, Linvala, Keeper of Silence, or Avacyn, Angel of Hope.

January 12, 2016 6:51 p.m.

@ 1empyrean

Don't forget the foreboding Dovescape, which is also a key card for the little flap-flaps.
