Happy Enough with this list to put it in Paper —July 20, 2023

After lots of tweaking and changes, it's time to take this deck out for battle

Nice deck. I do have some suggestions though.

Chaos Warp is Grixis' best answer to enchantments by far. Don't let problematic enchantments like Solemnity or Rest in Peace wreck your day.

Spark Double copies Marchesa for double Dethrone, the 2 copies protect one another, and this copy enters with a counter immediately protecting itself.

Midnight Reaper in addition to Grim Haruspex.

Ashnod's Altar enables a 2nd infinite combo in your deck. Ashnod's, Sage of Fables, and Flayer of the Hatebound = infinite damage and card draw.

Herald of Secret Streams ends games fast.

Sadistic Hypnotist and that discard ability seals up games tighter than a Dolphin's butthole.

Feel free to check out my list for ideas, it's one of the top rated Marchesa lists on this site. Upvotes on any of my decks are appreciated. Every Masochist Needs a Marchesa To Love Them

Hey all, any suggestions for new cards that would fit here? I haven't paid a ton of attention to the latest sets

I'm still advocating Spark Double. It can copy Marchesa to get double Dethrone or copy any etb/death trigger that you'd like to use on each player's turn thanks to that automatic +1+1 counter. The card honestly feels custom made for Marchesa.

Also, what is going on with your avg. cmc?!? It says it's 2.0 even but doing the math myself it's 2.9... I've never seen the avg. cmc bug out like that!

Oh, and Feed the Swarm is another amazing option for getting rid of those craptastic enchantments that shut off Marchesa's reanimation.

No idea if you've ran into this interaction before.

If someone plays Solemnity... immediately look up Flayer of the Hatebound. With no counter placed on Flayer from Undying, you can sac Flayer over and over to machine gun your opponents to death.

I ran into this the other day and it took a sec for it to click that my opponent had just handed me the win lol. I already had Flayer and Yahenni out, my opponent plays Solemnity and makes the comment "that should slow you down", and then I realized I had the win just sitting there!

Nice to see the deck getting updated still. Consider Seize the Spotlight. It's always draw 3 and create 3 treasures for 3 mana here.

Oh, and the 40k decks gave us Canoptek Tomb Sentinel as a versatile piece of removal that hits enchantments!

Hey Last_Laugh, thank you for your continued support!

I added Canoptek Tomb Sentinel... Do you have any other suggestions? If so, what would you cut?

Last_Laugh says... #12

_emphasized text_As far as cuts go, your list is pretty tight. Greater Gargadon and First Day of Class are the 2 that stand out to me. Guardian Beast also, but I feel like it's there for meta reasons.

Kardur, Doomscourge is disgusting.

Gisa, Glorious Resurrector if your meta is remotely creature heavy.

Yawgmoth, Thran Physician is amazing here.

Ender666666 says... #13

So, Gargadon is a Sacc outlet in the exile zone that can't be interacted with, so I like it in that regard... I like it.

Those other suggestions are quite good as well. SIGH Why is it so hard to cut down to 100 cards?

Myr Battlesphere, Kiki, and Time Sieze feels out of place (unless I'm missing a combo).

Ender666666 says... #15

Marchesa, the Black Rose + Myr Battlesphere + Time Sieve makes infinite turns. That's kinda fun...

Ender666666 says... #16

Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Spark Double makes infinite tapped tokens and infinite ETB and LTB effects dependent on a sac outlet.

Bloodtracker (for Yawgmoth), First Day of Class, and I'd still say Myr/Sieve. I'm not a fan of infinite turns myself but how are the cards by themselves outside of the combo? Time Sieve feels like a dead draw without Myr. Kethek is another possible cut, the timing feels like it leaves its random creature vulnerable.

Another fun new card is Thundering Raiju.

Ender666666 says... #18

Oooh Thundering Raiju is the shit!

June 30, 2023 3:41 p.m.

Ender666666 says... #19

Oh, and why not First Day of Class?

