Kiyomaro, First to Stand

Legendary Creature — Spirit

Kiyomaro, First to Stand's power and toughness are each equal to the number of cards in your hand.

VampDemigod on Fox Offering+Commander tax?

Does commander tax in EDH count as part of the commander’s mana cost, or is it a separate cost? I know you can’t cast the commander without paying it, but you can use the commander’s abilities to cast it without paying tax.

This leads to my two questions: 1: does commander tax affect Patron of the Kitsune’s ability? For example, if I’ve cast Patron from the command zone twice already, and I activate Fox Offering, sacrificing Flourishing Fox, do I have to pay 4W or 8W?

Secondly, if I have a card on the battlefield that cares about the cmc of cards I cast, is commander tax part of that cmc? Let’s say Kiyomaro, First to Stand is my commander. If I have cast Kiyo once before from the Command Zone, is Kiyo’s CMC 7 or 5 while on the stack?

Nice! I made a similar(ish) deck that you can see here:

Illusions of Grandeur can be overpowered, along with Delaying Shield. If you're looking for some more modern cards, Akroan Horse, Hunted Dragon, Hunted Phantasm, and Kiyomaro, First to Stand could prove to be devastating! I also need help with my deck, but hope my suggestions help! Keep up the good work!

Icbrgr on The best cards not worth …

Righteous Authority is another card that comes to mind for me in terms of something that at a glance looks really great with lots of potential with so many Spellbook effects available...and all the ckeeky kamigawa cards out there like Jushi Apprentice/Kiyomaro, First to Stand but again mana investment makes it pretty tough to pull off for 5 mana to be just part of a combo piece.

@Sinist3r yeah id love to take a peek at another Skaab Ruinator brew!and yeah i agree about card disadvantage, life gain, and +1/+1 counter based cards to be difficult to navigate traps for a lot of players (I've been that guy more than once..).

@Xica thank you for bringing Nimble Obstructionist to my attention! i'll have to playtest that guy.... i would like to see you being right about some of these cards finding a place.

@sylvannos Hair-Strung Koto and Realms Uncharted seem pretty interesting... Hedron Crab with maybe some shennagans with Pili-Pala + Freed from the Real and Crucible of Worlds?

Ajani's Mantra is terrible. Run Sun Droplet in its place if you're going to run a card like that at all.

Bargain is also an atrocious card. With the small amount of card drawing and lack of tutors this deck has I don't think you can afford to just give an opponent a card. I strongly recommend removing it since giving an opponent card advantage is terrible, especially for such a measly amount of life. Hell, Angel's Mercy doesn't give an opponent a card, but I don't really think its worth running, either. Kiyomaro, First to Stand does this repeatedly if you have a source of card draw, but he's not exactly worth the slot either. Phyrexian Arena or something similar would make much better use of this slot- produce card advantage for yourself, not opponents. Mind's Eye isn't a terrible option, either, since your opponents have to draw at least 1 card per turn. Your mana base can't handle Necropotence, but at least Phyrexian Arena would give you some method of digging deeper into your library.

Hope this helps.
