Sideboard

Maybeboard

Hello, and thanks for checking this out!

This is my Guttersnipe Delver. The gameplan is that of most Delver of Secrets   decks: to stay ahead of the opponent with early creatures; keep them off balance with counterspells and removal; get maximum value out of our other early creatures (Young Pyromancer and Baral, Chief of Compliance) by playing instants and sorceries. The twist is that we can finish them off with the reach provided by Guttersnipe, instead of relying on burn or Bolt-Snap-Bolt.

For example, on 5 mana you can:

  1. Play Guttersnipe
  2. Counter the inevitable removal with a Spell Pierce or Dispel, triggering Guttersnipe
  3. Lightning Bolt face, triggering Guttersnipe

This is a pretty easily achieved line of play that gets us seven damage to face and protects our threat. Plus there are a ton of variations on this sequence because Guttersnipe triggers off of every instant and sorcery in the deck. Even if this line admittedly takes 1 more card and mana than bolt-snap-bolt does, if Guttersnipe stays on the board or if I cast more instants that turn this extra damage is repeatable.

Side note: I love Baral, Chief of Compliance and casting two-mana spells with its instant/sorcery discount! Applying the Lightning Strike-to-Lightning Bolt power increase to Remand and Negate feels so good, and makes it even easier to trigger my creatures!

Because I don't know that much about Delver as an archetype, I would really appreciate any tips about delver's strengths and weaknesses, and any suggestions about my mainboard and sideboard. Many of my suboptimal choices are due to budget concerns, especially with the mana base and lack of Snapcaster Mages, but I'm more than open to hearing what you have to say!

For the mainboard, I'm specifically wondering if and how I should be differently prioritizing burn, removal, threats, counters, lands, and card advantage when it comes to my card selection. I want to fit more cards like Bedlam Reveler into the mainboard that can cheaply pull double-duty as card advantage and also a threat, but it's often hard to make it work without adding more of a discard theme and making myself vulnerable to graveyard hate.

I often have trouble dealing with running out of steam before I can deal the last points of damage. It's quite possible that this is just because my budget is too low or the deck idea isn't that powerful, but there are definitely ways to optimize this that I haven't thought of yet.

Some things I want to try out are:

  • Manamorphose for a "free" instant (in terms of cards and mana) that generates mana w/ Baral out, useful for chaining a ton of spells together

  • Disrupting Shoal for a 0-mana counter that triggers creatures while also protecting them from removal

  • Mission Briefing as a budget Snapcaster Mage that is itself also an instant. If you Bolt-Briefing-Bolt with Guttersnipe out, it deals 12 damage, which is pretty damn good if you can make it happen.

I'm messing around with this list Guttersnipe Delver copy to develop these ideas.

Thanks a bunch for reading! +1 if you liked it!
