Shaper Apprentice Discussion

filkinsmark on Merfolk Tribal for Rivals of Ixalan Standard

Hey, godemperorofdune, my pleasure~~ (and I like the Dune reference lol)

Shapers' Sanctuary, Nissa, Steward of Elements were pinch recommendations lol, I think Nissa will have an impact on the format, I'm not certain this is where she'll need to be.

For 1-drops, I think Mist-cloaked Herald is best. If we wanted another, which I say we may, Kumena's Speaker might be our best bet.

For 2-drops, River Sneak might be best, I agree. If we wanted a backup, maybe Shaper Apprentice to get flying in the mix? Never know when we'd need a flying blocker...Silvergill Adept is good though no doubt...

Wow, 3-drop is tough... Kopala, Warden of Waves gives us so much value in terms of protection... but Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca is big enough to survive most removal himself (but also, he isnt good by himself y'know?). And then, too, Deeproot Waters should be considered I think... Ugh haha

Seafloor Oracle is money. Cannot cut. It would be a crime. Herald of Secret Streams is good, I will not try to denounce that, but it feels 'win-more' when compared to Oracle, and we don't want to have more than 1 4-drop I feel, what about you?

Admiral's Order is money, also, with the aggro we're building, cannot be cut I think.

Blossoming Defense is totally defensible (see what I did there?), perhaps it should be joined by Heroic Intervention? I played Intervention in my Dino deck and it was money each time...?

UPDATE!i got the cards last week, gonna try with and without River Sneak. put them in de side deck for now if sneakyness is required. still trying to decide between Blossoming Defense and Dive Down. River Heralds' Boon is a stay but for beefy decks extra combat tricks are welcome. dive down's main adavantage is it only costs one blue sharing with Opt and Spell Pierce so you only need to keep open one blue instead of one blue and one green for blossoming defense. blossoming defense however has 2+/+2 instead of +0/+3 making it more aggresive and able to take out bigger creatures. still a little uncertain about Deeproot Waters. also, do i need flying defense? do Shaper Apprentice and One With the Wind deserve side deck spots? Shapers of Nature seem nice, but i'm hoping to win before late game arrives so i think it will slow the deck down too much. but i could try and see if it works :). got 2 Spell Pierce and 2 Opt maindecked now but doubting which one is better, need 4 of each in side deck anyways for spell heavy deck protection or extra searchpower but which one deserves the main deck spot O: ?also adjusted lands to match new mana base (almost exactly 50/50 now xD)

also, thanks for the advice

Drop 1 forest and 1 island and throw in 2 more of Shaper Apprentice. Your curve is super low, 22 lands will be plenty for most games. Standard has trouble dealing with flying so your vehicles are solid includes but you could probably drop them for Commencement of Festivities when aggro tries to alpha swing. If you choose to keep them Aether Hub is a solid include for the extra energy. Botanical Sanctum would be better than Woodland Stream if you can get them. Also Woodweaver's Puzzleknot for the sideboard against aggro, 6 life 6energy solid choice.

I see it as a problem, that there is no flying in this deck. Maybe you could consider to add Shaper Apprentice or Wind Strider.

Hi, I like the way you did your deck, but I miss more creatures to become even more aggro (24-25) and also some cards to give you more card advantage, since your mana curve is very low.

Instead of Unsummon, you could add Watertrap Weaver or Tempest Caller to increase your creature numbers and do almost the same effect. I would decrease by 2 the amount of Kumena's Speaker, since there is no evasion ability. Instead I would add 2 Shaper Apprentice.

As a very good "spell weaver" I would include 1 River's Rebuke . Also to work on the control with 4 Censor that helps you also to increase your card advantage with Cycling, then you can decrease the amount of Opt. The Merfolk Branchwalker which you already has also helps with card advantage.

Finally, if you're looking for even more synergy with counters, I would include in your sideboard Oath of Ajani, splashing 1 white, including some Aether of Hub in your lands, which allows you to have Planeswalkers like Nissa, Steward of Elements.

I guess is worth to remove Deeproot Champion because he gets +1/+1 only when you cast a noncreature spell.Metallic Mimic would be IMO the best choice because every merfolk that enters the battlefield after the Mimic gets the counter.

Shaper Apprentice is good because you have at least one creature that flies.

Mimic works well with all the creatures and, in the best case on turn 4 all creature you have are unblockable :)

P.S: Sorry for my bad english

Yeah, the Heroic Intervention over Dive Down Im on board with, but as for Metallic Mimic, is Deeproot Champion the best one to pull out? Assuming I run 4x mimic, would pulling out Shaper Apprentice be better?