July 1, 2023 6:56 a.m.

Last_Laugh says... #20

First Day of Class is just the 1 time aspect that I don't like tbh. It's not a bad card, but it does seem weaker than the rest of the deck. I'd rather a repeatable effect to get a counter via Vigean Graftmage (highly underrated), sage, mimic, unspeakable, mikaeus, or at least have a reusable haste enabler like Ogre Battledriver that makes Flayer/Terror of the Peaks hit harder.

Ender666666 says... #21

Oh I think I had missed Terror of the Peaks I like it!

So one thing I'm noticing is you are getting a bit flooded at the 4 drop spot (18 cards). If you're still looking for cuts, I'd say look there.

That's been my biggest struggle with Marchesa lol. Keeping the # of amazing 4 drops for this deck in check is a nightmare since they compete with Marchesa at that cost. If you find you can't cut down at that slot, consider Fleshwrither to make it a toolbox of sorts.

Every Masochist Needs a Marchesa to Love Them is my deck if you feel like referencing it. There's a lot of comments to sift through for older ideas too (like Legion Loyalist, which was honestly pretty amazing here for a 1 drop).

Hiya! I played a Black Rose deck for 6 and half years, and here are some of my observations:

(1) If you want to run some more unusual creatures, Thalakos Deceiver is exceptional, as is Goblin Grenadiers.

(2) you can spike the power and create significant annoyance with Dauthi Voidwalker. Remember the void counters track between instances, so you can really can just smack with it until you need it, and then it remembers all the cards its exiled over its whole life span.

(3) In your land base, take out some of the slower lands for Threshold Cycle Cabal Pit, Cephalid Coliseum and Barbarian Ring. The neat trick is you wait til you've filled up your bin with stuff (before her Ladyship brings them back), and activate them then. Otherwise they are painlands which enter untapped and add coloured mana.

(4) The last cute trick is Trinket Mage. Now, if the Ozolith and the Skull Clamp weren't good enough reasons... Consider Myr Scrapling and Hope of Ghirapur, both of which are exceptional utility creatures of the deck. If you want to be extra spicy, you can even add some artifact lands so you use the mage to mana fix

July 4, 2023 10:14 a.m.

Hey Ender, been a while! I'm still working hard on my Marchesa deck if you'd like to steal some ideas. As for my suggestions:

Hostage Taker is huge as it can steal artifacts.

Imperial Recruiter Can tutor for most cards in my deck, your creature's powers seem a bit higher.

Iron Apprentice is incredible

Thought Sponge is a fantastic draw engine. I find myself drawing 5+ cards each cycle if opponents don't deal with it

Thran Vigil Adds a +1/+1 counter to every creature that re-enters, protecting them immediately and allowing you to sac them.

Uncivil Unrest Does the same as above but for all creatures that enter, also a wincon

Reins of Power Is a favourite of mine against token players. Sac all your creatures to steal an opponents, then you have the option to sac them for a ton of mana with an Altar or get +1/+1 counters on them and sac them as soon as Marchesa reenters the battlefield in your end step.

Aetherworks Marvel has played fairly well

Scroll of Fate Lets you cheat out lands, enchantments and artifacts as Marchesa only checks the card type when it's on the battlefield

Last One Standing is hilarious, same with Saw in Half

Living Death is an incredible board wipe, especially if you sac all your stuff beforehand

I have over 100 cards in my maybeboard that I haven't gotten around to sorting out, but here are some standouts I'm looking to include.

Imposter Mech seems like it could be incredible. Once you get a +1/+1 counter on Marchesa you don't really want to attack with her, so you can use her to crew the mech each turn

Urborg Scavengers Is repeatable grave hate with some bonuses

Kardur, Doomscourge Is dirty

Fell Stinger is a reliable source of draw, can sacrifice itsself in a pinch

Body Launderer seems incredible. Card selection and recursion

Anyway, that concludes my rant. Hope all is good with you!
