At FNM last night I went undefeated in matches after making a few changes: taking out a Giver of Runes for a Rancor in the main, and removing a Spellskite and Ceremonious Rejection from the side for a second copy of Rancor and a Nissa, Voice of Zendikar. I felt like I wanted another form of evasion other than Distortion Strike, so I added the Rancors. I almost put in an Ichorclaw Myr, but decided against it because I felt the list was too tight. I felt like having 3 Giver of Runes was enough. Onto the matches.
0-0 Dredge 2-0
First match of the night, I don't remember how I started the game, but I know my opponent fetched and shocked for a Stomping Ground and looted away a Darkblast. Gross. He dredged the Darkblast and played a basic Mountain. I was wary of Darkblast but he didn't have a black source. I have a Noble Hierarch and an Glistener Elf with a Rancor on it, and he fetches and shocks for another Stomping Grounds, attacks with his Narcomoeba and two Prized Amalgams. I untap, play three Might of Old Krosa, and he perishes.
Out: 2 Might of Old Krosa, Groundswell, and Dryad Arbor
In: Ravenous Trap, 2 Spell Pierces, Rancor, and Spellskite
I'm not 100% sure what I sided in and out are correct, but I believe that's the gist of it.
Game 2, I keep a hand with Inkmoth Nexus, 2 Mutagenic Growth, Might of Old Krosa, and some lands. I draw into a third Growth, Distortion strike and Might my Inkmoth, he Darkblasts, then I triple Mutagenic. GG
1-0 Urza ThopterSword 2-1
Match 2 I played against Zac Elsik on the new Urza combo deck. Game 1 I opened on Giver of Runes with gets named with a Pithing Needle immediately. Turn two I play Nexus then play one of my two Scale Ups on the Giver to get in for six, putting him to 11. We laugh, but the threat is real. He plays an Ensnaring Bridge to put an end to my fun. Next turn I play another land and beat in with Giver. He gets down to one land in hand and I untap and Inky does its thing.
Out: Some number of Scale Ups and Mights, possibly a Blossoming Defense.
In: Force of Vigor, Dissenter's Deliverance, Rancor, 2 Path to Exile
In game two I get in early with and get some poison counters on him, but he's able to find a bridge with Goblin Explorer and my Dissenter's Deliverance isn't good enough. He makes all the mana and casts his library.
Game 3 I play out an elf which gets immediately Pyrite Spellbombed away. He can't find a bridge and two Givers go the distance.
2-0 Humans 2-0
My opponent is on the draw, and my Elf with Distortion Strike beats his Thalia, Guardian of Thraben.
Game two he mulligans to three, and just can't compete with my seven.
3-0 Mono White Death & Taxes 2-0
Played against this gentleman on Monday, so I know what he's playing, just as he knows what I'm bringing. Game one we each keep a one-lander, but my Temple Garden off the top is better than his two Aether Vials. He puts a Thalia into play but I'm able to get there with Blighted Agent, I believe it was.
Out: 4 Mutagenic Growth, Might of Old Krosa
In: 2 Path to Exile, Nissa, Voice of Zendikar, Spellskite, Rancor
In game 2, he keeps a one-lander, but manages to get down a Leonin Arbiter, and starts strip mining my lands away. We arrive at a board state where I have three Noble Hierarchs and no other permanents. I draw and play Nissa, plus-one-ing her instead of buffing my Hierarchs. He vials in a Mirran Crusader EOT and kills Nissa, and paths my token. I draw and play Scale Up on the token, and beat in for 9. He has two Arbiters now, and I draw a Misty Rainforest. He draws and plays Tectonic Edge, and I draw a Nexus. He was already at seven poison, doesn't draw path, and concedes.
Closing thoughts:
The deck feels powerful. I did play against some non-terrible match-ups, but I believe that the Giver and Teferi builds are quite promising. I'm not sold on Teferi, Time Raveler in the main, but out of the side might not be enough for some metas. Rancor was everything I hoped it would be, and makes the creature decks running around easier to get through. I think three Givers is the correct amount. Four means they clog up draws late game, but three means we have a good shot at landing one early. Two Givers and an Ichorclaw Myr may be a fine choice, but I haven't yet tested it.
